Race Car Driving Simulators

Featured Replies

Flight simmers generally have good gaming computers and enjoy immerive simulation. Do you have a race car simulator or any driving simulator? I just got into iRacing. It is thrilling and exciting trying to get a better lap time without crashing. Races are every half hour or so.

I did iRacing back when I was doing real world racing (NASA America Iron, Lotus CUP USA, and various shifter Kart series) … iRacing helps keep one’s reactions and SA in tune.  As far as physics iRacing is still the best racing sim.  The only issue with online racing in public events are the yahoos that like to ruin it for everyone.  I recommend getting on a private racing series within iRacing … usually by invite based on your iRating and class rank.

When you say yahoos are you talking about the drivers that t-bone you at full speed at the first corner?

Ah, yes.....the wreckers. Those lovely chaps who like to ruin everyone's fun. Where would we be without those little gems?

Wow! Impressive. It seems to me one gets to feel a real sensation of speed in this sim, that is; my body reacted seeing him going through curves etc.
Last time i raced in a sim was like 15 or 20 years ago in some Formula one version of that time, maybe it was Ubisoft.
Seeing this makes me want to try again, but alas i have no equipment anymore and at this time i can't afford to both fly and race.

Interesting. I haven't done any racing type sims in years. About a year ago I got a 49" msi monitor and have the computer to run it. Maybe i'll look into a racing sim again.

Yea, or drive the opposite direction and try to take out as many drivers as possible.  Sometimes they even go in as car gangs.

They eventually get booted, but there is no short supply of the yahoos.

Good question!

@SayAgain thanks for the info.

Many years ago my kids were into Forza, so i bought them some Logitech driving peripherals. But they ended up going back to the Xbox game controller(!).

Maybe I'll dust those off and give iRacing a spin (or donut?)? Just have to figure out how to re-arrange the rig to accommodate flying AND driving 😂

I used a very old Microsoft Sidewinder FF wheel and pedals … but these days full on motion platforms seem to be popular.

One issue I had with iRacing was the ability to detect brake pressure to register lockup and program real-time display … not technically a cheat, but definitely an aid as it makes hitting brake threshold much easier.  Don’t know iRacing ever addressed this aid.

Some of the physics were a little off, especially high speed and low speed damping … i think the issue there is just not enough track bump resolution/accuracy when they map the Lidar data from track scans.  For high speed damper you really need 1000Hz and supported track accuracy.  In iRacing this resulted in bumps that had far too much impact on tire contact patch.

With that said, iRacing was still the best in terms of physics.  But has been many years since I tried iRacing again.

My weekly drive is on AMS2 and RSRBR, less frequently on AC1, rF2 BeamNG and ETS2/ATS.

I drive exclusively single player, so IR isn't really an option for me.

I used to use joystick and rudder pedal to drive cars. I once forgot I was flying an 727 in FS9 on background and starting RBR.....miraclely I didn't crash, but FSP got full neg review.

Then I got a 2nd-hand G27, and I still using it now (with TLCM pedal)

I used to race online in Assetto Corsa, but I gave up because hardly anyone else seemed to want to race the road cars, or the classic race cars. Modern race cars are boring to me (too much downforce). I still have my Logitech G27 wheel, but I do not have a lot of motivation now.

The new steering wheels have quite strong feedback which really adds to the sensation of driving when hitting curbs and going through corners. When you shift, the whole steering wheel vibrates harshly to feel like the transmission banging in the next gear.

Try iRacing. They have  a graduated license system and a safety rating system. Cause too many accidents and you could get permanently banned. Plus you have to use your real name so everyone is on their best behaviour.

They now have load cell pedals which vastly improves brake feel.
