New PC for MSFS 24, some questions

Featured Replies

Hi all,

This week my new rig finally arrived and I have spent the last few nights doing the nightmare move over to it.

Ive run into a few issues and was wondering if anyone has experienced them.

The new rig is a 9800x3d, 96GB RAM, 5090 GPU all in the most ridiculously large case (Phantecs NV9) I really should have read the size of it before I got it, it’s big enough to swallow my old pc which was also a full tower! Also weighs in at about the same as a medium sized elephant.

I have also now moved over to windows 11 from windows 10 so that’s also a new adventure for me.

And finally, I have the MSFS 24 premium deluxe windows store version.

My first issue was that on download from the windows store it did not create a desktop icon. Not a big deal but when I located the .exe and created a shortcut from that it doesn’t create the usual icon. (Again not a biggie but just interested if anyone else had that?)

I launch from either that icon or through the store itself.

Another issue is for some reason MSFS doesn’t appear to save my traffic settings. I have BATC and use it with FSLTL to inject traffic, it works fine. However every time I start the sim it turns all its traffic back on. I know that there are a number of places you have to go to turn the traffic off, I have done that and it works until I restart the sim. Then it’s defaulted back on.

Next issue is my MiniFCU, that doesn’t seem to want to work, may need to plug that directly into a pc USB as it’s currently in a powered USB bank.

Fenix external lighting also seems to be hit or miss, sometimes it works and sometimes it only half works, landing lights work but nothing else. Next time they all work. I can’t figure out if this is a me problem or a known bug?

Any input or knowledge from anyone would be most appreciated!

Many thanks!

Anthony Milner

Hi Antig. I can’t really help you with the add ons but I do appreciate moving from Win 10 to 11 is. interesting!

I would suggest just getting the vanilla sim up and running to your satisfaction before applying any other. 3rd party stuff and even though you obviously have a monster of a pc, start with conservative settings and gradually increase them.

I’m not at my pc at the moment but if you open the Xbox app and go into library I seem to remember there is an option to create a desktop icon…

Good luck with your new build!

Thanks for that! One thing I can check off now! I’ve got my desk top icon! Haha

Yeah I’ve not added anything other than fenix and Beyond ATC. I think Fenix is due a large update shortly and I’ve seen that SU3 is also a lot better with quality of life updates, ie the lengthy control binding that’s present in SU2.

On the plus side Red dead 2 runs amazingly! Haha! I have also made sure I have a lot of storage this time, last build only had 3 TB. This one I went with 16. Hopefully I don’t fill it up too quickly! DCS maps can take TB out pretty quickly.

Hi Anthony,

Besides the types of issues you're referring to do you have the big one already figured out?  That would be controller setup?  If not, strongly recommend viewing this video which is the best I found:   https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/669028-great-video-for-controller-setup-in-2024/

For the startup icon here in Win 11 it shows up on the Start Menu (Hit the Windows button to bring it up), not as a desktop icon, so have a look there.  Hidden Trick:  if you ever click on that Start Menu icon and 2024 doesn't start, right click it and select App Setttings.  From there, click Reset, then Repair (NOT the Reset after that), and that should restore normal starting.

Re Traffic:  General Settings > Online > can turn off Aircraft Traffic Type and Air Traffic in career.  Next, go to Graphics > Global Rendering Quality > Traffic Airport Quality OFF as well as Air Traffic OFF.

When I configure a new plane's Custom Camera positions I get the 3D Thermals appearing.  To stop that simply open the Weather dropdown from the toolbar, choose Custom, then toggle Show 3D thermal to ON then OFF and they will disappear.

Good luck, take your time!  We have similar systems so if have perf questions check in.

Hey Noel,

Thanks for your input! I have figured out the desktop icon using DD_Arthur’s suggestion.

Yeah my issue with the traffic is I do follow all the steps you mention. The problem is every time a reload the sim it seems to reset everything to back on. I’ll be honest though, I’ve not actually checked any other setting change I made to see if that gets saved. I’m pretty sure they do. Luckily my control settings appear to get saved.

I had a little splurge and also upgraded my flight stick from a VKB Gunfighter to the Moza AB9 base and their version of an airbus stick. Just learning how to get profiles set up for that.

2024’s control binding process does take a bit of getting used to. Thanks for the video link, will definitely give it a watch! I watched a guy called Mark from Sim hangar Aviation’s channel, he’s got some great videos on setting up the bravo throttles for reversers to work, I have know idea how he worked out how to do it!

Did you keep a copy of your user.cfg file from your old install? That way you can copy that file back into your new setup.

I had A LOT of issues with the MS Store version of MSFS 2024.  Got a refund, uninstalled, purchased MSFS 2024 thru Steam and it's working well.

Data not being saved could be a user/app permissions issue.  Where does that data get saved to?  Cloud/local?

Definitely all saved here not sure what might be happening on your end.

And I've had ZERO issues with the Store in both 2020 and 2024.

Sadly I have decommissioned the old rig. Ie I’ve unplugged it! The new one weighs in at about 25 kgs so moving it about is a bit of a pain. I have resigned myself to having to do it tonight to try and get more USBs plugged directly into the machine instead of the external USB device. I think I may have overloaded it a bit. And the machine actually has a load of USB 3.0 ports at the back. The pain is that there’s this giant case door which I have to open to get to them, which means moving it out a bit.

Yeah I have no idea why just those settings don’t seem to save. All the others do seem to.

I got the new beast on Monday and have only actually had two very brief circuits around Heathrow. What I can say is it runs beautifully. I had an old 8700 with 32 GB ram and a 3090. So a big step up for me!

I know how you feel. upgraded to a new rig for my Bday and couldn't be happier! Congrats on the new rig.

I have the winwing FCU. It did not work until I drilled down into the WW SimApPro driver ap menu, and pasted the paths to 4 certain files in the boxes. From then on it has worked perfectly. I would not have to do that if my MSFS had used the default locations, but I was using new locations, so I did have to do that.

EDIT: the FCU has to see MSFS. To do that, it needs to know where certain files are on the drives.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

For the Winwing FCU you only need the SimAppPro app to update the firmware honestly.
I personally use Mobiflight and there are Mobiflight profiles on flightsim.to for most of the popular commercial airliners.

I’ve now moved the FCU over to an actual USB 3 port on the back of the machine, also got that pesky door off. I think that may help, not had a proper look into it yet. The winwing looks awesome but I genuinely just don’t have the space for it. Waiting on the honeycomb Alpha replacement (the Moza yoke) which I think has a quite long base and hopefully fits without too much trouble!

For the desktop icon, I just run the sim one time and right click the bottom bar icon and pin it. You can then launch from there and the icon is correct.
