Back in the "Oh my god, it's 100% going to be a subscription only sim because it's on Game Pass and we will have to pay for the streaming of satellite data, NO WAY would that be part of the base game" days?

Good old days with some "were" claiming they are having insider info that would be a subscription based LOL!

If they had just had the sense to call it MSFS V2, instead of saying it's a brand new sim, all my anguish would have been avoided.

Well, historically we had FS95 (in 1995, as luck would have it), then FS98 (curiously released in 1998), then FS2000 (in...wait for it...2000), then FS2002, then FS2004...

Common sense is also very useful to help avoid anguish

In hindsight MSFS V2 was always going to be a thing!

As someone pointed out earlier, FS2024 needs to work flawlessly within the current XBox hardware limits.

This is both good and bad, the good thing is that it likely won't change too much and FS2020 addons might not need that much work to function.
The bad thing is .. what changes to the game can we expect? I'm quite certain there won't be much change within visual fidelity.
The trailer does show some nice scenery and details, but all of those could be attained in in FS2020 as well.
What does that leave? The arcade like missions and a few new aircraft?
There are quite a lot of bugs and functions still to be fixed in the current FS2020, such as ATC, replay functionality and so on.
However I doubt these things will be sorted with FS2024.

95 released in 1996, 98 released in 1997. FS2000 released in 1999, 2002 in 2001, 2004 in 2003...

Pretty sure 2024 will be the first sim to release in their named year.

Who says they're arcade like? Have you played them?

Wait until we actually have real footage or actually playing them before jumping to conclusions.

I doubt it, not all those 3D trees, it would melt PCs and X-Boxes.

Well, it's model year...sorta like the 2018 Ford I bought in 2017.  😉

The issue for most is the "10 year supported commitment from the MS team"

The entire flight sim community experience no matter the sim was/is that as soon as a new version came out the previous was dropped near instant not only for the sim but for 3rd party. It's going to be difficult to "trust" in that commitment as sales and userbase drops because of FS24 and the commitment switches to the new. Now who's going to believe them when they come out and say FS24 will have a 10 year commitment.

Quote

all my anguish will be avoided if

now having said that at the very start of the trailer it says "Pursue your dream of a career in aviation" now if they combine that with some sort of Airline Manager like OnAir then my anguish will be avoided 🙂

They specifically said the platform would be supported for 10 years, not the sim. This is just a new version of the platform.

I'm saying they look arcade like.
Are they complicated, in depth missions requiring a lot of skill and devotion and function in a physically realistic manner?
Or will they be pop-up scores, on-screen tips, sound triggers, in-game credit scores, designed to be fun and addictive for a kid with an Xbox?
Have you played them?

When on a mission to save a life or save the planet (points will be awarded) one thing we can be sure of is that all the voice actors will have American accents. Except the baddies, which will be cockney. 🤪

Sigh… so much discontent

I got scared for a moment, thought I was back in the days when FSX support ended and it looked flight simming was dead…

But the discontent is over a new sim? I don’t get it.

I’m particularly happy with this announcement.

I find this cult like devotion, first in XP to  Meyer and now in MSFS with Asobo very odd. Criticism is necessary. How else are the developers of the products we have paid for able to understand their customers? Asobo need to be brought down to earth. Only by keeping ALL their customers happy can they survive.

Exactly WHAT "cult like devotion" are you referring to? Since when does recognition of outstanding achievement equate to "cultism"?

All you've been doing this entire thread is brag about your pessimist / glass-half-empty world outlook. And even since MS/Asobo have largely clarified that we're not all going to die from having to re-purchase our addons, you've still maintained your negativity.

Why, exactly, does Asobo "need to be brought down to earth"? Really: EXPLAIN IT.

The quality and value they've brought to Flight Sim completely outstrips nearly every aspect of every other flight sim. And in those cases where they're still behind, they've made undeniably substantial progress in catching up.

Would you prefer to go back to Prepar3D or X-Plane 11? Because that's EXACTLY where you'd be - if it weren't for the market disruption caused by MSFS.

And, hey, "buddy" - MSFS isn't even my preferred flight simulator. Chew on that for awhile...

p.s.: your "Only by keeping ALL their customers happy can they survive" is insanely simple minded.. Name ONE company that keeps "ALL" customers happy.

According to this not really. Only as long as it's generating revenue.

I think bobcat called it back in January.

Yes, the ten year thing has been debunked by Jorg and the Asobo team on the twitch sessions and other interviews, even though they said it initially.
They said they were just trying to demonstrate some commitment, but the sim will roll on for as long as people are using it and it is generating revenue - so it is open ended.

I thought they might relaunch MSFS every few years (i.e. we pay again for MSFS 2025 etc.), but it seems the marketplace is generating the income stream, and that will keep on growing.

The main threat to the sim's existence is if there is a change at the top of Microsoft.  If ever Jorg leaves, the sim might not be supported from the top.
Remember the ACES team being disbanded?  And even FSX was unloaded to Dovetail games at the end.
Ironically, as much as PC users might not like it, the sim being on the XBox creates a pretty good anchor for it in the Microsoft inventory.
