I'm having a hard time with MSFS2024 at the moment, due to absolutely persistent stutters when flying mostly complex airliners. The issue is worse when using addon airports but even in vanilla stock airports it happens.  To add, I have high FPS.  That's what makes this hard to swallow.  High FPS and buttery smoothness but stutters occur constantly;  mostly when turning the view to face custom objects, such as airport terminals.  The stutters get worse when looking out at dense, city scenery too (even if it's default).   I've tried every trick under the sun, short of watching IslandSimPilot videos for ideas. 😄

I'm of course not expecting a completely stutter-free experience but for me, this problem became much worse from the moment SU4 dropped.

This poll is to see how others are finding the issue (if it is an issue, it might just be me!)

By persistent stutters I don't mean absolutely constant stutters. I mean stutters that come and go persistently in a given session.

For the record, I have fewer stutters (almost none ever) in SU5 beta. I think because performance  has improved so much. In VR I use DLSS AA Quality and Ultra universal preset. I never was able to use such high settings before. I went from su4, to su5 beta , back to su4, and then back again to su5 beta. The performance update in su5 beta was confirmed.

Stutter free. Still delayed rendering with some aircraft in some areas of the world but, stutter free.

Exactly this, but lately kind of mitigated it somehow fine tuning some MSFS2024 graphics settings.

Good to know this! Thanks for sharing your experience, still on SU4 and I will remain there and wait for final SU5.

Also that, I think it was introduced in final stages of SU4, I hope final SU5 also may fix that.

Copied in from my response in the MSFS forums. I have understood that something was causing this, but I would say that this approach below would reduce the stutters even on the SU5 beta. Beta is a beta, and we take part for these reasons, and it's up to each and everyone to take part, and you just can't know what you will experience, but the team gets feedback which is what they are seeking for those who participate, and if you have a sim that runs very well on a stable version, do a proper and an extra evaluation if you want to give up something that is working.

"I have one tip that is almost the most basic one in the book, but that might have significant effect. By the videos it looks like your sims are running unlimited FPS or a lock that is too high and therefore doesn’t really do much and your hardware doesn’t have any form of headroom since I would assume that they are close to or at 100% load, especially your GPUs.

My CPU and GPU are always running with lots of headroom and at 50-70% on the ground and when the most demanding situations is thrown at them, they have the headroom to deal with it, and panning quickly whilst already running your hardware at an unnecessary high load, it often can be a large cause to stutters.

I have capped my FPS at the lowest I see whilst heavily panning around which is 60 that actually matches perfectly with my old 60Hz fixed refresh rate monitor. Yes, there are difference to 60 and 110-120FPS, but I would rather sacrifice that when the reward is an FPS that always stays at the same number and naturally has a lot less stutters (RTSS and the FPS display has a flat frametime graph) , but I know that even if I can reach 110FPS at times, the sim will get close to 60 in the most demanding scenarios (I am running much lower specs than you are with a 7800X3D together with a 2080Ti). Pay attention to the devmode FPS display and try and set a cap below your lowest FPS seen and afterwards adjust it."

Are there any videos of "delayed rendering" of the cockpit? I have never experienced anything that I would have called a delay in rendering. But maybe I have experienced something that others might call a rendering delay. I have no clue to what anyone is talking about when it comes to a delay in rendering of any part of a plane.

I notice that you have your iGPU enabled, but it isn't in use. Unless you use it specifically for other programs under graphics settings within windows, I would disable that as well. Even though there isn't that much resources being saved, there are still just the fact that every resource can affect the sims these days, and a minimal save is always better than loosing out on the small benefit.

What I do for settings in VR:

Turn on msfs foveated rendering, 50%

Set AA to DLSS Quality.

Set global graphics to Ultra (sometimes only High End in tough areas)

The big performance increases I see in SU5 beta VR is in foveated rendering. FR is already available in SU4 msfs, but it just isn't anywhere near as effective in increasing performance as the SU5 version. I used to use Performance instead of Quality, and Medium instead of Ultra. The improvement was that much in VR. I don't see the same amount of improvement in non VR SU5 beta.

I do enjoy spending almost a criminal amount of hours to get the absolute most out of my hardware and the capabilities it has available, but I also like to provide something to show for when coming with tips for others, and yes, I am still on 2020, but it is relevant for 24 as well. Task manager graphs, RTSS overlay and devmode values are almost therapy for us who seek the absolute best performance. My system is set up in a way that it has a healthy amount of headroom so it can handle the most demanding scenarios I throw at my system. Some would say underutilized, but this is balance for me and does give me a lot more smoothness as the frametime graphs clearly shows.

The main thing is he is flying a light performance hit plane just like the HJET.

So maybe the question should be which plane / scenery do you have the most stutters with?

The results could be revealing.

I get the occasional stutter, but so infrequent that I don't worry about them.  Every once in awhile I still get these very severe, but brief stutters, almost like the sim is going to crash.  They pass and I go on with my flight.  Overall my performance is great with the SUs and DLSS.  It is really amazing what performance I can get with a PC that didn't cost me my entire retirement fund.

Effectively zero stutters for me in MSFS 2024, and that is when flying PMDG 737 and 777 with framerate set to Unlimited.

Exactly!   In my poll intro I stated that the stutter I see are mainly with complex airliners.   Flying the HJET or anything like it there are almost no problems.

@JETPETER2 - I've watched those videos and many, many like them.  No offence intended if you are the content creator but they only ever seem to be relevent for absolute beginners.   There wasn't a single "big reveal" in either of those videos.  Just many examples of common sense settings and configurations that anyone who has been arond the community for a while, is already aware of.

The capping of frame rates is a perfect example.   I've been capping frame rates since around 2004 🙂

Anyway in my case, I FOUND THE CULPRIT!!! (excited caps). See separate thread.
