MSFS 2024 too whitish?

Featured Replies

These past few days I've been able to see some comparison videos between the 2020 and 2024 versions. It seems to me that the new one appears with a much lighter color, whitish or very light gray.

In MSFS 2020, the landscape appears much darker when it is cloudy or in the shadow (from a building, a mountain, for example), but in 2024 the mountains aspect are quite different in colour. Compare the Grand Canyon or the Gran Capitan in Yosemite.

If memory serves me right, the images of the Grand Canyon appear much more brown in any National Geographic documentary, for example.

Has anyone noticed this?

Regards

Sorry, I wanted to say MSFS 2024 too whitish?

I don't think so. From the little I played with it, I thought it looked more realistic and less "yellowish" than 2020.

Just going to run a Chromebook and not upgrade to a Windows computer. Too many problems with the new Sims! 😱

Yeah I noticed this as well, but after a little while flying it seemed "normal". Might just be a thing to get used to, plus time of day and sun setting etc. Or maybe they will tweak it a bit before launch.

I think I would agree with you on it being whiter.

You have seen comparisons between MSFS2020 and MS2024 Tech Alpha.  We will have to wait until 19th November to compare it to the release version.

You can easily turn down the brightness with 'v' key and turn it up with the 'f' key on the keyboard! I was part of the alpha test and I did it numerous times (I am not 100% sure about the key combination, but it was only two simple keys to change brightness).

This video showcases exactly what the whitish difference is truly like, the first side by side shows a massive difference and not for the better IMO (the sky looks better but the landscape and mountains are eeww, unless of course MSFS2020 was wrong in the first place...!)

As for ground textures that just all depends on the imagery...  the white balance of a camera is what determines how blue or red or yellow in hue the image will turn out.

MSFS2020 currently is far too yellow, that means the hues of the grass/trees are way too green, the skies generally are too yellow.  It's what is called a warm color temperature.  Asobo basically admitted they used the incorrect settings to determine atmosphere.  This has been corrected in 2024.  People are used to 2020 atmospheric conditions and think 2024 doesn't look right.  To me it looks far more realistic... aside from the weird bloom/fuzziness they apply at night.  Hopefully we can get rid of that.

Edit: forgot to add my pics

I think the GCN area is pretty close.  I looked on google, and once you filter out the results near sunset, or late afternoon light (which cast a yellow/golden hue and turn browns much darker), you'll find it to be pretty dang close!  Personally, sure, I think the grand canyon photogrammetry could use a bit more contrast, but overall I like it.

Thank you, I didn’t know that!

Thank you all for your answers. In any case if I don’t like the colour tone I think I can retouch it with Nvidia App (but it does not work very well with msfs 2020 right now).

Hard to say. I have seen a few screenshots and videos where I'm inclined to agree but I need to see it in action, across many seasons and time of day, to really make a final judgement. That said, 2020 was really poorly calibrated in my opinion. You could do wonders just turning down the red levels a lot and adjusting the greens, then bump up the brightness a bit and it would look so much more realistic. The red levels alone made a huge difference.

To me it had to much Gamma going on making it look washed out. The ground textures atleast those for the western US look better in FS2024
