I was 18 and remember it well. Just a pity JFK didn’t live to see his dream realised. The commentator also added to the drama. Iconic commentary. 👏

Notice too the effects around the rocket at the end of the video as it went supersonic. Straight up! 😳

Some of NASA's greatest days!

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

I remember it vividly.  I had just turned 14 yrs old the day before.  If I remember correctly, they were originally scheduled to land on the moon July 19th but pushed the launch back a day.  It would have been a nice birthday present, but oh well.  We were all terrified the LEM would run out of fuel before it landed.   But what an amazing joyful experience.  Etched in my memory forever!

I was six at the time but still have vivid memories of this week but...wasn't it 56 years ago?

Okay, I'll put my hands up. I had to Google Alice Kramden....🤔

On a slightly more serious note (and I'm a Brit) surely the greatest moment in American history was when some geezer whipped out that bit of paper with the words 'We the people...' written on it?

Actually, the greatest moment in American history does involve Apollo, but not 11.  It was Apollo 14 in 1971.  They played golf on the moon 🏌️

It wasn’t quite as eloquent as “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”  It was “Let’s see how far I can drive this sucker!”

And then there was Apollo 15, the Crowning Glory of American car culture:

Wonder what will happen if the Chinese make it to the moon?

I was 11. Watched it on TV with my parents.

It was the later missions when they filmed, remotely, the ascent module takeoff that gives me the shivers.
