FSAddon Publishing link Shock

Featured Replies

I clicked on the link this morning to look at Tongass Fjords FSX anddon. After people raving about it.The only problem is I was not shown the product like I wanted to see instead I was almost dressed down by their comment on software theft which I don't do. I know it must be a problem it just seems that somebody that would take the time to follow a link like I did is not their problem just my 2 cents FSAaddon it really turned me off. It may cost you sales.

I just saw after your comment and I must say that:1. It's sad that the state of piracy is such that they feel compelled to post such a message. I don't blame them for writing it.2. It should have been handled by a bold link at the top of the page "Message to Torrent Downloaders and Pirate Bay" linking to that page.Piracy is criminal but is probably only going to get worse until there is global cooperation to combat it. Technology only makes it easier. It sucks and it's possibly killing the addon market, but it won't be going away. It has become a business expense just like shoplifting and employee theft is for brick and mortar stores. And that means we will be paying more for addons as that expense gets passed on to us.But that message should not be the first thing that greets a potential customer. It makes you frown and frowners don't use their credit cards.Thaellar

We don't always act in our best interests, none of us. Of course FSAddon should have kept their eye on the ball, presenting a refreshing and warm welcome to visitors, instead of growling and snapping at everyone that comes within range. Of course they are turning away some new paying customers who would rather not get involved with someone who has "lost it." At the same time I don't think it is fair for you or anyone else not to buy their product just because of their temporary insanity in their anger and frustration over their store being robbed. They still make some of the best products in FS, and are, from what I know of them, some of the kindest and (usually) gentle people in the hobby that are held in the highest personal and professional regard and respect.Perhaps we (together) may not be able to police who steals what, but perhaps we can force those who belong, or might in the future, to the flightsim community, to at least admit their crime to themselves. Why not make each person, each time, who visits the AVSIM site (and any other), member or not, sign a digital popup statement that records their IP address, declaring that he/she does not have any stolen FS software on that computer. I think evidence will show that many who do steal software or hedge or cheat a little here and there, have twisted things in their own mind so that they can justify their crimes to themselves, but, and this is a big but, many will not directly lie about it. That is a line that the majority of people, of any age group, from every culture, just won't cross. Lying puts a big lump in the throat that is just too hard for most to swallow. It will force many to seriously reconsider their moral choices, tying the conscience to conduct. It becomes more painful to prod the heart than to pay the price. Hey, words are cheap and easily typed when talking about others, so I will start first:I do not have any stolen or pirated, or illegal copies of software of any kind on this, or any other computer.Stephen

Treating the genuine, supporting, loyal customer WELL is the key to killing off piracy. Technology can't stop it, so creating a brand and products that makes people WANT to support it is the way forward. Piracy will be killed by psychology, not technology. Thus, the FSAddon approach is distinctly unintelligent and lacking in wisdom in my view. In fact the most appropriate word for what FSAddon have done is probably 'arrogant'.Treating all of your customers with such disrespect and contempt is a pathetic strategy to kill the pirates. The other consideration here is, are these developers (a few have done similar things like this lately), merely doing it to raise publicity ...... ? Think about it.David

Yikes! You guys above me are all joking right? You all need to visit a golf course immediately and work off some of the strain and pain you're going through by visiting a commercial website that warns software pirates about theft (AKA shoplifting). I see theft warnings every time I enter Wal-Marts and it doesn't bother me and I still buy their products! Respectfully,Jim Young

Nah, too hot outside here to golf today, but I will turn the fan up and hit the Bowflex for an hour or two. That should burn off any excess negative energy I should think. Time to get off the computer anyway! If I am not going to actually fly something somewhere, why hang around the forums pondering imponderables? :( Stephen

If there are thoughts of such actions being done by publishers merely for publicity's sake, why not ask the man himself? Francois Dumas is on these forums. Quite sure he'd be happy to discuss such matters...

Hi Jim I guess I follow links on trusted site like Asvim to find out about a company selling its products, I wanted to buy not a lesson in their theft problems. I would not of cared if that had been posted at the end of the page they were directing me to. I was looking to see their ad not their problems, Would you go to the Golf course if they said when you walked in Hi golf club thief you know who you are or would you rather just play your game and maybe at the end they say thank you for your support. We really thank you and hope you enjoyed our hard work can you help us out with the theft problems we are having and tell all your friends it really does hurt everybody when one person steals from hard working software makers. To be honest if wal-marts greeted me at the front door with that I would shop someplace else never had that happen. In the walmarts I have been I really dont see theft warnings every where.I really think FSAddons is hurting themselfs thats why I posted it. They should just be more tactful I did not follow the link to see software theft ad I followed it to see their product. Thats what bothered me.

Hmm...No grocer's store owner would put up a big sign at the entrance with the message "Dear shopliftersYou know who you are

Spoken like a true consumer who could care less about anything other than what he wants. Try wearing someone else's shoes for a minute, maybe a developers. It truly amazes me that people still get upset with the person trying to protect their work instead of the scum sucking theif, usually because it inconveniences them.Sad thing is, the person or persons that upload the seed files to the torrent sites are more than likely interacting with you on the various FS forums, so the message is on the correct page at FSAddon.I vote for a NATO special forces unit with jurisdiction in every country and extreme prosecution for users that use these torrent sites to stop it. Maybe a bit extreme, BUT you are dealing with scum of the earth with no morals and countries that could care less that give them safe harbor.

That was pretty uncalled for Mesa, whoever you are. Why don't you post your real name in your sig, as per AVSIM rules, rather than do a drive-by hit on someone in these forums? What is it with the drive-by's by no-names today?

Well, at least this thread got me to look at the product. I don't suppose it offended my delicate sensibilities too much. Small operations take things personally, and there are too many people in general happy to trot out the old "of course piracy is wrong, but..." (as well as actually stealing the goods, of course.)And WalMart has spy cameras everywhere. Happy shopping. There is no solution to piracy, or no psychology that will work. The internet makes it easy to do things you would not otherwise do if you could be seen doing them, like stealing software. Some people will have the character not to do it, and some won't. If a broadside stiffens the spine of someone who is wavering, or causes a conscience pang, then more power to them. I'm not going to curl up my toes and faint.

I posted about my past and current dealings with theft in the last thread like this, and I'll say it again. My customers DO NOT CARE ABOUT THAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!It's not their problem or concern, nor should it be.

I'm sure that message has them shaking in their boots, and will soon put an end to the pirates and torrent sites.
