  1. The reason is for the safety of ground personnel, so they can get a visual indication of whether the engine is running or not. If the fan blades are rotating at high speed without the swirl it may be difficult in some situations to see that the engine is running.
  2. Did the same, I have been wating for them to be on sale as I couldnt really justify $170, at this price they were to good to leave there. Unfortunately I'll now be away from my sim computer for 7 weeks  Oh well, something to look forward to when I return!
  3. Once the Pro edition is released I'll definately pop over sometime for a shared cockpit flight!
  4. Cheers Dave! I'm using a combo of ASN, HDEv2 clouds(from avsim library), Gabriel's sky textures (thread on Avsim somehwere) and ENB. It says its for FS9 in the HDEv2 download but the textures work perfectly in FSX.
  5. As far as I know none or a very limited number were given an afcad upgrade. SP upgrades were for landclass and vector issues and the most recent upgraded the night lighting to the same standard as FTXG aswell. Check out OZx and Ant's Scenery. Great freeware scenery additions for bush, GA and airliner flying. http://antsairplanes.com/scenery.html http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/category/1-ozx-scenery/
  6. Theres your problem. This gauge calls the Active Sky Next API to get the realtime position and intensity of rain in the simulator, if you don't have ASN the gauge can't call the functions so it wont work.
  7. This is definitely a pet peeve of mine! One of my very good friends just left for New York to study Film (he wants to be a director) and I warned him that if he makes a movie with planes in it that factually wrong, there would be hell to pay!
  8. Similar in terms of features, yes. However it doesnt look as good(hopefully that will change) and it is an offline application. It also features an ACARS style printout, as oppesed to the Aurasim EFB style output. I wasn't attempting to go head to head with Aurasim, I did this project to practice programming for university a few months ago, but I've decided to work on it a bit more (and release it at some stage) now that I have a little less work to do.
  9. Hi everyone, I have been working on a C based performance calculator for the Q400, which outputs an ACARS style performance sheet. I've tested the program myself, but I'm looking for a few people to test the current beta version to iron out any bugs before moving to a release version. Please be advised it is pretty barebones and nothing fancy at the moment. If you're interested please drop me a PM with your email address. Thanks,
  10. If you don't use both the rudder and ailerons in a turn, the turn will be uncoordinated, either skidding or slipping and not a comfortable feeling for passengers. In most large aircraft ailerons and spoilers are used simultaneously to bank the aircraft.
  11. Back to basics: In a small aircraft with little or no automation (eg Cessna 172), you would commence a turn by turning the control yoke and applying the necessary rudder inputs to keep the aircraft in a coordinated turn. This is basically what happens in larger aircraft except that the Yaw Damper manages the rudder inputs to balance the aileron/spoiler roll inputs (processed by various flight control computers before any controls are actuated) by the pilot.
  12. Yes, you can yaw manually, but it's quite hard to actually "turn" without using ailerons Primarily to keep the aircraft balanced in flight, usually in a crosswind or turn situation. Using the rudder pedals to actuate the rudder fin.
  13. You have just convinced me to upgrade to P3D, I was sitting on the fence because of this issue with the RA Duke v2. As this appears to be a fix, P3d here I come! Thanks for the solution.
  14. Thanks for the offer, but I will probably be able to pick it up on DVD from the library.
  15. The show does look promising, unfortunately it probably won't be shown here in Australia. I follow a blog of a pilot who will be featured in that series, check out his blog here. He's done some really great flying videos aswell, you can see them here.
  16. +1 for the Realair Duke v2, a great plane that I am currently flying around Australia. Also check out Ant's Airplanes Tecnam Sierra, a great one for low and slow.
  17. Hot off the press: A few snaps of the A350 on its World Tour as it approaches Perth's RWY 21, around 2 hours ago.

  20. It's always a good idea to check the ERSA (En-Route Supplement Australia) for more info regarding the operations into any airport, especially the private fields. For example the page for the Telfer Mine airport. 24hr PPR and the airport closed at certain times due to the mine blasting, wouldn't want to rock up just as they started and have to divert. Hahaha, got a good chuckle out of that one! Don't even get me started on our rubbish public transport system.
  21. Some of those airports are also privately owned (by mining companies) so you need their permission to go there. A good chunk of those probably also only have a gravel or dirt runway, so you wouldn't want to be operating jets into them. Although we do have one operator, Cobham, who pioneered the gravel kit for the Avro RJ series of aircraft http://www.cobham.com/about-cobham/mission-systems/about-us/aviation-services/commercial-aviation-operations/products-and-services/fly-in-fly-out-%28fifo%29/gravel-runway-operations.aspx Highish wind speeds are quite normal for all of Australia, on the ground and high in the FLs. Perth is the third windiest capital city in the world, if the winds are below 10-15kts its a pretty calm day! We had a large storm front come through here late last week (+TSRA, V/35G55), so I expect you were getting the tail end of that as it passed over Sydney (not really sure of the usual conditions in Sydney as I've never lived there). Light to moderate turbulence and some wind-shear definitely normal around the Perth area due to the escarpment to the east which tumbles the prevailing wind around the airport area. The winds at the higher flight levels are strong more often than not, just look at skyvector over the Great Australian Bight. The other day on flightradar I saw a QTR 777 cruising to Melbourne at 650+ kts! Yep gotta watch out for all the creepy crawlies!!! (and the tourists!) hahaha
