Hi everyone

I am thinking of upgrading my pc. It will intel to intel upgrade.

Can you please advise if the new build can boot up from my existing system drive, or would I need to do a fresh installation of windows and reinstall everything.

In the past...many years ago....I did a new build and I think the system did boot up from old hard drive.

I have Windows 10 now, is there any advantage in Windows 11 for msfs2020.

I have Windows 11 free update on my laptop. I haven't experienced any major advantages in general computing.

All advise will be welcomed.

I just build a new PC. i9-13900k/Gigabyte Z790/Noctua15 Cooler/32GB RAM/RTX 4080. It is the most I ever paid for a build, but it is an absolute beast.

I don't think you can boot up from an old drive (but I am no expert). It is best to start fresh anyway. I installed Windows 11 (easy from a USB) and reinstalled MSFS, very simple as it has all your settings stored in the cloud.

People are saying MSFS runs slightly better on Windows 11. But I have no comparison....

I am certain you will be happy with a beefy new build!

Most of what is said on the Internet may be the same thing they shovel on the regular basis at the local barn.

Do you have a budget at all?  If not basically the most you can throw at it will be amazing in 1440p or 4k.  Like Silicus says the 13900K route with a RTX 4090 would be a powerhouse (and yes I'd go Win11 for a little better cpu optimization).

Otherwise a lot of people are going AMD 7900x3d but still going RTX 4090.  At 4k I'm not sure which CPU is better but they are close.

If you do buy a RTX 40xx series video card you'll benefit from Frame Generation.  (Basically AI tech at the driver level to double your fps - does NOT work in VR though).  In a nutshell I run a 12700K system with 4080 and at 1440p I get triple digit fps in NYC.  With heavy addons like payware BOS, FSW C414, heavy weather and tons of AI from FSLTL (freeware) I'm seeing fps in the 70-80 range (same with PMDG 737 BBJ)... or with the new AAU Longitude and Navigraph charts I still see fps in the 60-70 range.  It's buttery smooth but mostly due to frame gen.  The difference between 30 fps and 60 (and 100+) is night and day imo.  I also spent almost 3500 USD on my system over the last 2 years.  Pricey but WELL worth it!

Otherwise if you are on a budget, I'd go 5800x3d or 13600K and a RTX 4070 Ti with 32GB ram.  I personally enjoy 1440p so pick a nice 32" monitor minimum to really see the beauty in MSFS.

Oh, also don't skimp on the power supply (go with 750w min if you get the 4070ti or 850-1000w if you do a 4090).  Also try for a M.2 nvme drive for faster load times.  I would highly recommend a minimum of 1TB for MSFS... and absolutely try for a 2TB M.2 if you plan on using Addons.  I've only got about 500GB left on my 2TB that is almost all MSFS.  I do also have XP12 installed with a little bit of ortho and a few addons.

Hi,

I'm also in the situation of having to improve my PC, especially the graphics and, perhaps, the processor, but seeing the announcement of the new FS24 I will wait to do the update till next year.

Greetings

Thank you so much for your advise.

I am retired pensioner...budget is very important.and as we all know flight simming has never been budget friendly..at least that's what my wife keeps reminding me....I have just been told at 65 I am more of a child than when I was 30... liar.

I am planning on buying components as cheap as possible. But I think it will a i9 13900k with a 32gb ddr5. With a standard azus or gigabyte motherboard.

My biggest concern is the software side.i cannot remember any passwords.... I hope my currant system will boot up....

Once again many thanks for advise. When built if I remember I will update you guys.

I noticed  you have Windows 11 and the HP Reverb G2...are you experiencing the stuttering mentioned in the Reverb G2 and Windows 11?

I've been thinking of getting the G2 when it goes on sale cheap enough, but I have Windows 11 and I am concerned about the stuttering mentioned with Windows 11 vs Windows 10.

I would like to upgrade my computer. What changes would you recommend for me to change in order to have a better experience with the sim?

What's the stuttering?  Is it the view kinda shifting once in a while or is this a fps issue?  I run high eye candy even in VR so there are some stutters a little.

Why buy Intel for MSFS? power hungry and runs extremely hot. Get a 7800X3D and enjoy an insanely power efficient chip that walks all over even the fastest Intel chip in MSFS benchmarks.

I should have used the word 'shaking' instead of stuttering...

I think it's best described here: HP Reverb G2, cockpit shaking since installing windows 11 - Bug Reports / Virtual Reality (VR) - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

It looks like many go back to Windows 10 to solve it.

Not sure, but you may have experienced it from your reply in this post here: Reverb G2 Shaky - Virtual Reality (VR) for Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) - The AVSIM Community

For those of you wanting to upgrade to a new PC and wanting to purchase the new MSFS2024 game, consider holding off if you can/want to see what the hardware requirements will be. Depending on what Asobo / MS do (i.e. online gaming), you may not need to spend as much money, but if things stay status quo, the new graphics requirements may increase. Just something to consider if you want to play the new MSFS2024 game.
