Suggestions Needed for FS9 Upgrade
mynetdude ... this is my mutlmonitor FSX setup. I can also get it to work with FS9 but there are soem glitches (e.g., when you use Alt key to go into the menus). See the video link below. This is similar to what I do in FSX. Before going to Full Screen on the upper monitor I save the flight. Then when I load that flight in the future the screens come back up just as they were saved (outside view on top and panel below). BTW I have to use Full Screen mode when flying or my FPS drops badly. http://www.rogerdodger.net/videos/multi-monitor_2.html

Everyone is okay with flying in a simulation but how about a real plane?
Someone mentioned fear of open spaces. I have that as well and I am not fond of heights (but only if I am out in the open). Heights do not bother me if I am closed in. I flew a number of times with my brother-in-law in small single engine planes and loved it. Airliner flying is ok as well especially since flight sim flying has taught me to understand what causes the different sounds and motions. BTW when my brother-in-law passed away last year I did a memorial flight in FSX using a Cessna. I started from his small airport in Grimsby, Ontario, flew along the shore of Lake Ontario then up the Niagara River to Niagara Falls. After a couple of circuits over the falls I headed to back and landed at the Niagara District Arport in St.Catharines, Ontario. That was a trip we did quite often when he was alive.

Multiple duplicate posts?
Seen them and also got them when I posted a new topic.

Do you run FSX in fullscreen mode?
Full screen for me. I get better frame rates with full screen. I have the outside view on 1080p monitor and 2d panels on a smaller 1080p monitor. Sometimes I use just one of the monitors and fly with the virtual cockpit. BTW I've been wondering what would happen if the screens were not the same resolution.

NEW POLL - HC or not?
I said not HC but I do have a fair amount of $$$ tied up in the hobby. I've been thinking that in the real world there are already too many rules/laws/policies and too much paperwork and too many people controlling my life. When I'm flying the sim I am in my own little world and can try lots of different things that would get me in trouble or kill me in the real world. For me flight simming is for fun and for learning. That's not to say I do not want to learn proper navigation, landing procedures, etc. But I don't want my flight simming to become a chore (maybe it already is with all the FSX tweaking) or become like a job or become too stressful. Been there and done that. Now I am going back to childhood ... new things to try, new things to learn, new places to discover ... more free time to do what I want to do when I want to do it and how I want to do it.

Suggestions Needed for FS9 Upgrade
Thanks to those who provided positive suggestions and thanks to David (vector) as well for his reminder. BTW my "lazy" comment in my first post was a bit "tongue in cheek". I've done plenty of research on these forums and the library and there are zillions of suggestions and available downloads. I was hoping someone could narrow them down for me to those that really work for them. I've tried some freeware in the past and some of it has not been that good. Some suggestions (mostly payware) that I found include: Flight1's Ground Environment Pro REX's Real Environment Extreme Zintertek's Water Zintertek's Airport Environment EnbSeries for Bloom effect ActiveSky Evolution Ultimate Terrain WOAI Aerosoft Airport Enhancement Service (AES) Flight Deck Companion (FDC) Radar Contact 4 (RC4) FSUIPC Have a great day all you flight simmers. Maybe we will cross flight paths in the friendly skies.

Suggestions Needed for FS9 Upgrade
The thread entitled "I put in FS9 last night after many years" caught my interest and perhaps I should be posting on that thread rather than creating a new one. I currently have FS9, FSX and Flight loaded on my flight sim computer. I mostly fly FSX but would like to give FS9 a boost with some addons. Since I am retired and miserly, I don't want to spend a ton of money. I'm also lazy so instead of doing my own search of the library I'm asking for advice from the FS9 experts on what free addons from the AVSIm library and/or elsewhere you would suggest. I'm thinking in particular of scenery enhancements but would also like to try GA planes (single and twin) and business jet, regional jet that are improved over the default models. I do have "Flight 1 Ultimate Terrain Canada & Alaska". I would also consider some low cost payware addons. I have the following hardware: i5 750 CPU o/c to 3.8 Ghz 4 Gb memory 1 Tb hard drive ATI 5770 video card 24 inch monitor (outside view) and 22 inch monitor (panel) Win 7 Pro 64 bit TrackIR CH Products yoke, pedals, throttle quadrant Saitek switch panel, radio panel and multipanel Thanks for your suggestions and for all your contributions to the AVSIM forum.

Good Scenery add-ons for Canada
Hey Maritimers ... back in the 1970s I lived nead Cole Harbour in a new development off Astral Drive. When the boys at CFB Shearwater did their circuits they came right down the middle of our street. Now live in Ottawa.

shift z red info text, what is it showing?
I love it when someone asks a valid question and gets the response "Things you should know if you're flying an airplane!". I wanted to know these things as well when I started out.

Smooth as silk...
I for one can enjoy both Flight and FSX. They both have strengths and weaknesses. BTW ... my four and half year old grandson flew Flight with me yesterday. I controlled the power and he controlled the elevator and ailerons. He took off from the runway and flew around without crashing. Really loved the smile on his face. That was on my office computer with a wingman controller. Tonight he sat on my lap as we flew FSX in ORBX PNW on my flight sim computer with CH Products controllers and Saitek panels. He wanted to flip all the switches on the Saitek panels so it was interesting to say the least with the gear going up an down. lights going on and off, avionics going on and off, autopilot going on and off. Pure joy! He is already part of a new generation getting into computerized flying. Call them (i.e., Flight or FSX) a sim or a game ... I don't care as long as they are fun for both of us. When he is not here I can get serious with either Flight or FSX and enjoy myself as well. I think we need to loosen up and begin to enjoy these products. This for me is a hobby not a job. The products are not perfect but they offer so much. We should celebrate that we live in a time when we have this technology in our homes.

Why I like Flight and hope it succeeds...
I like both Flight and FSX. Two different beasts but both can be enjoyable. My first reaction to Flight was "Wow! Just get in and fly!" No time wasted messing around with tweaks and add-ons. Then a few people on the forum started suggesting some tweaks and I began to think, "Oh no ... here we go again". I can't help but wonder what will happen if/when Flight starts to get more scenery areas and other capabailities (e.g., ATC, etc.) WIll the FPS start to bo down and will more serious tweaking be needed? I use both Flight and FSX. I like Flight when I don't have a lot of time and I like FSX when I do have lotss of time for the "hobby". In fact I just bought ORBX PNW for FSX and love it. But I'll still use Flight from time to time. In fact one thing I like is that I can use Flight on my home office desktop computer as well as on my dedicated flight sim computer and I do not need two licenses, etc.

Help me understand what brings the sim to its FPS knees
I went back into my settings and made sure they were set to the base settings in the ORBX manual (which they say are for a medium system). Instead of unlimited I locked the frames at 30 which seems smoother for my system compared to unlimited even though I can hit 50-60 fps on unlimited. Did several flights in and around Vancouver, into the mountains, and repeated the Victoria to Vancouver route using default Learjet and Baron. FPS stayed around 29-30 fps most of the time. Dropped down to the high teens some times. Tried it with the ORBX Weather 5 (bush flyers lucky dip) and got the same good (for my machine) results. Usually rainy weather destroys my fps but for some reason the ORBX weather seemed OK. Still need to try changing the LOD_RADIUS in the FSX.CFG file. Thinking of getting more ORBX areas now as well as Accu-Feel.

Help me understand what brings the sim to its FPS knees
Thanks bonchie ... I do have water at 2low but my road traffic may be high and I have shadows on. Autogen is at dense. I'll keep tweaking,

Help me understand what brings the sim to its FPS knees
Thanks for the replies and suggestions: I built this i5 750 machine a couple of years ago when that CPU was thought to be one of the best overclockers at that time. Not sure I want to do yet another "Major change in your pc's architecture". I love flying FSX but it can become a bit of a money pit for someone who is retired. I recently thought of going back to FS9 with some add-ons to make it look better but when I fired up my out-of-the box FS9 it looked "old" did not cut it for me. Would moving FSX to a SSD make much of a difference?

Help me understand what brings the sim to its FPS knees
Last night I installed ORBX PNW. Did a flight from Victoria BC to Vancouver BC. Got nice FPS around 25-26 (limited at 26 in FSX) until I touched down at Vancouver Intl. Then the FPS went down to 9-10 and stayed there. I shut down and started a new flight AT Vancouver Intl. While on the gorund the FPS went back up into the 20s. Why would it drop and stay low at the end of a flight but remain high at the same airport at the start of the flight? I'm running an i5 750 overclocked to 3.8 Ghz., 4Gb memory, ATI 5770 video, WS 1 Tb black hard drive, Win7 64-bit. My Cfg file is tweaked (mostly via Bojote's tweaks) and I am using shaders 3.0. I run the outside view on a 24 inch 1080p monitor and the 2D panels on a second 21 inch 1080p monitor. Also have CH Products yoke, pedals, throttle quad and Saitek switch panel, multipnale and radio panel. BTW ... I find the FSX graphics (e.g., popping up trees and changing the shape of hills/mountains as they get closer) to be quite annoying. ORBX scenery is great but the way FSX renders it is awful. Seems to me that MS Flight does a much better job with scenery.

AOPA's Flight Review - "Negative transfer of learning"
I'm loving Flight. Definitely a different experience for me. Last night i did some navigating via VORs, an ILS landing and some general free flight in the RV. Radios are a bit of a pain to set with the mouse. But I love the feel of this game/sim. Everything works so smoothly for me. No setup/tweaking just get in and go. My CH Products yoke and pedals have never worked this well in FSX or FS9. I've been spending way more time in Flight than I should but it is such a blast including the multiplayer function. BTW I have it running on two machines. One is my home/business computer which is low end with Athlon II X2 350 CPU. I use a Wingman cordless controller on that machine. The other machine is my flight sim computer (i5 750, OC to 3.8 Ghz, ATI 5770 video, CH Products yoke-pedals-throttle, Saitek switch panel, multipanel and raido, FSUIPC, 24" monitor for outside view and and 22" for gauges, etc., etc.). I see great potential for Flight as I move into retirement next month. There is room for FS9, FSX and Flight in my world.
