TFDi MD-11 released--includes P3D 4-5-6 versions

Recommended Posts

The latest update (v.1.0.23) appears to be very much focused on resolving/improving sound effects and only 1 of the enhancements/fixes applies to P3D, so I am not sure whether its worth installing this update if you have P3D. It appears not to be a general update/fix package this time round which is a bit disappointing.

For those sitting on the fence about the MD-11 in P3D, it is certainly flyable, but you will need to make some compromises in P3D settings in order to keep the VRAM below 8Gb if you have an 8Gb graphics card as it will easily consume that while flying.
See my earlier post about a mod to the MD-11s texture settings.

FWIW, I recently upgraded to a 12Gb graphics card and have not experienced any VRAM issues since then and have flown about 8 flights so far with flights of up to 3 hours. Frame rates are fine. I am locked at 35FPS and there's no stuttering . Its pretty fluid.

From my own experience I have reported a number of bugs to TFDi:

  • The EFB only has 50% of the advertised functionality including no Simbrief integration meaning routes and waypoints need to be entered manually via the FMS (actually its not so bad on a 3 hr leg but transatlantic or transpacific flights might be a pain).
  • The EFB weight /payload entry is buggy in the EFB. Setting up a payload of more than 76tons is not able to be entered. To workaround this, I use the ZFW entry in the EFB rather than setting direct payload.
  • The external model does not show the Bulk card door in operation even though its displayed in the EFB as a operable door.
  • The fuel consumption seems "off". I typically land with a lot more FOB than I should (approx 11tons)
  • There does not seem to be any progressive refuelling option available built in to the MD-11. I tried to use GSX' manual refuelling but this does not work properly as it only takes 2-3 secs to load 15 tones of fuel.
  • I have some sort of mouse conflict between Chaseplane's menu and the autopilot when flying. The CP menu only appears to work on the ground . Once the AP is enabled, any right-click to pull up the CP menu will result in tripping the AP off. Instead I use the Windows task bar to bring the CP menu into view and then switch between views. Again only problematic when in normal flight and AP is on.

That being said, I find the take-offs are quite easy to fly, navigation is straightforward albeit the FMC is different to the Boeings and the Buses. ILS and RNAV approaches work quite well.  Landing is a bit tricky as the plane likes to hit the ground harder (~2G) due to its higher approach speeds at F35. I like flying it though and so far apart from the VRAM issue I experienced early on, its pretty stable.

I only wish TFDI would focus a bit more attention on fixing stuff for the P3D version which is lagging behind the MSFS version in terms of capabilities.

TFDI's support/ticket service seems to be quite efficient and adept of being customer focused, but once the troubleshooting/verification is done and the issue is passed to the devs, then its taking an age for those updates to materialise in the aircraft (especially for P3D).

Cheers,
Mark

I thought there were no 2D pop-ups in the P3D MD-11.
