Censorship is disgusting.

While I agree, the rules are fairly straightforward:

Quote

Please refrain from controversial topics...politics, religion, conspiracy theories, climate change, COVID etc.  Topics that elicit or are deemed by staff likely to elicit heated argument, contention, or otherwise objectionable banter will be removed from view.  We allow some latitude...

and

Please no Israel/Ukraine war-related topics

There aren't a lot of "triggered snowflake" posts hidden.  Such posts that are hidden usually also fall into one of the above forbidden topics.

A few years ago, I left for a while, without announcing it, due to some particularly nasty posts in one thread I was following.  Putting the user on ignore didn't help because everyone was quoting him.  Sometimes you just gotta take a break for your mental health.

If your remarks are utterly offensive and disgusting to me I'll still stand up for your right to have your views heard anyway and stand apposed to anyone who puts themselves in the way of me hearing what you have to say about anything. And reel against anyone who thinks they know what is better for me than I know myself and decides that they will protect me from what you have to say. Who do they think they are? I agree RIP Tom Allensworth but AVSIM is in this regard the way he wanted it to be. I say if you are triggered and you are looking for the culprit take a good look in the mirror! The snowflakes are the problem!

I agree with you on the censorship issue, however, AVSIM is a private site and the owner or manager(s) do have the right to decide what the rules of speech on the site are, what is acceptable, and what is prohibited.  I have a major problem with any censorship imposed by a government, but private businesses and individuals have the right to decide what they will permit on their property.

My main concern here on AVSIM is that the rules are clear and equally and reasonably applied.

Wow, this thread really went south, like so many others.  What a shame😔

Here's wishing you would stay Matthew.

Not really. It's an evolving discussion. People have had negative and positive experiences posting here and are simply expressing their thoughts.

Blind acceptance of "the rules" (or the status quo in a broader sense) is a sure-fire recipe for devolution and the ascendancy of 'authoritarianism', for lack of a better term. To question and to challenge is to progress.
However, we all do have personal limits as to how much and what we can accept. I'm guessing Matt reached his line in the sand.

That's really deep.  It just went further south.  Good Bye

Our Kiwi mate, the forum's heart,
A legend in his own small part.
From Auckland, Wellington, or maybe Christchurch,
He shared his wit, a witty perch.
His tales of rugby, mountains grand,
Across the wires, he'd lend a hand.
He'd fix our code, our broken gear,
He'd calm our doubt, and soothe our fear.
He was the glue, the gentle light,
Who made our online world so bright.
So when he wrote, "I'm heading out,"
A heavy silence fell about.
"Don't go!" we typed, a mournful plea,
"What would the forum be without thee?"
His username, a fading ghost,
The one we loved and cherished most.
He left a void, a silent room,
A digital, and empty tomb

Just above  this post is a message that says, "Your content will need to be approved by a moderator".

This has been going on for me for a couple of years or more.  It's OK with me.  It reminds me of some of my posts that were hidden and led to that message.  It's not undeserved and easy to live with.  It's a reminder that I not let my responses drift into areas that could get a thread closed.

On the other hand normal conversations that drift off the original subject are normal.  It happens a lot when having conversations over dinner with friends or family.  It's just as easy to drift back to the original subject as it was to drift off of it.  Sometimes a hint from a moderator is all that's required.

Nice poem Martin.  Couldn't have done better myself.

Exactly what you said right there is what led to Mathew's topic being immediately shut down.  You don't want me
to repeat what the site owner said about it!

I don't know what the issue was with Mathew's topic, but I will remind the managers and owner(s) to be judicious, reasonable, and fair in their forum moderation practices.

This site relies on donations from members, and if the forum policing becomes too officious, aggressive, or unreasonable it can turn people off like Mathew, and then those donations can dry up, and then no more AVSIM.
