November 1, 200916 yr I have Active Sky X, but haven't used it for months as often unrealistic cloud layering detracts from the final result, so I just use the default weather with some better cloud textures. Any solid recommendations for weather now? Thanks,NoelHi Noel, with such an extensive addon list in your sig, I'm sure you're already aware that ASA (with earlier HiFi Simulation versions ASX & AS 6.5) and REX, seem to be the only "game in town" regarding a replacement to the default weather engine. A good question. I assume you would like to hear more from other users about their experiences, preferably from those who have used both addons - you know, sort of a comparitave review: objective user opinion about the strengths and weaknesses of each?. REX 2 maybe? I guess I'll have to just search on REX 2 and see if there is much on that one. November 1, 200916 yr Active Sky Advanced. Turn off DWC (direct wind control) and set cloud layers to "20". Only way to fly. Dan George (woodhick)Check out Greenbrier Aero Club, the VA for and about the GA pilot.
November 6, 200916 yr I tend to switch between ASA on the one hand, or on the other hand FSX weather plus all Peter Dowson's 'tweaks' in FSUIPC. I find the transition between different weathers is better in ASA, but it does have its problems; for example it does not always connect or reconnect with FSX when it is started up. There are sudden random increases in outside temperature, which is very upsetting to some planes, particularly the big jets. Upper level winds get 'stuck' - you can start off in the jetstream over Europe, and still have exactly the same windspeed and direction in the lower altitudes several hours later. ASA doesn't realise that when a METAR reports cloud height, that is a height above ground level, not sea level, so that at places like Denver a BKN050 cloud looks like the Goodyear balloon, floating alongside the control tower. The main problem with ASA at the moment is that HiFi support appears to be a bit thin - it just appears to be one man, working evenings in the mid-USA, and things just aren't getting done. I don't know what happened to the rest of the team. Perhaps they are working on the next version. Petraeus
November 6, 200916 yr ASA and REX2. I use that all the time, no problems, very happy. Tomaz Drnovsek My FSX Videos My AVSIM Gallery

Any solid recommendations for weather now? Thanks,NoelI used to be an HiFi supporter for years but swapped it for REX2. Graphics of REX2 are outstanding, clouds much better. Also, had weather issues with PMDG planes like B747 and MD11. Not so anymore with REX2. The REX weatherengine seems to work nicely (though I'd like to see an option to turn the green ribbon of telling me about updating the weather). Some folks use REX2 textures and ASA as weather engine but I never tried this since it was too complicated for me (hey, I am a n00b) and I was told that ASA can use only one texture set, i.e. it cannot depict REX2 textures based on real weather. Maybe I am wrong and there is a workaround now? But then I will see the wind shifts with ASA again, sending my PMDG big irons in fancy loops...Phil Phil Leaven i5 10600KF, 32 GB 3200 RAM, ASUS 4070 12GB EVO, Asus ROG Z490-H, 2 WD Black NVME for each Win11 (500GB) and MSFS (1TB), Rolling Cache 16GB, Photogrammetry always OFF, Live Weather and Live Traffic always ON, Res 2560x1440 on 27"

November 6, 200916 yr Author Thank you all for chiming in. One of the issues I have with ASX is that you get cloud layering that just looks very unnatural in certain instances, such as clouds that have almost a more vertical orientation poking up thru others that are more laminar and flat, and this looks very unnatural. Are there setup options I am missing that could help with something like that? I think another thing that had me stopping ASX many months ago is how long it took to initialize, and processing overhead could be steep at times. Any direction on optimizing ASX might be something I should be doing too.
