After making all choices in REX, how long does it take to start FSX?
That depends, there are essentially two ways to go about using REX...You can simply replace the textures in FSX with the ones in REX, in which case it won't really make much if any difference on load time, as it will just be using a different set of textures. Or, you can start your flight, have REX download real weather and then import what it has generated into FSX by connecting it up to FSX when your flight is commenced. That does take a minute or so and FSX freezes up when it does it (a message appears across the top of the FSX screen advising you that will happen similar to the ATIS text), so I normally do that whilst preflighting. That second way and FSX freezing up for a minute might sound like a pain in the &@($*, and I'd prefer it if it did it instantaneously, but when you see the difference between what FSX does to D/L real weather and interpret it, and what REX does, you'll be happy to wait that minute, because REX does a spectacularly better job of it. I can tell you that I have done that numerous times at EGCC and then looked out of the window (since EGCC is only a couple of miles away from me), and it pretty much gets the weather spot on, with what is on screen looking a lot like what is over my house. That is my measure of whether it is any good, and I've always been impressed with it on that score even discounting the fact that it is prettier too.Al

I have to chime in here. REX has been remarkable in the way it transforms FSX. The clouds, yes!; the water, yes! But I've not read anyone mentioning the overall improvement of lighting of the sky. I used to fiddle around with the brightness, gamma controls of the video card and the monitor to make the sim display day time in a believable way. It was always too dark or too light and washed out. Since REX, daylight looks like daylight. Reflections in the cockpit are more pronounced and believable. It is an absolute "must-have." Thanks REX team!Randall

Interesting thread. I have UTX, GEX, and ASA (Active Sky Advanced- but not the Texture package that comes with), and I understand that other then the option of using REX as a weather generator for FSX, that none of these add-ons that I already have would be superceded by REX- at least that's what I understand about this somewhat complex issue of scenery and textures. But I also have FEX, and this is where my limited understanding tells me that FEX does the same things as REX and would be basically superceded ( as REX is better)- do I have that right? Thanks, Bruce.

ASEL, Instrument.

KBJC, Colorado.

I don't necessarily think that REX is 'better' than FEX, just different, they both make things look pretty as far as I can tell, although I don't actually have FEX, so that is something of a casual observation.Al

It was a toss-up for me about whether to go with FEX or REX. I had Flight Environment for FS9 and loved it. After much delay in going back forth between the two, I finally decided to go with REX--pricing was one consideration. I have been extremely satisfied. I'm sure there are plenty FEX users who are also very satisfied. If I could justify the expense, I would probably get both just for the sheer fun of it all.Randall

That's one big list Tim. I'm looking forward to REX 2.0. Can I just ask what this is: "Added spotlight specific for RealAir's Beechcraft Duke". Sorry if it sounds a bit of thick question.Quite frankly, I couldn't fly without REX on my flights, the change it gives to FSX is staggering. CheersRhydian
Rhydian, some users of REX have experienced a weak "beam" for landing lights for the RealAir Duke. We have added an option for these users.
I tip my hat to the creators of REX.
Thanks for that Michal! ;)

McCrash, it all depends on what options you choose in REX. It does take time loading all textures into FSX as there are many. Also, if you are customizing the coloring algorithms for the water files it will take a little longer than usual. However, we have streamlined many processes in REX2.

Tim, I just got REX a month ago. Great package. Is the upgrade to v.2.0 easy? How is the authenciation done for existing customers?

Hi frankla:Thank you for choosing REX, and for your kind words. It will be available where you purchased REX, at the flightsimstore.com. The same wrapper format will be used, so you will need to enter your information that was delivered to you via email when you purchased REX. It will be approx. 100MB d/l. You just install over your current installation. Just point to your REX install directory, and it will do the rest ;)Thanks again,Tim

After all your enthusiastic comments I've finally relented and bought REX even though I have FEX.It's a shame your servers are slow Tim, otherwise I could have got it installed and had a quick flight before having to go out. Struggling at a little over 400K sec whereas will Flight1 will max my 2.3MB sec cable out every time.

It's worth the wait. Trust me.

Hi,I was thinking about buying REX too a while ago. I hesitated though from screenshots I always thought REX has wonderful textures but i not able to generate a fully covered sky. I'm using ASX+XG atm and when the weather should have full cloud coverage, ASX does this nicely as well. A lot of screenshots from REX only show a cumulus here and a cumulus there - multiple clouds on the same height level besides each other but not enough to create a convincing fully clouded sky.Is that just a "mis-observation" of mine? Or is the cloud coverage of REX somehwat limited?
