O&O Defrag for FSX

Featured Replies

Hi,I was actually looking to pick up two 80 Gig SSD's, the Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2M080G2R5 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive. If I could find them in Manhattan, N.Y. I'd get them today.I would like to put Windows 7 64 on one drive and FSX on the other. I think this is the last item in my latest FS only system hindering FSX's performance.

Hello MikeJust let O+O12 defrag the c:\ drive in Zones as normal, when you do the FSX drive deselect Zones and Defrag this Drive as "name".Here is how C:\ will be laid out with "Zones" selected, this will give you quick boot times as does Perfect Disk. And here we have deselected Zones, instead choosing "name defrag" for the FS driveNotice that all the files are at the start of the disk (fastest area) and in front of the area reserved for the MFT, some files after the MFT area which I added last night will get moved on the next defrag run.All the FS directory is now in name order. It is all about the speed at which FS loads textures and bgl's whilst flying not about boot times. If you are moving to SSD's soon I would not bother buying another defrag program as you will not need one on SSD's, in fact you will massively shorten the drives lifespan.

Mike if you are going to move to SSD then I wouldn't bother buying OandO and conducting all your tests.Apparently defragging shouldnt be carried out on SSDs as it can damage them (So I've read)Graham

Read this: http://forums1.avsim.net/index.php?showtopic=273128Read this. Make sure to go into the options of the program, and set FSX at the top of the "High Performance" list. This will place FSX on the outer most tracks no matter it its modified or not. Next make sure to defrag by File/Folder name and hit "options" and select "respect high performance".I use the free version to do this, and I HIGHLY recommend you read the manual...and about the Solid State Drives (SSD), do NOT use a hard disk drive defragmenter to defragment a SSD or else you can do some damage to performance, and you can kiss your read/write cycles goodbye. Only use defragmenters specified for use with an SSD to defragment and read reviews about it to make sure its good.Good Luck! :(

If you try to fefrag an SSD partition with O&O it will shoot up a large warning window that you may dmage the disk is you continue.Just as well I absent mindedly selected one of my SSD partitions during a defrag fest. :(

Since I'm always looking for good software, I constantly check various utilities and tools, defraggers included. The last version of OO defrag has the promising feature of "zones" included - but it doesn't work since files which are defined to be kept in one zone only are spread across them, thus ignoring zone definitions and making the entire concept obsolete. In addition, OO very seldom has updates for their defragger. So, I keep sticking with PerfectDisk which isn't that flexible but works perfectly. The previes of DiskTrix coming Ultimate Defrag looks promising, but since none of the past versions was bug free and worked as it should, I don't expect much. The rest of the defrag programs is "a question mark" for me because there is not a single one that could convince me yet (Diskeeper et al.).Andreas

Hi,Well, I picked up an Intel X25-M SATA 160GB SSD (SSDSA2MH160G2R5). I figured I'd keep Windows 7 on my 10,000rpm Raptor and I'll place FSX and all my addons on the SSD.I wouldn't dream of defragging this drive with any HHD defraggers out there today. Now I just have to figure out how to set this up in my bios as well as Windows 7 64Bit, I want to make sure I have an OS that is SSD friendly.I think this now belongs in the hardware forum, so I'll move the remainder of this over to that forum. Thanks

ok, should i buy O&O 12? I really dont want to spend money. Do I continue to use O&O10 just with a different setting, because I have problems with OZX that I never had before.
The folks at O&O are pretty good. I'd contact them - at worst you'll get a discount on the newest version. I'm assuming you bought the original O&O 10.Vic

Windows 7 defrag is the best and it is free with the OS.jja
HelloDoes it do "name" defrag?

Also, for those who are about to reinvent the wheel and conduct various tests on O&O. It has already been done and reported by NickN - I do not have the link handy. It's is not ONLY about load times - some of the so caled defraggers leave gaping holes in the sectors. they report that they have defragged properly but it's not really the case, technically. O&O leaves a minimum amount of free space - especially if you follow NickN's suggestion of a name defrag followed by an offline defrag and a space defrag.Vic

the native windows defragger, including w7, is a POS. Free? You get what you pay for. Want proof? Google is your friend.Vic

It doesn't matter. I only use SSD drives now.jja
