Engage!

 

Yep saw that on my recommends list, I went back to watch older episodes again to refresh my brain before I engage 

It felt very uneven and more like a mid-season episode than an opener.

The trailer that I have seen shows a part where a shuttle craft drops from the sky out of sight for several seconds (with the assumption that it has crashed), and then it appears moving fast over the trees and past the camera.

I hate stupid BS like that.

I extracted a fair amount of enjoyment from the first episode.

However, I had to program my mind beforehand to be ready for the cringeworthy dialogue, the stupid contemporary phrases that are out of place, and the special effects that look like something form a Marvel superhero movie instead of Star Trek.

Please oh please oh please oh please... bring back the guys that wrote DS9.

Tried but not interested at all. Different strokes guess.

Episode 2 was quite good. A bit cringe still, some of the dialogue, but much better,

Didn't like the way the lawyer womens arrogance was over done though. 

Episode 4: Utter garbage. If this is anything to go by, the writers need to cancel their strike and go back to work. They don't deserve more money for amateur garbage.

For streaming the past series of Star Trek, there's nothing like Paramount + which has all episodes of these:

Original (kirk, spock, bones, scotty, uhura, sulu),

Next Gen (picard, worf, riker, data, beverly crusher)

Deep Space 9 (sisco, dax, odo)

Voyager (janeway, chakotay, seven of nine)

Enterprise (set in the time before the original) (archer, t'pol, phlox)

Discovery (burnham, saru, vok)

Picard (picard, crusher, jurati, seven of nine)

Strange new worlds (set in time before original) (pike, spock, number one, noonien-singh, uhura)

Below Decks (a comedy star trek, the black female captain is vain and shallow. meanwhile, crew below the decks always save the day)

Below decks: becket mariner, brad boimler, d'vana tendi, rutherford

Officers: captain carol freemon, first officer ransom

I have just watched that episode. I would not class it as garbage, although it was not one of the best. What did you hate about it? To me, it felt a bit like one of the quirky episodes from the original series.

Can't remember now, dodgy dialogue, contemporary phrases, usual poo probably. I'll have to force myself to watch some of it again and let you know. So far, the only episode I deem reasonable is episode 2. 

Check out the latest episode. So awful I turned it off, couldn't watch anymore.

I do recall one or two examples of what you recall "dodgy contemporary phrases" ("no presh" comes to mind), and I agree that use of these should be avoided.

No, out  of place contemporary phrases AND generally dodgy dialogue. I find it so sad that the superb writing we had in TNG, DS9, Enterprise, is now a thing of the past in Trek. Some of the lines spoken by Garak in DS9 were iconic,  a far superior plot too.

I feel the directing is subpar too in Strange New Worlds. A decent director would get a much better performance from actors that I'm sure have it in them. 

Decent writers are still around. Plenty of other shows that are well written and directed.

I'm sure you can imagine my response when that assaulted my ears. Even my cat gave a  yowl of distress. 

Some of the characters should be given the boot. That doctor guy would be okay if I could understand what he was mumbling. That character with the partly shaven head should be shown the door, but I guess if she had decent dialogue to speak she might be okay.

I've watched season 1 and season 2 through episode 4.

All in all I like the series.  It reminds me of the original Star Trek as well as Next Generation.

What I find a bit unrealistic is the crew's casual familiarity, for example using first names when on duty and being somewhat flippant.  I get that the Enterprise is an exploration ship and not a warship, but it is still part of Starfleet, so the crew should be more disciplined with their language and interactions.  There is also the "cool" and "hip" factor which comes across in the younger crew members, but I guess that's just a generational thing.

The original series, NG, and Enterprise had the crew interaction about right.
