Hello all,

As some of you may know, I recently upgraded my computer to include CPU  AMD 7800x3d, RAM 32gb x 6000, GPU AMD RX 7900xtx, and a new 2TB NVMe m.2 SSD.

To make a long story short, the mother board failed and took out my CPU as well. I replaced these and have now spent many, many, many hours trying to make a flight with VR..

After getting numerous, consistant messages telling me that PC was disconected (eventually fixed) the message chat moved to "please verify PC is set up for mixed reality" and downloading everything Microsoft mixed reality related to no avail,

I eventually learned that my GPU is not compatible with Oculus Quest 2 because (alledgedly) the Meta software is incapable of decoding the AMD software. Given that the only application for the upgrade was for Flight Sim and VR.I seek some alternative.

Having spent somewhat over AUD4000.00 on this upgrade, AUD2000.00 just for the GPU, I really have to admit that I am quite disgusted with Meta for failing to address this apparently known issue since the release of this GPU in 2022. As a Pensioner, this was a very considered, costly and futile purchase due to my ignorance of the software problem.

Obviously I do not have the funds to invest either in a new VR headset or a new GPU I am wondering if anyone in the realm of FlightSimming and or VR have a work around for this problem?

Is it possible to utilize the GPU without mixed reality software.

Any information would be appreciated.

Regards

Tony

Hello all again, Well, at long last I can report total success. I have just completed my first post upgrade flight and I am thrilled to say the least. I have no idea what the frame rates are

Quest 2 definitely works with amd gpus, Meta would be crazy to ignore 25% of the market...and they're not. Also you don't need any mixed reality for quest, just the oculus app. Microsoft is disco

Anyway the Quest 2 will work with AMD gpu in MSFS. I saw a video, but it was the G2 VR headset. But the gpu was same as yours.

Have you considered using the quest wirelessly

Fielder,

The problem, I believe, lies with the Meta Oculus drivers which do not decode the encoded "whatever" in AMDs GPUs. This does not apply to any other Headsets as far as I am aware.

It boils down to what is basically a poor choice in GPU or Headset.. Given that I already had the Meta Quest 2 (paired with GTX1080ti and upgraded to AMD GPU it subsequently appears to be a poor choice in GPU.

So, if anyone with existing Oculus headsets, DO NOT even consider buying AMD, despite them being a very capable GPU.

In retrospect, I would have preferred to pretend that the Meta product was an inefficient anchor for a very large ship and just as useful where it concerns AMD.

On those grounds alone, I would not recommend Meta to anybody who wants to use it with MSFS (and, I assume, any other programme) and I certainly will not consider purchasing another one.

I liken it to buying a car and then finding out that you can only put Goodyear tyres on it.

In summary, it is ONLY the Meta Quest drivers which are the problem and I cannot see, for the life of me, Meta going out of its way to fix the problem for its customers. The 7900xtx is now two years old and Meta have not yet addressed the problem despite being very much aware of the problem.

Thanks for your input though mate. Much appreciated.

Mate,

How would I do this??? I would assume that you would have to use the usb cable just for charging (particularly for long flights) so you could not plug it into the computer.

Is it possible for you to set out a procedure for using the Quest wirelessly for me please.

Thank you for the suggestion ... it was not something I considered because I automatically thought I would have the same problems.

Tony

When I had my Quest 2, I asked a question in a form on the Oculus website, and a tech guy got back to me and solved my problem (I think it took a whole day to get an  answer).

airlink or virtual desktop for quest 2 wireless for pc simulations does work. the link cable is a 3rd option.

Thanks again for your rapid response mate,

I have already submitted my problem to Meta but there are quite a few of exactly the same sort of query (none of which were resolved) and the general response from Meta support was that they would look into the problem (which is now two years old approximately) and for those affected to keep checking the updates. Yeah   right.

I am not holding my breath.

Given that I have only used VR in MSFS and only used link, I am now looking into the wireless/desktop route but it is a little confusing at this stage for me.

Time now to try and de-stress with a little company from Al Cohol and some loud music LOL

There are lots of videos on YouTube for setting up quests, I'd suggest a search.

Quest is picky on usb connection especially voltage ,one reason that wireless works better in many cases. Full charge lasts a couple of hours, or you can connect to a charger whilst flying.

Hey Tony

I haven't used the quest for a while but I think I used virtual desktop software(from steam).

You'll need a reasonable broadband connection

Jay

Strictly you need a cabled Ethernet connection from pc to router and good wireless, eg ac6, from pc to vr headset.

...

If you have a solid wifi connection at home, I would go down the wireless streaming method using virtual desktop. It seems to be a much more consistent experience for the majority of people I speak with, not all, but certainly most. It's probably the closet thing to plug and play for VR wirelessly.

https://www.vrdesktop.net

You need to buy the VD client for your Quest 2 in the store which I think is around £15 but I can give you a referral link for 25% discount.
