Custom PC Build

Featured Replies

With MSFS 2024 around the corner, I have started to look around for suitable replacement PC. My current PC is around 8 years old which I bought as factory build, But this time around I am going to custom build my PC. What you people think about below?

Looking at various custom PC build websites so far I have come up with the following options (This is subject to change of course as I am looking at more options to tweak):

- Intel Core i9 14900K

- GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16GB

- ASUS TUF Gaming B760-PLUS WIFI Motherboard

- 64GB Kingston FURY Beast DDR5 5600 MHz RAM

- 2x M.2-2280 storage drives of 1TB and 4TB each

- Windows 11 Home version

With regards to CPU - the initial option was for Intel Core i7 14700K But then I changed to i9, What do you people think should I leave it with i7 or go with i9? Of course i7 is slightly cheaper.

i9 is a remarkable chip, but be really careful about the setup of the BIOS on the ASUS board.  I and others have had some major issues with the ASUS (and some other boards) default BIOS over-throttling the i9 chip and burning them out (talk about multiple MSFS crashes!)  I was able to replace the processor under warranty.

Using a BIOS update with more appropriate settings the new chip has been running well.

Replaced the i9 with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. The extra 3D cache will be much more beneficial than what the i9 can offer. Plus it's TDP and power requirements is a lot lower.

I personally don't think the 64GB of RAM is warranted, the spec sheet published by Asobo desperatly need refining as they don't make a lot of sense.

Which brand are you buying the M.2 drives from? If it's Samsung, the premium of their drives isn't worth it unless you plan to do video work. Something like a Crucial P3 or even P3 would suffice.

Honestly until Asus decides to fix their house, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a component's who's company has dubious or even non-existent customer support. Gigabyte and Asrock haven't let me down for both Intel and AMD, if you need brand ideas.

Ryzen 7800X3D.
The extra CPU memory cache on the X3D chips is what makes the difference in flight simming.

Forget Intel at the moment.

It depends basicaly on the price difference. But I've just given a quick look at Newegg. Looks like the 7950X3D is a better deal.

EDIT: the price difference I saw was just $10.

Lossless Scaling for all my sims. What a godsend...

Mobile rig: ASUS Zenbook UM425QA (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H APU @3.2 GHz and boost disabled, 1 TB M.2 SSD, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 Pro). Running FS9 there .

VKB Gladiator NXT Premium Left + GNX THQ as primary controllers. Xbox Series X|S wireless controller as standby/mobile.

If you are going to spend that type of money, try to wait for the NVidia 5000 series release. It will probably release in Q1 of next year. For a comparable price to the NVidia 4080, you can probably get an NVidia 5080.

Unless OP plans on doing producitivty tasks (programming, video/art editing, 3D modelling etc) as-well, it's just wasted money as it performs the same as the 7800X3D in gaming situations

Because of the architecture of the chips. With the 7800X3D, all eight cores have access to the added cache. But on the 7950X3D, only half of the 16 cores have access to the cache. So you would end up having to spend some time setting up core affinity for MSFS in order to constrain the sim to the cores that have access to the onboard cache.

Given the added expense, the cheaper 7800X3D is the better option in my opinion.

Hi Randall, i too have an i9 13900ks. The only thing you must change in your bios setting is the power limit settings:

Power limit:

Tweaker tab

Advanced CPU settings dubbelklik

Turbo Power Limits from auto to enabled

Change Package limit 1 TDP from auto to 260 (type 260)

Change Package limit 2 watts from auto to 260 (type 260)

Auto is unlimited power that is 4096 watts.............

This changes the power from 4096 watts (unlimited) to 260 watts. The rest is default.

My cpu temp never goes over 85 degrees celsius with full load (280watts)

Kind regards,

Bouwe

It takes 5 minutes to setup the CPU to use the 8 cache cores and you have another 8 for everything else. The 7950X3D is a great CPU.

@CAP1234 That motherboard you specified uses a B760 chipset, which does not allow you to overclock or otherwise manage much of your hardware configuration.

Spending the money on an unlocked 14900K CPU and then dropping it onto that board is a pretty big waste of potential capability--you really should consider a board with the Z790 chipset.

Yeah thanks - I am still evaluating between i7 and i9, but of course i9 is newer generation of processor. Ideally I am looking for something which can get me going for next 5 years or so.
