Mountains 2024

I've gone back to 2020 with Map Enhancement.

I'm using the map enhancement with newer bing also because even in the US large areas have the green road syndrome. Wasn't 2020 supposed to get a bing map update?

You obviously haven't been everywhere, or your definition of 'rubbish' is way different to mine. Your statement that it is blurry a few miles away from the aircraft doesn't hold up either.

At 0:41 - Is that a sheep jumping over a fence? 😄 Cool!

In all fairness, the distant mountains do have less definition (“sharpness”), and are textured at lower resolution (“blurry “), even at TLOD of 400, than 2020, and even that magic app doesn’t help a lot.

I don't agree.  I have been flying between Los Angeles and Las Vegas where the mountains are pin sharp way off in the distance.  Even in the UK flying over hills, they are pin sharp into the distance (I have used TAA and DLSS Ultra Quality with TLOD at 400).

It appears 2024 shows wildly different views at the moment on different PC hardware/configurations.

I think mountains *can* look awesome in 2024. At least up close - probably due to some photogrammetry magic that enhances cliffs etc. Further away I'm not so sure. I have the feeling (not very "scientific", I know) that a TLOD of e.g. 200 gives a higher terrain draw distance in 2020 vs 2024. There's probably lots of YT comparison videos that can verify this though.

Yeah, this is true.

I really find that 2024 (for me) is hit and miss. Mostly a hit as the tones, mountains, clouds etc all look really good. I love vehicle traffic near me so seeing a ton of cars driving under me during a landing at KPDX really brings back memories for me.

But usually, I just stick with 2020 as 2024 still gives me issues over half the time (loading, random blurry textures) etc. Like earlier today and yesterday I was in New York and it looked really...really bad, melted etc. Again today. About a week ago? Looked amazing. And yes, my PC is internet is pretty darn fast.

I made two views from exactly the same location, in 2020, TLOD 200, and 2024, TLOD 400. Forgive the colors, I have problems saving HDR screenshots ...

2024 looks more beautiful and true colors, but the textures are richer in 2020. There are also trees and even buildings in a village on the far coast, in 2020.

For ME it's far more crisp and stable in 2020.

Have you tried reinstalling? That fixed issues for many people. Give that a shot, and also try a VPN to the states just to see. Hopefully it works for you soon.

This is over somewhere between Bern and Milan. TLOD 600 using AutoFPS. I think it looks pretty good. Love the way the cliffs look much more realistic in 2024.

This looks great... What is auto FPS and how do you get your TLOD to 600?  Mine only goes to 400

AutoFPS dynamically manages TLOD, OLOD and cloud quality.Even though MSFS2024 has a similar function (called "dynamic limiter"), I find that AutoFPS gives much more flexibility - including setting TLOD to a higher value than default max which is 400.

A TLOD of 600 might seem crazy, but IMO it's worthwhile while flying over mountainous terrain, as both the terrain draw distance and mesh resolution are very good.

Thanks.  I'll check this out

I went to go look because people are screaming the sky is falling lol

I'm at Aspen here.  With a reasonable zoom range they seem fine to me.  If you go into drone view and simulate a "telephoto" lense - sure they do degrade.  But 2020 wasn't any different for me!  TLOD is at 400 here.  I ran the same TLOD in 2020 whenever I was in rural areas.  In cities in 2020 and 24 I turn it down to 200.
