I remember how to hide under my desk. We were less than 3 miles from ground zero. I got in trouble; for pointing out the futility, of desk hiding.

What was ground zero, Sue?  We did the same thing in elementary school.  No ground zero near by!

Be careful what you wish for. People like to think it could never happen...until it does.

I grew up in Albuquerque, NM in the early 1960s, and we never once did the drills in school. Between nearby Los Alamos, and Sandia Base, the city was the heart and soul of the US nuclear weapons program. As “ground zero” as you could get!

I think the general assumption was that ABQ was probably targeted by multiple high-yield warheads in the event WWIII started, and there would be little point in practicing “duck and cover”.

My own father was a pilot for the Atomic Energy Commission, and shuttled scientists and workers between ABQ and LAM, as well as completed weapons between the AEC “Pantex” assembly plant in Amarillo and the Nevada Test Site north of Las Vegas where they would be tested. Many of my friends had one or more family members who worked in the “the industry” in one form or another.

I think the consensus opinion in the area was that the city would be absolute toast in the event of a nuclear war, and the attitude towards “preparedness” was rather “meh”.

For those who remember the 1960s it was a very stressful period, with the cold war getting distinctly hot at times. I have no enthusiasm for computer games based on nuclear war.

In 1962 I had just started towards my dream career in the Royal Air Force.  On 25 October that year, I completed the initial officer training course and was due to go on 2 weeks leave. It was also my birthday, but celebrations were completely overshadowed by the Cuba missile crisis, which was getting very tense. As we left the training unit the following day, a Friday, we heard that the USAF had bombed up all the B47s at nearby RAF Fairford, with nuclear weapons and crews were on standby.  We then heard that all the RAF V bombers were also bombed up and were on alert at their dispersal airfields around the UK. This was of course restricted information, so when I went home that weekend I could not say much, but I can say I was pretty scared over the next couple of days, until the situation was defused.

I think younger people do not understand how close we were to a total wipeout.

Hmmmmm.....

Texturing and modeling on the planes is nice, graphics simple but generally pleasant... Not a surprise its on the unity engine, it has that sort of low budget vibe.

They should probably do VR: it might draw more players, and my FPS never moved from the monitor max 144, so it seems a no-brainer.

Flight is basic arcady, not too hard to figure out without even looking up the control scheme; pretty standard.

Nice scenario builder and multiplayer options, cities are 80's retro graphics

Download is free early access: I suspect if the developers keep at it, this might have some legs.

We figured the harbor and downtown Baltimore, as ground zero. The harbor for sure.

I've never heard this song before. It kind of reminds me of Tom Lehrer's song, "So long Mom, I'm off to drop the bomb, so don't wait up for me." *see footnote

The best line in the song is the very last: "I'll see you when the war is over... an hour and a half from now."

So..... Checking the forum, it seems the developers have commited to VR.

Lets see if it happens.

This could be a competitor to Vtol VR, which is a bit more serious/detailed, but similar.
