Thoughts on Aerosoft CRJ series?

Recommended Posts

I know it has been out for awhile. But I just recently got it while awaiting other things in the world.. What is your thoughts on it?  Ive flown it a few times and its almost captain sim material for me.. Things dont work, glitchy, etc.  Maybe I just don't know what I'm doing, but I dont have any issuses with PMDG, Fenix, A2A.. Am I just expecting too much?  The "nav" frequently screws up.. It seems the power settings are not realistic.. Theres just a lot of issues.  I have had horrible experience in the past with other aerosoft aircraft.. This one is better, but not by much.

Junk. Nothing more nothing less and it was my last purchase from Aerosoft.

I wouldn’t say junk. I would say a solid mid level airplane

I dont think it’s on pmdg/maddog/fenix level. But it’s above captain sim

Yea I get that.  I guess I'm just spoiled.  I really wish we had a good regional carrier model though.

It's definitely not. Not even in the same universe.

Yeah it's basically like a step above Carenado.

I have it but don't fly it anymore.

It was ok for its time but my main issue was the display screens are tiny and very hard to see in VR.

Not the fault of the developer though as that's how they are.

It is a good creation. When you are looking to fly something simpler than say PMDG this is very good.

I've enjoyed it and never regretted spending the money. I have the 550/700.

At the time of release there were no Fenix, no PMDG, it was pretty much the only choice other than default for airliners.

Overall it was pretty OK for the time, not study level but not super basic like Carenado either, and it filled a gap.

Since then things have moved ahead at quite a pace and the CRJ has not really kept up.

The one to get is probably the 550/700 as most real world CRJ are the smaller ones.  The 900 series came afoul of the crazy US airline scope clause which limits regional jets to 76 seats.

I think I asked something similar before.  I recall this CRJ product was the better selection between the CRJ and the ERJ offering.

Yeah that's Aerosoft (or Hans Hartmann...?) in a nutshell. The ATR is just the same, even worse.
The CRJ is visually solidly modelled and performance-wise I think pretty realistic, but you can't do a single procedural flight without noticing something that does not work correctly and having to work around. E.g. on the FBW, which has much less features / functions for now, what is simulated does work almost perfectly. I think that's less immersion-killing, you just know what works and what isn't even modelled, while on the Aerosoft planes the systems themselves are all modelled but also guaranteed to have many glitches.

EDIT: And for a personal review - I never feel like I *want* to fly the CRJ or ATR. I do fly them every once in a while for the sake of variety, but I never look forward to it, unlike the Fenix, PMDG, Maddog, WT 787 etc.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t really have any major issues with it. The one thing that bothers me with it is that the TCAS is off-scale. If the ND is set at 20 for instance, the traffic range is set at 40(when it should be 20 just like the ND scale), meaning what looks like 5 miles away on the ND is actually 10 miles away. Personally I haven’t experienced the navigational issues that other people have reported, but then again I’ve been keeping each flight pretty basic.

It's like 85% fine most of the time, but the things that are broken are pretty badly broken. I think some of the frustration that people have is that this is a relatively "manual" plane in real life. No auto-throttle and advisory VNAV that must be managed and flown manually by the pilot. In the real plane, we are limited to LNAV only RNAV approaches. Stick to ILS approaches and things go can pretty well in the sim. I have yet to successfully complete an RNAV approach using my company's SOPs. The FMS is buggy and is missing some pretty basic capability like the ability to create along track offset waypoints. The autopilot has some truly head-scratching behaviors that will completely screw up even a properly programmed departure, arrival, or approach. Fingers crossed that the rumored upcoming update addresses some of these things...but looking at the official forums they are giving no hint at what is being worked on so I'm not optimistic.

When I get the urge to fly something like the CRJ, I usually end up flying the Longitude, which I think is pretty good (but obviously not at the PDMG/Fenix level).

Call me petty but the whole key mapping issue with the CRJ just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Why in the F can't we have simple key mapping for lights in the CRJ like every other 3rd party addon plane?
