I'm still very curious on how "old" MSFS airports will work with 2024... I have a bunch of them, can i just use them, will they need updates?

This sort of questions.

They should work, that is what Microsoft promised as can still be read on their announcement page.

But... there could be issues caused by the underlying mesh being different or the transition to the default terrain can be horrible. Since addons don't have seasons they might not fit the season of the surrounding area.

Some of these problems were also apparent after releases of a new WU.

I guess that's were the "compatible" category could come in: just making sure that the airport matches the underlying mesh etc.

it’s porting the 2020 versions that’s confusing me

We have decided that most of our library will be updated free of charge; this will be all products released in 2024 and most in 2023 but there are a select few products that will have entirely new versions made from scratch. Rest assured all current owners will receive a discount on the new versions (which will be significantly better than their predecessors).

Per the image on their forum post, EGHI, LPPD, and EGSS were all released in 2023, EGGW and LOWI were released in 2024. These 5 airports have all been designated as free / 'ported' updates.
LEIB (pre-2023) and KPSP (2023) are designated as cheap paid updates.

I wrote about their full scenery list and when they were each released here.

So, iniBuilds were true to form in the follow-up to their forum post from July.

I guess I’m confused then.  I see ini announcing a stream of compatible airports, does that mean they’re not all automatically compatible?  Or is the difference that Microsoft idle forcing those on the marketplace to sell versions that are forward compatible?  I think Ini sells airports on the marketplace?  I get having to pay for extra features / new versions, it’s porting the 2020 versions that’s confusing me

Compatible ones are airports/aircraft that have a bit extra updates to make sure they work 100% properly. That ini have confirmed are working

No free upgrades for 2024. upgrade fee for 2020 owners, upgrade price depends on the product

That's not entirely correct.

They're offering varying levels: a straight compatibility port will be free (e.g., the v2020 A300).

But if you want the new flight model and other v2024 features, it's a 30% upgrade fee.

Which isn't too bad as long as they deliver the extensive list of additional functionality.

And you can expect this behavior from 99% of developers.

I kinda hope so.

I don't really want to pay compatibility fees for everything I already own...

BUT if the upgrade includes all the new features of v2024, then it's reasonable.

Interesting to see this released, didn’t Microsoft say anything purchased in the Marketplace would work for free in 2024?

I would take from that statement that if the airport works in 2020 you should be able to port it over to 2024 yourself, or do I have that wrong?

I feel like I’m going to have an addon thinning out if everything requires an upgrade fee.  There’s a lot of stuff I bought for 2020 on a whim that I don’t use much so I’ll have to consider that carefully.

I think you're right on all counts.

MS said everything should work as is (presuming the developer followed proper practices)...

BUT to get ALL the new features will require new code, at significant man hours to the devs.

I hope most devs follow iB's example of tiered compatibility.

Yes it is. Upgrades cost, compatibility doesn’t.

No go for me, at all...

Yea, I have a bunch of airports that I purchased thinking I would fly there but never have, or have once or twice in 2 years. I won't pay anything further to upgrade these and am happy let them go. Even some of the aircraft I have I would likely not pay more for again. I actually appreciate the opportunity to review all the addons, I will be much more careful in my purchasing choices in 2024.

Wondering what edition Nadi NFFN and Queenstown NZQN be-just compatible editions I'm guessing.
