Can't Place Files in my 2020/2024 Community Directories

Featured Replies

What is it that prohibits placement of files in the community directories "sometimes"? I say "sometimes" I can, but for the last couple days I can't. I have tried zipping the files, but that still doesn't help. Thanks.

Have you tried using the Addons Linker?  Very useful program!

What has that to do with the problem? Nothing.
He said he had trouble placing them into the folders in the first place. So that is some kind of windows problem and not a MSFS problem.

Yes, I do use it. But doesn't help me when I am trying to put for instance the BS Dukes into 2024 because I have manually put them in the directory which I am not being permitted to do.

I believe it has something to do with encryption and protection, but I normally find that zipping up files solves the annoying issue.

Actually, it is a possible solution..

What is the path to the community directories?

OK.. Not entirely sure what problem you are running into, since you said it used to work..

However, Windows can get overly protective of certain folders and "long file names" can also be a problem.

So, first of all: Can you place links, using the Addons Linker?  If yes, that is the simple way forward.  Put your Duke folder into an addon folder of your choice and use the Linker to put a link in the Community folder.

For the better way forward, create a new folder somewhere where you would like your MSFS Content to reside.

Example: D:\MSFS2024 Content  (this is just an example.. choose whatever location you like)

In this new folder, create a Community folder.

In this new Community folder, drop in your Duke folder.

Then navigate to your 2024 LocalCache folder and edit the UserCfg.opt file.

The last line contains the location of the MSFS Content.

Change it to:

InstalledPackagesPath "D:\MSFS2024 Content" or whatever location you chose.

Having done that restart the sim.

It should now find the new content and the Duke should be selectable.

The Linker can also be used to put links into this new folder, and Windows will no longer object. 😊

BTW, you can also change the location of your 2024 Community folder in the sim, by going to the My Library page..  Whatever you are more comfortable doing.

Be interesting if you create a file with a very short name and try to put that into the reluctant folder.

Actually, I just discovered that seems to be my issue. if I copy a file with a shorter name, I don't seem to have an issue.

I imagine a conference of tech guys at a Microsoft office. One of them says, "Let's create folders with very long key strings of text on the front of the file names! Wouldn't that be a hoot, LOL?"

One of the issues with this is that sometimes, it's not the folder name itself that is too long, it's actually the name of a sub folder and if you try changing those, the addon will not work at all until you change it or them back.

There is a registry change you can make to enable long file paths (you can google longfilepaths (all one word)), though that doesn't always seem to work either.

I have a couple of apps that are sometimes helpful, one being roadkill's unstoppable copier and another called take ownership.

I’d love to be able to do that but even though I built my pc myself, it appears I don’t have permission to do that….
