  1. You'd be surprised at how far you can see from 1000ft. The theoretical visual horizon at 1000ft agl is almost 39 miles (approximate distance to the horizon in miles = 1.23 times the square root of the eye height in feet - https://aty.sdsu.edu/explain/atmos_refr/horizon.html). Even further if you allow for atmospheric refraction! Obviously met visibility or obstructions/high ground can significantly reduce that but it's still potentially a long way.
  2. Don't confuse 4k textures and 4k resolution - they're not the same. Look here for an explanation: https://tay.kinja.com/screen-resolution-vs-texture-resolution-a-point-wort-1786369820
  3. I would also highly recommend EVGA PSUs. I have an 850w EVGA SuperNOVA G2. By default, under normal loads the fan is switched off but even under heavy load I can't hear it when it's running. It also has high-quality Japanese capacitors and a 10-year warranty.
  4. If you want a comprehensive PSU calculator, try: https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator A 650w PSU should run the OP’s proposed system. However, it’s worth remembering that the peak efficiency of a PSU is generally at around 50% load, hence one of the reasons why people tend to get bigger than they need.
  5. I can't help thinking that if all of those people who claim "no seasons, no buy" actually followed through with that (and I have my doubts that most would), I don't think that it would actually have a significant impact on sales. It's like all the other "no xxx, no buy" threads (you know who you are), if the released sim is as good as promised I'm sure the temptation to buy will just be too great. As much as I'd like seasons, I'll definitely buy it without them if the rest is as good as it currently appears.
  6. I'm sorry but 40 posts in the last 12 months in that forum (many by the same people) and only a single screenshot hardly constitutes cockpits being constantly shown!
  7. So there's something wrong with questioning a post which appears wrong or exaggerated? That seems fair to me as long as the posts are reasonable and not insulting.
  8. But it's still hundreds of times the number of points over what's currently available in the FSX-based sims!
  9. We definitely do see things differently then. I'm still a little confused as to how a set of controls, the odd panel and some extra monitors could cost "zillions of dollars" and, more to the point, where these are all being constantly shown off.
  10. Difficult to imagine as the SDK has apparently not yet been released. It has only been fairly recently that PMDG have expressed an interest in the sim and announced that they would be developing for it. They had previously been quite dismissive about it. Also, there's a good chance that many of the devs who are offering a free add-on upgrade to the new sim may just make it as a simple port across. Personally, I'd much rather save my money and spend it on something which was definitely created specifically for the new sim and makes the most of all of the new features.
  11. Where are these constantly being shown? Cockpit builders, like VR users, are definitely in the (small) minority in the hobby as a whole. Please, no more VR threads, I think the message is out there now!
  12. Up to 32", I would go for a QHD monitor, especially if you opt for a 27" (or smaller). With that screen size, at normal viewing distances you won't see the individual pixels at QHD anyway so a 4k screen would be wasted. Any benefit you'd get from potentially not needing AA (the normal argument) would be more than offset by the performance penalty of running at 4k. If you intend to get a 40" screen, or larger, I would go for 4k and accept the performance drop. I have a 32" QHD monitor and I'm very satisfied with the image.
  13. @kmanning - further to what SteveW said, with the sim running, right-click the small speaker and select "Open Volume mixer" from the pop-up menu. There should be a volume control for the sim. Make sure that it's as high as it will go - it will be limited to the device volume in the left-hand column which controls the maximum volume of your system.
  14. I don't have either of those but is that for every airport in the world?
  15. The amount of data required to do this for all airports, worldwide, would be absolutely mind boggling!
  16. You'll never see "perfect" helicopter aerodynamics/physics in a home flight sim - there's just too much going on. I'd settle for "better" than what's currently available.
  17. As mentioned in the conclusion, I think the bottom line is that for everyday real-world applications and OS boot times, the difference between PCIe 3 and PCIe 4 is barely noticeable. The latest graphics cards still have headroom in PCIe 3 so won't benefit at all from the latest version.
  18. I'm sorry but without providing evidence for your earlier quotes (about the size of communities and number of users, for example), you also seem to fall into this category. Whilst it's undoubtedly more realistic to talk to "real" air traffic controllers, not being able to do so doesn't stop you from carrying out real-world IFR procedures in an offline sim. You don't actually need someone to give you permission to fly a particular SID or STAR, for example. Other than for something like a ground-controlled approach, there's very little which genuinely requires you to talk to someone to complete the procedure.
  19. How were my comments in the ealier post dismissive? I was simply pointing out the facts. Also, I think you misunderstand the effect you're referring to. It has nothing to do with what you represent, but everything to do with those of low ability believing that they know much more about something than they actually do. Is that really what you meant? I am a real world pilot (or at least I was until I retired a few years ago after almost 40 years of professional flying all over the world).
  20. Firstly, unless I'm completely misunderstanding why you quoted me, I take it as a personal insult that you think that the Dunnig-Kruger Effect applies to me (or most other people here, for that matter): "A common reading of the effect is that those people who are least competent at a task often incorrectly rate themselves as high-performers because they are too ignor ant to know otherwise." I've never claimed to be a "high performer" in the Avsim forums. I only post to either ask a question or when I consider that I know enough about what I'm saying to be able to contribute to a thread. Very few people here could be considered as true experts but many have experience which others find useful. Secondly, exactly what was incorrect (or controversial) in my post that you quoted? I also have hardware which may not work with the new sim but I'm not unduly worried as I know it will still work with the sims I already use. As I said earlier, no one is going to be forced into buying the new sim. Where is your evidence for any of this? Exactly how many users does the cockpit building fraternity have? "the vocal posters at Avsim and the membership in general do not use real world procedures" - and you know this how (other than by guessing wildly)?
  21. For all of those worried about their existing, expensive hardware, what's the problem? Your hardware won't suddenly stop working the day the new sim is released - it will continue to work with whatever sim you currently use. No one will force you to buy a different sim. If MS hadn't announced the new sim, you would probably have happily carried on using your hardware with FSX/XP/P3D without a second thought. In that respect, nothing has changed. It's a bit like saying you have expensive custom alloy wheels for your old sports car and you're worried about not being able to use them on a new Ferrari!
  22. Less than £600, if this is to be believed: https://www.computing.co.uk/ctg/news/3083584/amd-ryzen-9-3950x-price It will probably still be cheaper to buy a 9900kf, which is, arguably, still the better gaming processor. That said, if you also use your system for things other than gaming (like rendering, for example), the 3950x looks unbeatable at the moment.
  23. Not necessarily, we really don't know anything yet. You may just have to accept that, on your system, it probably won't look like the trailers and videos?
