Backcountry Remote airstrips to fly into and out of

Featured Replies

With the Caravan release and its ability to land in remote airstrips I thought I would start a topic for users to share remote or back country airstrips they have visited.  Today I flew the short flight from Big Creek Idaho (U60) to Elk city Idaho (S90).  Elk City is challenging because it has a curved runway.

There have been a number of Bush country planes released before JF Caravans. Also, quite a few back country airstrips to fly into and out. Check out Orbx PNG and IDA airstrips. I enjoy flying in and setting up camp. Also there are numerous places in Africa to bush fly in and out.

I use FStarter24 or Snapflight to find small airfields for my bush flying.

I love flying Pacific Northwest... there's tons of little airstrips in the San Juan Islands area...  Orcas Island and Friday Harbor are great starting points and then you can fly into grass strips.  There are some nice addons on flightsim.to as well, checkout these devs:

This is 2020 but it does seem to work in 2024...  although it may be a partial downgrade because default 2024 assets (grass runways etc looks nicer)

https://flightsim.to/addon/3349/san-juan-islands-washington

also for 2020 some work those fine

This one is south of Seattle, super nice

Also a lot of the little airports from Orbx I highly recommend, S43 Harvery, 74S Anacortes, 1WA6 Fall City (just east Seattle), don't forget Bill Womack's 7S3 Stark's Twin Oaks... SUPERB 2024 scenery!

Some of these aren't like super back country but I would recommend anyway

Another great freeware product is Misty Fjords for 2024. Dozens of small airfields in Canada and Alaska.

I just uploaded a collection of RASS flight plans for Little Navmap to flightsim.to

These flights are Remote Air Services Subsidy (RASS) flights - better known as the Mail Plane in Australia. Flight services are provided by AviAir, ChartAir and Northern Territory Air Services (NTAS). ChartAir & NTAS are actually providing RASS flight schedules online. AviAir schedules are logged via the Flightaware website. Flights are all over Australia and most airfields are dirt strips. Most of these flights are flown using Cessna Caravans. I have been collecting and flying these routes for a couple of years now and maybe you guys are interested.

I only have MSFS2020 and not all airports are available i MSFS. So the download includes scenery files for the missing airports - but only for 2020.

Alaska has scads of them!

not being Canadian, I’m sadly unaware, but I’m sure there are quite a few interesting strips in their Rockies and such, too.

Plus, there are many communities in The Great White North that receive significant re-supply via airlift.

one thing that helps me find places is to look at payware bush airstrips that seem interesting and then take a look to see if they exist in-sim, too.

Since we’re talking Caravan, also know that there are still quite a few “hydro-dromes” out there. Theres even an AK airfield that has a dedicated seaplane strip within its fences.

Also, the seaplane strips are still IRL active at PHNL! And nearby Pearl Harbor had strips of its own - you can still see the Haul Out ramps dotted around the base

Which also reminds me that during WW2, and pre-war, flying boats and sea planes (bonus points if you know the difference! 😁) were very much A Thing. And it’s fairly easy to find information about Pan Am flying boat routes, as well as military bases that were used.

ETA: an AI Assisted search for bush strips was quite illuminating:

gotta go hit some of these up!

There is a gent with the username northcoaster76 on flightsim.to who makes a ton of Alaska backcountry strips.  Not (up to now) a bush pilot myself so I haven't tried these, but they look nice and he's done a lot of them.  https://flightsim.to/profile/northcoaster76

It's a gold mine - he's got around FIFTY airfields - and most of them FS2024, too!

I'm looking to use the Caravan as a good excuse to fly in some parts of the world I typically don't.  Does anyone know of any non US / North American, cargo airlines that use the Caravan regularly in places like South America, Africa, Australia, Japan or the South Pacific?

I figured I could use FlightRadar24 to fly some real world routes.
