1st Flight, 1st Impression thread

Featured Replies

Started the install at 11am EST, stepped away from the computer, came back, was in, created avatar, went to get a plane, hardly no planes available. Quit, checked MSFS2020 to make sure it still ran fine, it did, started 24 again, hung at 97%. Quit, started again, got in, all the planes were there so now its time for a flight.

C152 at Santa Barbra KSBA. Couple of axis assignments just to get the basics and I was taxing out.

I used Ultra setting TAA and enabled DLSS. The world looks beautiful and the airport looked alive with lots of GA planes and ppl around. Ground friction felt realistic as no more turning on a dime. Flight went smooth. Got to traffic pattern alt and the world once again looked great as the plane was getting some nice realistic bounces from the air and thermals..no more rails feeling is what I thought. Got over the water, down to 100agl along the shore and the shoreline looked so much better.

I think I am really going to enjoy this new sim.

I think you may be one of the very few people who have got past the 97% loading screen. Was there for an hour so tried restarting now I've been stuck at 6% for last hour.

I got it working first try.  But now I can't get back in due to server overload....

Short and sweet. Don’t like the load times. Very much don’t like the UI.  It is so disparate from the 2020 UI that transportability / transferability of settings between 2020 and 2024 is needlessly difficult.

I won’t have a real opinion until I get my controls set up and that may take awhile.

I waited at the 97% message for 30 minutes then rebooted.  Turned on my VPN and was up and running in 10 minutes.

That is not the point; should not be anything other than download and activate the sim; we are talking about a Launch of a new well know game under the radar of the press and such; Microsoft should be ashamed by such poor show at launch day; regardless of what the sim is.

🤣

First impression - why oh why do these eeejits feel the need to animate the loading screen and heat up your GPU for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

Second impression - an hour and a half of the first impression.

Third impression - FS2020 still loads

I also started the install right at release... took 7 minutes to download and install and about 50 minutes to start the sim. It gave me Ultra settings by default for my system and I didn't bother tweaking. Chose the minimal assists option and didn't bother tweaking that either.

I also had limited planes (under 10), but I had the 152 and 172, which was enough to get me started. Hopped in the 152 at KPWK with live weather. Took about 5-10 minutes to set up my old Sidewinder FFB2 joystick. Squirrely on takeoff due to the 11kt winds... headed east toward Lake Michigan. Bumpy over the land as you'd expect but smooth once I hit the lake. A little bit of melted photogrammetry at first but sharpened up. Textures were sharp. Flew south along the lake past Chicago (Meigs is back but satellite imagery is still old unfortunately) and got cleared for landing at KGYY. The AI co-pilot assist is chatty and a bit broken (it was giving placeholders for speeds when I was flying downwind a bit hot), but I think it will be a huge help for new pilots. I noticed the beautiful new trees that replaced the ugly photogrammetry trees as I set up for landing. Flared a bit too high... the default perspective in 2024 seems different than 2020 (maybe a bit more zoomed?) and feels more true to life. Taxied to parking and shut down.

Second flight was in the 172 at my old home field of KRYV. Still generic buildings that don't match real life, but the grass and trees all look great. It was raining and low ceilings so I manually set the weather to few clouds. I'm not sure if the Ultra settings gave me DLSS, but I did not notice blurry instruments like 2020. Flew to KUES. Again, the trees look so good, even at altitude. Satellite imagery all sharp. Good landing at KUES and taxied to parking. Ground crew as stupid as they were in 2020, but I didn't notice any vehicles speeding down taxiways.

Both were VFR flights so it wasn't much of an ATC test. When your character talks, it simulates the sound of a headset on your head while talking to yourself... it sounds really good.

I did one of the landing challenges. I liked 2020 a bit better how it shows you the recommended approach, 2024 just draws a line from your plane to the runway. I had to zoom to see which direction I was supposed to land. Botched the first attempt but got 1st place for the second... not saying much as only 6 other people completed the challenge.

Then I got a prompt that stuck on the screen. Restarted the sim and have been stuck in the queue, but will probably give up and try again later while everyone else here fumes in the release thread.

It is only at launch plus a couple of hours at this point.  After a 'day' things will be much better.

What hardware do you use ?

MSI Tomahawk Z790, I7-13700K, DDR5 6000mhz, MSI 4090, 3x SSD 980 PRO, Corsair 360 Liguid CPU cooler, Corsair H1200V2 power.

Stupid question (for whenever i can get in again)...

How do you leave the avatar mode (why do we even appear like this...) and enter the cockpit? No command whatsoever seems to work, camera control does nothing... Is this an error with my sim or do i need to press some weird key combination?

Thank you.

WSAD to move around, hold down the right mouse button to look around. You seem to need to click with with the left button once in order for it to let you select different parts of the aircraft. Be sure to remove chocks and covers. You click the door handle to enter the cockpit.

For actual controllers, a lot. Think I have 27 usb devices hooked up to my tower.
