MSFS2020 won't exit from task manager

Driver change doesn't solve anything, and the bug was there episodically, unsolved for the last 2 years at least, Asobo was unable to reproduce it.

Never had this issue before until now. I'm sure they fix it just like they did the long loading bug in checking for updates. Remember that one?

  • This is the problem with ASOBO. Almost 5 years later and they are still relying on a voting system to fix what they brake after an update.

  • Don't waste your time. I'm with an AMD card and I'm experiencing the same issue. It's most certainly a sim issue that won't resolve until Asobo get it fixed.

  • It seems many are not aware that the "End all tasks" function is available in the right click context menu. This saves a visit to the task manager to do the same thing. It has the same effect as the k

Did you ever think of the security updates that get on your machine with a nvidia driver update?

This is a Asobo update problem, you can change all the drivers you want, no issue until the latest update, over 400 with the same issue, fix this Asobo, maybe ?, they can't, don't seem good at software updates, fix one thing, break three.

interesting i might check my drivers then, im on 572.16 and ive getting the issues.  First time ive had it.  Its only since i either updated the sim or updated the driver,  i did them all in the same week.

I just built a whole new rig from scratch. Formatted all the NVMe's, Clean Windows 11. Went from Intel to AMD. It was happening on my old rig and the first thing I did was install MSFS 2020 clean-naked install, no addons, and it does the same thing. So, don't waste time troubleshooting - It's an Asobo feature.

My 2020 hardly ever closes, it just remains in task manager, so I made a little cmd file to close msfs.

Just create a text file and name it killmsfs.cmd (or whatever name you want to give it). Put the following 2 lines in the file

start pskill64 -t flightsimulator.exe
exit

The 'pskill64.exe' you can download from several places. I got mine from  https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/pskill.html

Put the exe file at the same location of your cmd file

Support (Microsoft Flight Simulator)

May 3, 2025, 20:50 GMT+2

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Flight Simulator Support today.

We are sorry to hear that you’re unable to close the Sim properly on your device. We understand how this can be inconvenient and how it can affect your gaming experience, so rest assured that we will look into it to find a resolution.

We have been trying to troubleshoot this issue on our end here at MSFS Support for the past 10+ days but have yet to find a solution for this “hang on exit” problem with MSFS. A bug report was created last week and has been sent to the QA and dev teams to see if they can determine a root cause of the matter.

This issue is logged into our internal bug tracker and is currently being investigated. We will contact you only if we require additional information. Unfortunately, there is not much that you can do on your end of things now as this will likely need to be addressed by the dev team. For now, I can just advise pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL to manually close out of MSFS and then to reboot the PC before launching it again. I do apologize for the inconvenience that this is causing you.
