High GPU use, low everything else

Featured Replies

Well, I've been using MSFS for about a week now and am having problems figuring something out.
First, I'm running 4k 32" monitor @ 30 hz, 60 locked in NCP.
Stock 172, settings medium. 3080ti w/11mb ram.

When looking at the task manager, it's bouncing between 90-100%, but GPU temp is only 40c and the power target in PrecisionX is only at 32%; this card is taking a nap. In P3D, if I was at 90-100% GPU usage, I'd be at 60-65c easy. Why the difference?

Thanks,
Mark

Because of the frame limit? Or do you have performance issues? If not, I would not waste any second thinking about actual GPU usage... Besides that, in MSFS you can still easily run into heavy CPU limited scenarios (e.g. big cities with photogrammetry or huge hubs with AI traffic). In such a CPU limited scenario, you will never see 90-100% GPU usage...

Greetings, Chris

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 2x32GB DDR5 6000MT/s RAM, MSI RTX 4090 Ventus 3X, Windows 11 Home, MSFS2024

I may be missing something, but if your monitor is set to 30 Hz, why have fps set to 60?

I'm still looking at this. Part of the problem is I'm thinking I'm still flying P3D, but I will never admit it..😁

My 4090 also shows 90-100% gpu usage as reported by GPU-Z, so I don't think that's unusual what you're seeing.  Even so, like with your card, my cards temps are not all that high even with no vsync/unlimited frames, topping out at about 60-65C in the sim.

My old eVGA 3080ti would top out at 80-85C in the sim.

3080ti's are known to run hot, yours at 40-45C is the coolest-running one I've ever heard of.  Maybe that was an idle temp for you?

60 fps in 4k with a 3080ti seems a bit optimistic to me.

This is what I ran in P3D.

In MSFS I set my monitor to 30hz from 60hz; it allows that.
I set vsync in MSFS to '100 percent of monitor resolution' which yields a solid 30fps for now.

In P3D, I ran 30hz vsync and locked 60fps in in the internal limiter vs unlimited which many folks did and still do. In P3D, this offered a very smooth flight and reduced overhead by a third on the first core which was clear in task manager. By locking 60fps vs unlimited in P3D it also stopped FFTF dropping from .33 to .1 assisting in texture loading. Steve over at Code Legend spoke a great deal about this and for me the setting was perfect; have run it for a long time without touching it. I believe Bob Scott was running this as well.

So, there you have it. I'm bringing P3D thinking over to MSFS which, I'll admit right now, may be wrong. This is my second week with MSFS. As I go along and read a lot more, the small problems I have right now will no longer be so.

If the GPU is snoozing it seems like the CPU may not be doing its part.  What's your CPU again?

Also try running in DX12 vs 11.  12 will use more GPU.

Settings medium...  try ultra.

Wait just to clarify....your thread title is "High GPU use, low everything else."  But you said in your first post the GPU isn't doing much.  Is the CPU not doing much?

Also, MSFS is totally different than P3D was especially with threads and usage of CPU and GPU.  I'd just dump any use of limiting fps initially.  Also basically use a stock profile in NCP.  I still turn on the basics such as  "Prefer Maximum Performance" and "Best Quality" but everything else is stock.

I would set everything to ultra, except use TAA with render to 100 and no higher than Terrain LOD of 150 for starters.  When I run in 2D (12700K / 32GB ddr5 / RTX 4080) at 1440p I run TLOD at 300 rural and 200 cities.  But everything else is on ultra.

I suspect you folks have hit the nail on the head - 30Hz with fps lock of 60 probably has the gpu rendering 60 fps but only refreshing at 30 fps/30Hz. That might explain the weird mismatch of high utilization with low temps. Do exactly as Ryan says above and go back to stock profile in NCP...do nothing else but that and see what happens. It would also be interesting to know how much VRAM is being used with your current settings. What CPU do you have?

Thanks for all this guys. I will reset defaults in NCP and just run vsync and I’ll take another look at this tomorrow and let you know first thing.

CPU is 12900K with HT on.

In P3D most people used 30 hertz / vsync on. It is of no use to run 2 new screens for 1 frame. This will only tax your GPU more. The same goes for MSFS. Only if your monitor can’t run 30 herz or it causes flickering than you can use 60 hertz.

In MSFS with a 40 series graphics card you can set your refresh rate to 60, set the refreshrate to 50% and use DX12 mode with Frame Generation enabled. Then you would end up with 60 fps. That is the way I do it….

My monitor is set to 30hz with vsync on in game.
Haven't been flying in MSFS very long but seems pretty smooth with no stutters.

Just ditch all those antiquated ideas and awkward setups to make the sim appear smooth like with the ESP-platform. None of it applies to MSFS. Just do what you'd normally do with any game on your PC and enjoy.

Just this morning I reset NCP to default, reset all graphics to medium and all seems fine.

Smooth at 30 vsynced, GPU temps at about 50c and GPU utilization bounces between 70 and 90%.

As you said, this ain't P3D. 😬
