  1. I've never used the HUD, guess I should try it out. One plane that does have a nice slip to the ball effect is MortonM's Piper Archer III. It is the only plane that I fly that doesn't have a 3D cockpit, but this one is a 2D cockpit that I do fly regularly because it is so good. I have several hundred hours in a Piper Archer III and when I fly this one, it is soooo familiar. One can download it at the org if you haven't already done so. For anyone else to try, go to the Org's website, click downloads and look at the Most Highly Watched section scroll around you'll find it.
  2. Try mapping the rudder trim to preferably a rocker switch, if you have one, instead of using the aileron trim. See if that doesn't work better. Of course it may take some getting used to, I know from using the aileron trim so much. Of course you can just use the rudder input, but that gets really tiring, pretty quickly with these controls not having any real air deflection on them.
  3. I find in beta 11 the planes are now doing a much more realistic yaw instead of banking hard left on takeoff. Before beta 11, I found most of the planes would start banking immediately after leaving the ground, some more so than others but almost all of them would exhibit this behavior, which prompted me to map rocker switches 3 and 4 on my CH Flight Sim Yoke to aileron control with button 2 set for aileron center. I did this because no amount of rudder input would keep the plane from banking. Now I find even the default Cessna 172 SP will hold level with the proper amount of right rudder input. This prompted me to map switches 3 and 4 to the rudder trim, and with just a bit of rudder trim the plane will hold level. It doesn't take very much rudder trim to hold the plane and keep it from banking. I find also when reducing power the plane doesn't start banking right near as much, just a bit of left trim will compensate. Even the default planes seem much more accurate in their modeling. I've tried this with the Cessna, the Stearman does, much better too, it actually acts like a taildragger instead of a wild maniac when you touch back down; and MortonM Piper Archer III is postively a double delight. I've tested with the Cessna, the Carenado F33A, (really shines in this beta), in fact the F33A is what prompted me to experiment, it didn't bank nearly as much as it did in other version of X-Plane 10 or even X-Plane 9 for that matter, so that is what got me to thinking. Next is the LES DC3, (although it never was bad about banking). I hope someone else will try this, let me know if it really is improved or,,,,,am I all wet? Having more fun than the law will allow with this sim.
  4. I simply cut the gizmo folder out of the plugin folder and paste it into the resource folder. When I fly the DC3, I then put it back into plugins folder. I do all this before starting X-Plane.
  5. I think probably this has to do or is related to the swimming problems in scenery textures. Looking into the distance, the roads in particular seem to swim. I've never or usually are not zoomed in on the houses so much, but just now zooming in on a hanger at my airport, I could indeed see flickering. Looks to be related to the swimming problem to me. keeping HDR off keeps the swimming down to a tolerable level. HDR on in daytime makes the swimming textures in the distance stand out more or be more noticeable would probably be the best way to put it. I would think the best way to fix this problem is not to zoom in so close. :-)
  6. I see you got your livery Jcomm. Is not Flybike the coolest painter around? :-) Not to mention a certain DC3.
  7. Be sure you have DVD 1 in your CD tray, then just click the installer that you have extracted from the zip file, and it should install. Are you getting the installer from this page? http://wiki.x-plane.com/DVD_Installers if not get the installer from that link for your correct operating system. Do not install from the DVD itself.
  8. Jcomm, You were so enthusiastic, about the LES DC-3 I could not resist putting this link up http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=17248 This is Flybikes, great bare metal for American, arguably the best bare metal ever made, and if someone else comes up with a better bare metal than this one, I would wager that Leen would immediately come up with an even better one, (if that is possible)!! :-) :
  9. On a whim I was comparing the night sky in X-Plane 10 to a sky map (Aciqra2,2,1), and was really amazed at the accuracy of the night sky in the sim. I'm in Oklahoma City, the time 0451GMT and I could pick out the constellation Capricorn. For deep space objects I could easily pick out M7 to the west and the star Fomalhaut, Alnair, to the south east of me. Back to the west,, I could pick out the Corona Australis and in Sagittarius, the Star Nunki. The only thing missing is the moon, which should have been above and just to the east of Nunki. Most of the star field was easily picked out. Too bad the moon isn't in, I suppose it moves so fast, the calculations to have it correct is probably a bit daunting for the sim. I would say, Good Job LR!!
  10. To set the wave height go to Environment\Weather make sure weather is set for global uniformity, look on the right side just above the graphic for the weather and the set wave adjustments are still there. Apparently you have to reset the wave height each time you run the sim or at least if you change form downloading real weather, as I see my settings are for a 2 foot wave level, I generally keep them at a 0.1 wave height.
  11. I think if you hit the Calibrate Joystick Hardware, and if you have calibrated them in the past, you don't get the dialogue but you do need to run your yoke axis through there movements again. I sometimes do this and it seems to help. In fact after starting the sim the first think I do is run my yoke and pedals through their full movements. Thats while I am in the cockpit and not looking at the settings page. I use the CH Flightsim Yoke and do find that once in a while I have to recalibrate them in the CH native Control Manager, not an everyday occurrence, but every few months I do and it seems to help as the assignments apparently drift a bit. Also you probably already know but you can go into the Null zone page and set the stability augmentation settings. and the linear control. I know some people think or feel this is cheating, but I don't think that, our equipment ages and things change, so I set mine up to feel the best for me, and what feels best for me. If your yoke or as in my case my CH pedals are very twitchy, so I set a larger null zone. Experiment for what feels best and most right for you. Don't be afraid to set the stability augmentation settings if you need them.
  12. I have the LES Duchess and the LES DC-3, and I can't decide which one I like the most, :-) I think the art work on the DC-3 panel is the best, although the Duchess is not far behind, and some people may prefer the Duchess art. The flying, I like the DC-3, it flies so beautifully. Landing, is a chore, I have yet to land a tail dragger without the obligatory hippity hop a couple of times down the runway. The Duchess flies well to. It is very light on the controls, as it is rumored to be in real life, (I don't have real life experience on a Duchess, I have set at the controls of a flying DC-3, in 1997 in Grand Prairie Tx, although I did not get to take off or land it). These two are the only ones of the set you ask about, so can only comment on these. I know this isn't much help in persuading you which way to go, but I don't think you will be disappointed in any of the selections you make. I would not be fearful of any plane that Leading Edge Simulations had a hand in. I have never had a stutter with the DC-3, or the Duchess for that matter, I fly with a 27 in monitor at 1920x1200 and a 46 in at 1920x1080, I am usually on the larger monitor. Having said all of this, I would vote for the LES DC-3. :P
  13. I find the turbulence in beta 9 very much improved. Yesterday, I flew from KPWA to KPNC with a wind gusting 15kt to 22 kt from 150 degrees, a little bouncy but acceptable. at KPNC there was rain and storms again the simulator did very well. Was always in control, without having to over control the aileron inputs. Now the frequency of the gusts still seems to be a little high, but the intensity was quite diminished to what it used to be.
  14. I've been waiting for this ever since Morton started talking about it, and then to see that probably all of my favorite people are working on this project, is icing on the cupcakes. The Archer III as it stands now is the only freeware without a 3D panel that I bother to fly, and I fly it often. If it had a 3D panel I probably wouldn't fly anything else......well except maybe a C172, C152, "darnit", a DC3 and of course when the famous 737 comes out I will use it to actually learn the systems, but probably not to really fly. :P
  15. Keep in mind, a single engine prop plane will move left when power is applied, due to P Factor and prop torque, that is why one must apply a bit of right rudder on take off, and in fact anytime power is applied to a moving aircraft. As power is deceased the plane will not need as much right rudder.
  16. If you are trying to install from the installer on the DVD, I would instead install fom this installer that can be downloaded from this link http://www.x-plane.c...taller-updater/ Installing from the installer that is on the DVDs sometimes doesn't work well. Anyway that has been the case in the past. In fact the instructions on X-Plane.com site says do not install from the installer on the DVD.
  17. It was indeed my fault for not connecting. I forgot to go to File\options\xuipc and click XUIPC Works quite well with the file that Tim Arnot supplied. Tnx.
  18. Here is the cure, the data base for X-Plane is not stalling at the parking places with this file. I still haven't gotten it to link to X-Plane, but that maybe my fault. http://www.tasoftware.co.uk/plan-g/files/PG3_b47.zip Thanks Tim for the file.
  19. Plan G version 3 is able to build its database from X-Plane now. Thanks Tim for a great piece of software. Here's a link: http://www.tasoftware.co.uk/forum/
  20. Thanks Pirata, This was close to what I usually run, but these settings did help the swimming quite a lot.
  21. Cowl Flaps: Keep them open on the ground. I usually keep them open most of the time as long as the temp stays in the low green and not below, at high altitude you may have to close them, only if the temps get below the green. Alternate Air: Used in emergencies Magnetos: Turning them off is part of the check at run up before takeoff. Each on should drop about 100 rpm. Should not be more than 75 rps difference between the two. Fuel Pumps: On when starting the plane, I keep them on until after takeoff and established climb. Turn them back on when landing. I turn them on for upwind leg of the landing. Alternators: These should be left on. If turned off you are using batteries only, and sooner or later the batteries will go dead, You shouldn't notice much change with them off or on, untill your batteries go dead.
  22. As far as flying and control, real world flying is much easier than simulation. The difference, when you are a thousand feet of the ground, you are aware, "I don't want to be sloppy", there is no reset button here. When you come in or a landing, the first time, you are doubly aware, but the difference I think, is just getting the confidence that you can do it.
  23. The DC3 is very nicely done, and the developer has other nicely done aircraft to. As I saw you asking for advice in another topic, if you are looking for a singleengine prop GA plane, the Carenado F33A has one of the best flight models I have seen in a flight simulator. For looks and the feeling on flight, this one can't be beat. Another plane is the T34 Mentor by Javier Rollon. The graphics are exceptional, and the flight model is well done too. This plane gives you a choice of two different flight models.
  24. Fantastic screenshot Rob. Very artistically done.
  25. If you have the DC3 from Leading Edge Simulations, there is a new cockpit livery available from Leen de Jager over at the org. The link is below. http://forums.x-plane.org/index.php?automodule=downloads&showfile=16393 If you don't yet have the DC3 I would advise you, do yourself a favor and get it, assuming you want a quality aircraft file in X-Plane.
