Interesting Development over at CLS

Looks like there next project is a md-80 https://www.commerciallevel.com/index.php?id=16 let me know what you guys think? I have the coolsky and I'm satisfied with that, but If the cls vc is as good as the cls B747 and B767 done by model designer Jacob Kubique then I'm definitely buying it most likely will be a lite product which is not bad at all since we have 2 great md-80 packages out there but there complex ones.

Thanks for the heads up :( !

You'd have to go a very long way to get anywhere close to the complexity and sheer brilliance of Leonardo's Maddog 2008.With the new voice activated FS2Crew available, it is by far the best, most detailed, complicated, close to real life aircraft available for FS.Bar none!Neil

The more complex MD's are indeed very good, as indeed is the recent SS DC-9, but that's not the market CLS aims for, which is instead those who want a bit more than the default FS stuff, but not the time consuming complexity of the kind found in PMDG etc, so I don't think the current MDs, or that DC9 are really any direct competition, despite their fidelity.CLS's 'semi-lite' policy is a big target market, there are probably more simmers like that than there are hardcore types, so an MD aimed at such simmers will probably do more business than the complex offerings. I tend to like both complex and lite treatments in equal measure, since they both have their place. The MD is a good choice for CLS, since they'll probably make it just complex enough to be interesting and different, but not so fearsome that you need a real type rating to even start the engines, and since they have tended to concentrate on larger aircraft in recent years, an MD will add some nice variety to their product catalogue. Smart choice in my opinion.Al

I agree, this is a good choice by CLS, for the reasons you stated.Regards.Ernie.

I'm excited about this. Seems that after the Overland packages, it took a while for someone to develop some more quality lite short to medium haul products (with VC...). The QW757 was a welcome addition. And this looks like another winner to me!:(

Mike...

I wonder how you cannot be a Hardcore simmer and accept CLS lite products... :( See what happened to QW. There initial plan was for a light product and now, following the users demand, they (thanks god!) are moving towards a more detailed sim.Same thing for AirSimmer. Everyone is waiting for the advanced version...I don't see the market for jetliners without FMCs....My own opinion.RegardsGhiom

I can see the need for 'lite' aircraft but was a little put off with CLS's decision to bring us another 767. I ended up being wrong because for long haul trips it's nice to accelerate time in the sim for those of us with little time. I found myself enjoying the CLS 767 or should I say using it more than I did my Level-D 767. For starters you don't have to enter in every single waypoint in the FMC which is cumbersome on long haul flights and not how it's done in the real world. In the real world you upload an already made flight plan much like many add-ons today allow with default FS flight plans. Another thing that tops Level-D is the flight deck in the CLS model, it just looks so much better. Night lighting is lacking a little on the CLS model but it's a fun bird just the same. I updated the sounds to give the add-on a more Level-D feel which works out well. So for long haul especially with the way CLS is designing their VC's these days is really a joy to operate. The FDE's are spot on so flying the bird doesn't feel like your operating a 'lite' add-on. I will say this much, I'll have to pass on an MD-80 from CLS (if it were a 717 I'd go for it). The Leonardo MD-80 is complex and that's what that aircraft is all about (you really can't 'nicen' it up once it's been brought to FS properly which is now the case). Since it has been brought to us in all it's glory going back to something lesser doesn't feel right. You put that on top of the fact I can accelerate time with it for those days I don't have much time and the choice is clear. Again the only reason I go 'lite' is the ability to get into the aircraft and get from point A to B in record time (a.k.a in sim acceleration). I don't mind complexity if I'm able to do that. The Leonardo MD-80 is a hard act to follow and in my book is the best hardcore aircraft add-on ever to be released for FS. I would have rather CLS (I know I'm saying it again) brought us an updated A300/310 but they seem to be dodging that idea like the plague. It seems we'd have a better chance getting Imaginesim to redo their KEWR effort (which seems equally impossible)...

You do know there is the Simcheck A300B4-200 don't you? (FSX though, but most definitely not a 'lite' simulation of it) I'm currently in the process of reviewing it for Avsim and will probably be submitting that in a week or two, so look out for that if you are in the market for an A300.Al

Al,I am looking forward to your review of the Simcheck A300B4-200. I have it after the long wait but have not done anything significant with it yet. I am also taking my time to get familiar with the Leonardo Maddog. Without a doubt these are some serious flightsim packages. I still might get CLS A310/300 package as a balance.Keith

Nothing wrong with having both a lite and a full on version of the same airliner, be it an MD or an Airbus. I personally think the CLS B747 is one of the nicest add-ons there is for FS, and I've got pretty much every fancy hard core airliner you can get, naturally including the PMDG 747-400, which is of course excellent, but the CLS 747 tends to get more flights out of me simply because it is easier to jump into when time is short, since 747 flights tend to be long affairs as a rule.I certainly do enjoy learning all the complexities of the really heavy simulations, but I don't always want to fly like that in FS, and I daresay I'm not alone in that. The popularity of the latest PMDG turboprop, Flight 1's ATR, and other short haul stuff is indicative that people are sometimes pushed for time when it comes to simming, and that's why many of even the fairly hard core simmers have a place in their heart for the jets you can just jump into, since it makes longer trips more viable time-wise. You can tell that's also why everyone wants a good 737 and a good A320; they're both airliners you can make a short hop in, and the MD is in that category too. With a lite and a heavy version of the MD to choose from, simmers will have an option as to how involved they want to get, and I reckon that a lite MD will shift a lot of copies, especially given that the really complex MDs will have put many people off buying them. Some really hard core types might scoff at what CLS does, but for those simmers who want something better than the default aircraft, but without having to practically learn how to be a fully qualified commercial pilot, they fill a niche quite nicely, and it is as well to remember that if it was only hard core types that were catered for, FS would have probably died out well before FSX came out.Al

Again, for me flying an airliner without an FMC is impossible...RegardsGhiom

Why do you mention that? The CLS 747 I have does have an FMC, and I presume their MD will have one too.Al

I don't have FSX installed... We need something for FS9, I know FSX is covered for the most part.

The CLS 767 has an FMC as well. No you can't do all the intricate programming of it but just the same it shows the flight plan which is all I need and the route is displayed on the lower ND screen. That's more than I thought would be there so I'm satisfied in that department. I'm sure the CLS MD will have a similar setup.
