MSFS 2020 + 2024 dropping high res textures. Good or bad?

Seems like they are tuning 2024 (which is streaming for consoles mostly) then copy pasting settings to 2020 for 'simplicity'.

I'm under the impression Xbox users count for around forty percent of users overall but don't quote me on that.

However the real value in the sim as far as MS is concerned is Marketplace sales. Since Xbox users can only purchase through the Marketplace they represent a higher percentage of Marketplace sales than PC users.

If MS manage to get this on PlayStation you can see where this is going....

I'd have no problem with that, IF X-Split/LM step up their scenery game and give us the 'hardcore' PC sim that there is definitely a market for. There doesn't have to be just ONE sim trying to cater for all. Especially as you say when it seems catering for all is no longer the focus. I can't see Asobo having two dev trees, one for console and one for PC. They COULD split 2020/2024 that way (and keep both markets) but it seems that's not the plan.

It appears these sims are being optimized for Xbox because that's probably the highest revenue stream for Microsoft. Asobo does what Microsoft tells them to do, hence the premature release of 2024. It's all about profits, just like any other business.  Just like the Metallica song said, "Sad but True".

I don’t know if it has anything to do with texture resolutions but some SU16 beta users are saying that 2020 scenery is looking less crisp and has more of that 2024 washed out watercolored cartoonish look. I was looking forward to SU16, but now I’m worried about it. Sure 2024 is great for VFR close to ground pebble counting but in IFR my opinion is that 2020 looks superior.

I'm not really finding too much worry with the SU16 beta textures.  They look reasonable to me, admittedly only with a few flights.  They seem to be sharper in 2020 than in 2024, though that may well be my setup.

2020 is performing superbly too.  Nearly all maxed out with custom mega airports and Sayintentions traffic, PMDG 737 on a four year old laptop! 2024 performs like an absolute drain, stutterfest.

This is what worries me. You can ALWAYS run a high end sim on an older machine by just lowering the gfx settings.. But when it runs fine by default.... Without some clever auto optimise going on (and it is NOT we know that) it's like they're winding back the clock to 2020 hardware, and last gen consoles.

At first i was disappointed with the High LOD would not work

However , the increased DEM with the 2020 maps make up for it. On my system ( beefy 4k) my terrain LOD looks better than SU15 ( that is at default) . The mountain terrain is way more defined ( like a super mesh was applied to it).  Flying in the Alps at 30,000 feet is amazing

In a nutshell, the texture resolution is somewhere between default SU15 and Map Enhancement High LOD.

I still use Map Enhancement ( abet without the High LOD) , because i feel in certain areas ( western Canada especially) .

I do have to increase Terrain LOD in the settings though , plus use Image Sharpening in the NVidia control panel ( i use 0.45) which is a sweet spot.

night lighting is much improved also.

Isn't that simply telling us that it wont be needed anymore and default will have high res in the next update?

Which is great.

Looking forward to su16

Well that WOULD be great if they could actually tell us that instead of this vagueness.

Well that's positive to hear. Do you find that using Map Enhancement texture resolution (without the high LOD) looks less clear/sharp than default on SU16?

I would say it looks a bit better than default. Terrain mapping especially in mountainous areas is greatly improved

But you mentioned that default map quality now appears at a level between SU15 and Map Enhancement High LOD. Or are you saying the improved DEM gives the illusion of the maps being high LOD?

Oh well, time to buy shares in Xplane!

Well it is a 3080 Asus gaming laptop with an i7 so not a potato.

2024 performs really poorly for me, and 2020 is fluid like butter and looks better.  That's what worries me.
