Switching from MS24

Featured Replies

I have P3dv5&6, msfs2020/24 & XP11 & 12 installed. I have lots of drive space. I tend to go back and forth between XP12 and the msfs2020/24.

If I had to choose only one and remove the others the one I would keep is XP12.

This is from the viewpoint of a retired pilot. My flying is mainly IFR.

One thing I have yet to try with XP12 are the various scenery enhancements. I really know little about them. I am going to have to look into these more.

    1. You should be fine 2. Should do 3. Freeware like simheaven will take you a long way. Not sure I would recommend buying scenery right now, there is some great payware for sure, but it will

For my taste, still nothing beats Orbx True Earth.

Unfortunately, only the 3 Great Britain regions were ever updated for xp12. BUT the v11 versions still work fine, and are far more preferable to default scenery.

A good set of ortho tiles works well, too, as long as an overlay is available. The guys at Northern Sky Studios include expansive tiles with their airports, extending far beyond the airfield. Large enough that I’d call them “metro/regional”. 👍

In terms of others, I know many really like SimHeaven, but I find the old SFD Global gives me much more representative buildings (IMHO).

XPlane Map Enhancement. Free or subscription makes all the difference for VFR or IFR if like me you like to glance out window occasionaly.

XPME is decent but you gotta get the subscription otherwise its far too low res.  Feels like FS9 era lol

I am using the free autoortho and it is not perfect. There are some inconsistencies from time to time and a few tiles stucked in low-res (but only like 1-2% of them). This is only noticeable when flying very low, where MSFS for sure has an advantage. But above 3000ft - together with simheaven - it can look absolutely fantastic. And I also noticed that the quality varies a lot from country to country. But I would personnally not call it simply « decent ». It adds a lot to the visual immersion. Here a good example:

The yearly subscription is only about $40 and IMHO well worth it. Over the years I’ve spent near that much on things like airports I used maybe once or twice. And you get the whole globe. An ORBX TE is close to that when not on sale.

I tried the sub the data is a little nicer but still not as nice as MSFS.  And I'd say you gotta be above 10k.  So it's good for airliner pilots imo.

Beg to differ on the good above 10k. I’ve been enjoying some good bush flights around Central America and the Caribbean in the Caravan and King Air350 and seen some great sights flying around mountainous regions  with recently active volcanoes.  I’m not trying to compare to MSFS which I don’t use but in my statement you see the acronym for “in my humble opinion “ so that’s what I meant. But along with the realistic flight dynamics and atmospherics it keep me challenged and happy.
