  1. I'm curious about this too. The ability to lock vsync at 1/2 refresh rate of the monitor would be a game-changer for me.
  2. You have me beat there Vic. 8" floppy were gone by the time I entered the scene. We're dating ourselves here, but as I always say, it's better to date yourself than to date no one at all.
  3. Trust me, I'm well aware of this. Every upgrade I've done for the last 20 years or so has been due to me wanting better performance from flight Simulator in one way or another. Edit: Try this on - I remember that first upgrade was to add 4MB of ram at the price of about $100. Yes, you younger guys read that correctly - 4 MEGABYTES!
  4. So I'm not sure what exactly I did to help with the problem, but I narrowed it down to two things. It's by no means buttery smooth, but 30-40 FPS is now tolerable, rather than the sickening mess that it was before. At some point, I had disabled the Nvidia processes that run in the background, like the Nvidia helper service. I re-enabled those and let them run. I also ran a full virus scanner, which located a number of issues. I'm not sure which one to give credit to, but I'm thinking it's the Nvidia thing. I also discovered that I am still very bottlenecked by my CPU. I can up many of the non-cpu-dependent graphics options, and see little or no FPS impact, even at 5900x1800 resolution. The frames I get are really limited based on the complexity of the aircraft I'm flying. Was tempted to chuck some more cash at a 4790K, but that would take a complete rebuild from my 3770K, and I'm not ready for that yet. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions, it always helps to get some new knowledge and fresh ideas.
  5. Yes I do use EzDok and will look in to your suggestion. Regarding the refresh rate on the monitor, my choices are 50 and 60 default, I tried to override 30hz, but the monitors won't take it. For TrackIR I have the smoothness setting to max and use precision mode with the speed set at 0.6. I think the combination of all that stuff running together is what's giving me headaches, but I'll do some more testing tonight and try your suggestions. I appreciate the suggestions.
  6. Thanks Steve, some great info in there and interesting stuff. Up until I upgraded to P3D, I was using FSX DX10 and found that using 1/2 refresh rate (on a 60Hz single monitor), and locking frames to 30, produced a result whereby everything was synced up perfectly; refresh rate, time between frames, and TrackIR panning, to the point where the result was almost as good as when I can achieve 60FPS with Vsync on in P3d. I mean smooth, with barely as much as a single visible micro-stutter. I guess my question is, is that even possible at frames below 60, given my setup (triple screen 60hz/TrackIR), with the current state of P3d and Nvidia drivers and how they hook to the sim? Or am I wasting my time trying to achieve such a thing? It seems like no matter what combination of things I try, I can not achieve anything that I would consider to be acceptable.
  7. Wow, I should update that. That was about 3 GPUs ago. I'm actually running a 980, as referenced in my first post. And again, it's not being able to maintain high FPS that I was asking about, it was about high FPS and smoothness. I can push everything up to max and still be above 40, but it's only above 60 that I get the really smooth panning with trackir.
  8. Thanks for the reply K, and some good info in there as well. I don't normally use the bigger airliners, most of my time is spent in Iris' Pilatus PC-9 and PC-21s, which are demanding in their own right. I am by no means a beginner with flight simulator, and know my way around the sim better than most. I have been doing this long enough to remember launching with a DOS prompt. That being said, I am new with triple monitor gaming, and figured some of my issues stem from that. TrackIR is a must for me as well, I can't imagine flying without it. It seems like it requires 60FPS to be smooth. As I was saying earlier, even just a few frames below that and it jerks and stutters as I pan my head across the view. I might have to deal with lowering settings, weather conditions, and sticking with simpler aircraft for the time being, because when it is running smooth, it is absolutely a great experience.
  9. No, I am not using NI. I was under the impression that it wasn't necessary with P3D. All of my settings are through the Nvidia CP.
  10. To start off, my P3D is set up on triple monitors (through Nvidia surround) on a GTX 980 and I use TrackIR as well. I keep reading posts where people are getting smooth frames below 60 FPS, and various advice about Vsync on/Vsync off, locked vs. unlocked. The only way I ever get a truly smooth experience is running unlocked frames and Vsync on within P3D, and only if the FPS is at least 60. If it dips below that, even 50 creates a stutter fest, especially when looking around with the TrackIR. Am I missing something? I used to use the 1/2 refresh rate in FSX and wish that that was a viable option in P3D, but as I understand it, that is not possible due to Nvidia's drivers not hooking to P3D due to the lack of true full screen mode.
  11. OP here. FWIW I gave Opus a good run this weekend and wish I had relized there was a demo version. What I have found, is that it quite simply does not play nice with other add-ons and .dll's. My idea was that I was going to run the software for just the tactile buttkicker feedback, and use ASN and EZDOK for weather and cameras. The way the tactile feedback works is that it uses the same data as the dynamic head movement, so the DHM must be enabled within Opus in order to get the buttkicker to work. This is a problem because I can't have EZDOK and Opus' DHM running at the same time. As a long time EZDOK user, I can easily change my viewpoint, edit dhm's and the rest very easily. Not the case with Opus. Regarding the tactile feedback itself, it has a long way to go for it to be convincing. I use tactile feedback in racing simulators, and the feeling you get in the seat is much more customizable and dynamic. The feedback in P3D using opus is very simple, and in many ways runs counter to what you would actually feel in the seat. For instance, when you are sitting in a recip prop under low RPM, that is where you will feel the most vibration, and as the RPM increases, the engine vibrations smooth out. The way Opus represents it is a completely linear, low RPM=low vibration, and vibrations increase as RPM increases. It is very weird and doesn't feel right. I think if I didn't already have ASN and EZCA, Opus would be a worthwhile purchase. We'll see if Flight1 is easy on me when it comes to getting my $50 back.
  12. Fair enough. The 970 is definitely the best bang for your buck right now. Not sure what the release schedule is for the next generation of cards, but for me it's either a 970 now or wait until the next gen cards and price drops.
  13. The GTX 970 might just be enough to at least run 1440p resolution with relatively high settings, and 4K at reduced settings. It's quite an upgrade from your current card. I run triples on a 980, with high settings at 60FPS. There is not a huge difference in performance from the 970 to the 980, and I'm pushing almost the number of pixels as a 4K monitor. You'll find a lot of Titan or bust folks around here. IMO that is overkill in most cases. Yes, it will be able to handle anything you throw at it, but there is room for compromise. If I were you I'd give that 970 a shot with that new monitor.
  14. That's amazing. Going to download this today, as I haven't yet purchased any mesh upgrades.
  15. First off, I just upgraded to P3D v2.5 after a many months break, and so far results have been nothing short of outstanding. I was compelled to install the Opus FSI mainly to interface with my buttkicker. I have had EZCA for years and it seems to work pretty well in P3D. I use TrackIR on a triple monitor setup, and only fly in VC mode. Rarely do I use external cameras. I also use ASN for weather, and am fairly happy with it. It does seem to drag the system down, which they will hopefully work out with subsequent updates. I want comparison opinions on both of these issues. Which is better for VC camera positioning and effects, and which would you prefer for whether injection. Thanks for any feedback.
  16. Let me just say this: I just installed Outerra and gave it a run on the Oculus Rift DK2, and it was by far the most incredible flight sim experience in over 20 years of flight simming. The sense that you get of actually flying is as close to the real thing as I think one can experience. I am a real world pilot BTW. I love the idea of a kickstarter, and think that a tech demo to show off the more advanced features of the engine would go a long way in convincing the skeptics that it could support a full-fleged simulator. On the subject of the DK2: I believe that the consumer version of the Oculus Rift will be just the first step in a complete migration away from monitors, especially for the genre of flight sims. I have become frustrated recently at the inability of P3D and DCS to render at 75 FPS (which is a necessity in the DK2), even on high-end systems. It has to do with the legacy code of both engines, and their CPU-bound nature. It seems to me that Outerra on the other hand is not crippled by ancient code, but I would like to see how it would handle all of the things that a full-fledged flight simulator throws at it - physics, weather, AI, and the like. Right now, graphically speaking, it is head and shoulders above DCS, and has an edge over P3D. I would like to see if it can maintain the same graphical performance when the engine has do deal with all of the other stuff, still rendering at a high FPS mark. I think if it can do that, it has a very bright future. I for one, would jump at the chance to get behind this project if it's able to show me a little more.
  17. I've finally got it running super smooth at 60FPS with relatively high graphics settings. The first thing I did, which was key, was to delete any P3d profiles I had in Nvidia inspector or Nvidia control panel. Those settings have absolutely zero effect on P3d, you can forget about them. The next thing I did, which was key for my system, was to set Vsync to "Adaptive" in the Nvida Control Panel under the Global settings tab. Everything else set to use application settings. In P3d, I reset all graphics settings to the default values. Moved the frame rate limiter to unlimited and checked the Vsync on box. From there, it was a matter of moving settings up until I found a good compromise between the look and feel of the sim. I did not change any of the filtering settings from the default values, and I'm also running 512 clouds from REX 4. (Clouds seem to have a major effect on FPS). I also use trackIR and the panning is super smooth. More so than FSX ever was. Also running ASN weather. My system is i7 3770k 4.2GHz, GTX 780. Nvidia drivers are the 337.88. (latest drivers caused blue triangles all over the scenery).
  18. I don't either which is the funny thing. It's a habit I've picked up from years of using EZCA and FSX since you had to window FSX to see the editor.
  19. Found a solution. If I "show EZCA studio" when in full screen, then it overlays and I then have full functionality. It's only when I Alt + Enter to windowed mode beforehand that I lose the full screen functionality.
  20. I have everything working pretty well. The only problem I have is that, while EZCA is fully functional in windowed mode, in fullscreen, none of the hotkeys seem to work. Any one else have this problem?
  21. Even though VR is a technology still very much in development, I have to say that I am very surprised at the lack of discussion that VR, and in particular the Oculus Rift has had within the fourums here at avsim, and amongst the FSX community in general. It stands in contrast to the interest it has garnered with other flight sims, such as DCS, P3D, War Thunder, and X-plane 10. Racing sims have also caught the VR bug, as it's been said that VR offers the most in games where there is some sort if seated cockpit environment. Of course those titles benefit from having a staff around to implement native support. Still though, there are programs which allow for older games to have support ported in with the help of some clever programmers and tweakers. One thing FSX has over those types if games is a fan base that has grown accustomed to tweaking the software to suit their needs, and a host of commercial 3rd party developers. Now I know that there are those of you who think that VR may never catch on as a replacement for a good triple screen setup, and of course it would be next to impossible to use any sort of cockpit hardware while wearing a VR device. While this may be true for some, at the very least it could offer an affordable replacement for the more expensive home cockpit hardware, and may offer a greater sense of realism (visually), and a greater sense of presence within the cockpit environment. I think the future is bright for VR, I just hope FSX doesn't get left behind. Microsoft Flight simulator is my sim of choice and has been for the last 20 years or so. I think it would be quite a shame if folks like myself were forced to choose a different sim because of the overwhelming appeal of VR. In the back of my mind, I think I knew the day would come, I just hope we can get a few more years out if FSX and help from the community when it comes to VR.
  22. Your assumptions are correct. I would restore your backup textures before uninstalling REX E+OD.
  23. There's a forum here specifically dedicated to DX10. I would highly recommend having a look around at some of the posts in there. There are some tutorials around to get it set up properly. You will want to get the DX10 Fixer (Steve's), which addresses most, if not all comparability problems of DX10. I have lots and lots of airport add-ons and don't remember the last time I had a major issue. You can always go back to DX9, but you won't want to.
  24. I too have a gtx760 and my config is very similar to yours. I actually get better performance with affinity mask set to 15 rather than 14. FFTF is set to .18 on my system and don't get the blurries, and mostly fly ORBX. I have also found that the ver. 320 WHQL GeForce driver to be the best at FSX with the 760, least stutters. If I were you I would make the jump to DX10. The looks and performance will blow you away with your system.
