My little pond is losing water from the heat faster than it is refilled by the infrequent rain. Of course, it is close to Memorial Day weekend, so rain is forecast... 😿

Every house here has air conditioning. If the electrical power goes out for a few days, the newspaper will report a death toll. Almost half of California is located in that long and wide central valley. For August the average daily high is 98 degrees in the southern part of that valley. And 93 in the north. Which means on one half those days it will be hotter than average. But it's dry. Very dry.

It's green because of irrigation from a series of many rivers running from the Sierra mountains to the Pacific Ocean, they run across the Big Valley, East to West. And canals coming off the rivers irrigate millions of acres of crops. Orchards. Vines (the largest wine grape fields in the world). The most productive agricultural area in America. But it is a green desert. Most of the year about 15% humidity. Nothing rusts for lack of oiling.

It’s the last day of meteorological summer in the northern hemisphere today. My weather station has recorded some very interesting stats for the last three months. More to follow tomorrow. 😉

Meteorological Summer 2024 ended yesterday. Here are the main stats from my station in Cheadle Hulme together with some info which may cause you to raise your eyebrows.

The warmest day was 31 July with a maximum of 29.2C. Warm periods were short but included 23-26 June; 17-20 July; 28 July - 2 Aug and 11-12 Aug.

The coolest night was 13 June with a minimum of 5.7C.

The wettest day was 9 July when 0.72" (18mm) was recorded. Other wet days were 9 June (0.52"); 11 July (0.56"); 16 July (0.68") 15 Aug (0.39"). Rain fell on 44 days out of a possible 92.

The highest gust was 35mph on 23 August - Storm Lilian.

Sunshine amounts were below average in June and July but August was just above average.

The average temperature (day and night) was 15.5C - the lowest since 2012 (15.4C). Only two summers have been cooler - 2011 and 2012. The average temp deviation was just +0.1C for June; -0.2C for July and +0.3C for August. I have never known summer temperatures to be so close to the average.

The temperature failed to reach 30C for the first time since 2014.

Rainfall of 7.05" was recorded - 90.9% of that expected. June had 1.8" (68%); July 3.19" (136%) and August 2.06" (74%). It was under half of that which fell in summer 2023 (14.7").

With all the warnings of global temperatures rising these buck that trend. The very wet spell that started late June 2023 ended mid-July 2024 since when only 2.27" has fallen in 46 days.

So to sum up, the coolest summer in 12 years with no sustained hot spells and below average rainfall. Sunshine was just below average.

Very local and short term. So not related to average long term global temp, so not raising an eyebrow in that respect. I recall that the UK was predicted to get a cooler than average summer this year.

 

It's got me wondering about Guernsey's summer. Seemed like a decent one to me. Jersey is usually warmer in the summer and Guernsey warmer in winter.

We're seeing the same thing here in the USA.  Of course there will be the occasional temp which hits a record in a particular location, especially places out West, but overall the average temps have moderated over most of the country over the past 10 years.

We had a very cold winter in Nashville, TN this year where the low hit -17C and we had half a foot of snow for over a week in January.  There was about a 15-year period from the mid-90s until around 2010 where we got very little snow and relatively mild winters, whereas back in the 70s and 80s we went snow sledding every winter.

Things are definitely getting back to normal.

I can only record the conditions in my garden but I think you’ll find the same indifferent summer for the whole UK with obvious differences in rainfall. Check here in a few days for the UK stats.

That’s not something I’ve noticed in the 15 years I’ve had my station. Highest ever temp was two years ago. Coldest was nearly 15 years ago.

It’s been years since we had significant snow cover. Just 9 air frosts in January, 3 in February. And I’m 53.5°N! 😳

The weather we get is so dependent on the position of the jet stream. If it stays over us or to the south we’re on the cold side. And winds from the east bring completely different weather to when it’s from the west. 85/15 from the west & south.

It doesn't work like that, Dave. 

Weather in Cheadle Hulme where Ray's station is, or the whole UK, is defined as  local and of course one summer is short term. Short term local variability is to be expected. Short term global variability is to be expected, too. This is why climate change, induced by global warming, is traditionally looked at over 30 years or greater in order to avoid natural short term variability. Climate change is a long term average global trend. Not a short term local change in temperature. You will find many such pauses or slowdowns in the temperature record, along with robust evidence for a long term warming trend. 

While the so called warming Hiatus debate did generate useful research on short term temperature variability, it's very clear that the slowdown in the temperature rise was a small variation on a relentlessly upward trend in global average temperature. 

Since 2015, global average temp has continued to rise.

It’s important not to get into a debate about that as it’s one of the subjects likely to result in the topic being locked.

My main area of interest this year is rainfall and how much more falls between now and the end of the year.
