Can't Launch the Sim

Oh when I say black screen, I mean it is the all black screen that appears after the  title card but before the "Checking for Updates."  So it's supposed to be there, except usually it goes by pretty quick.  Today the program is hitting that and just sits there.  It *is* the first screen where the Sim launches into full-screen mode.

I don't launch in full screen mode and have no experience. You could try launching in windowed mode (by changing some text with notepad near the top line of this configuration file).

For the last day or two, I have been unable to run MSFS.  It just hangs at one of the opening screens.  For example, I have it running right now in another window, and it was stopping at the black screen.  But this time is sitting at "Checking for Updates," and it has been like that for a while.

Am I alone, or are others having trouble too?

Today I also was unable to start MSFS which has never happened before. The running circles displays a few seconds then nothing more happens. I never get to any startup screens

Very well could be server end issue/s.

Are others still experiencing this?  I have tried and haven't been able to run the sim in several days now.

I don't have that. but was able to find a UserCfg.opt under local.  It already has the settings you mention here.  I tried changing the windowed setting to 0 but still have the same result.

For me an update of the Xbox app was needed i.e download the new app and install it

After one and a half days of trying I finally decided only way was to redownload, somehow I ended up on a xbox screen that asked if I wanted to play MSFS2020 answered yes and everything worked as normal.  From then on life continued as normal, no files missing, exe file back from 0 bytes.

Not sure this  is a solution, but I seem to remember users that ran into this issue, having to sign out of the XBoX app and MS Store app and then signing back in. Make sure you know your passwords first. Might be worth a try.

Mine is not launching. Neither does xbox.  I even uninstalled xbox and reinstalled it. No joy 😞

Yep. I think there is a serious problem going on at Asobo / Microsoft.

uh sorry but no, just  a few unlucky ones got it, not widespread.

Well, you have to keep in mind that for every person who is willing to come here and complain, there are lots of others who don't bother.  And when they're trying to build attention for the release of the 2024 version, this is not a good look.

Okay, I'm enormously frustrated at this point, as far as MSFS is concerned.  I haven't been able to run it at all for the better part of a week.  It's a little much to claim there are problems with the servers after this amount of time.  I've tried suggestions here as possible.  What do I have to do, reinstall from scratch?  I'd rather not, but okay, if that's the only choice.

I know Monday is a holiday, so they won't even be looking at anything.

Sorry for your frustration Andy. But if it was widespread, there would be many more posts. I am loading and flying every day with no issues.

I am on Steam, Windows11 (if that helps).

I had the same black screen two days ago but that was after a crashing application. The only way for me was to restore a backup of my system (that was the easiest way for me). I guess there was something wrong with cache files.

If you don't have a backup I would reinstall flightsimulator after making a copy of your community folder first.

Edit: after looking a little bit further: there is also an option to repair the installation in Settings>Apps>Installed Apps. You could try that
