X-Plane 12 proves ...

In the MS series, Earth has been a globe since FSX.

Yes in MSFS since at least fs9.

But neither do Pole flights correctly which really puzzles me 🥴

Try flying accross the poles in either xp12 or MSFS 2024...

Some might say that the polar regions of this planet pose a bit of a challenge modeling their effects in the on-board instrumentation and that the number of polar flights is low enough to not warrant looking at that in depth.

Then again, why would anybody fly over the poles in XP12 in the first place, considering that the default global scenery ends at +/- 73° latitude?

I would, and polar routes exist, and you have problems with the avionics in both sims if you try to fly them...

In FS9 the Earth was still depicted as a cylinder, if I remember correctly. It was not possible to go over the arctic circles or something like that.

In MSFS, I think you can go over the poles, but there is an issue with the scenery tiles becoming too narrow and too numerous (because smaller, then much more in a tiny space), which leads to display or performance issues, if my understanding is correct. I actually never tried so I don't know for sure. I haven't tried with XPlane either. Anybody knows what happens if you try to fly over the geographic poles ?

Lovecraftian phenomena.

Last time I tried

It files an automatic request for Laminar to fix flying over the poles.

AutoATC Developer

Not much to see anyways given Laminar do not cover above 70N to the pole or 70S to the other pole. They have to fix that first. I have only got half of Antartica with addon scenery and the rest is always water no matter what the season!

Yes the fact they havnt done it yet, means it aint so easy. Like all those northly airports

Yes indeed, most do not appreciate the navigational challenges of those points on a sphere where latitude is 0 and the lines of longitude join at the point. Bedevils real world nav and mapping too. Whole class of polar maps made specifically for that reality.

Anyways this in the offing:

It may help of fix things perhaps they must have done something to get it all together. Not out until February 2025. On my list for when it does!

Release day purchase for me !!!

A thousand THANKS!!!! @coastaldriver Ya Made My Week !!!!!

There is no base mesh but Ortho4XP works fine to create scenery if you have elevation data.

I've flown Svalbard-Anchorage once Svalbard-Anchorage and didn't have navigational problems in a ToLiss A32N.
