March 21, 201016 yr Not sure if its been mentioned but I recently picked up Newport's Maui & Molokai VFR scenery's with hope to one day complete the Hawaiian island chain and they are both really well done! Take a look: http://www.newportscenery.com/catalog/ John
March 21, 201016 yr I'd really like to see more reviews of the Newport products. I have really been considering their VFR Cozumel. MSFS Premium Deluxe Edition; Windows 11 Pro, I9-9900k; Asus Maximus XI Hero; Asus TUF RTX3080TI; 32GB G.Skill Ripjaw DDR4 3600; 2X Samsung 1TB 970EVO; NZXT Kraken X63; Seasonic Prime PX-1000, LG 48" C1 Series OLED, Honeycomb Yoke & TQ, CH Rudder Pedals, Logitech G13 Gamepad
March 21, 201016 yr Author I agree.Judging from the VFR Cozumel screen shots the textures look really washed out so I stayed away from it. I do have their Boise and Albuquerque scenery and both are pretty good, and fit in well with Sim Savvy. John
March 21, 201016 yr Hi,I use the scenery Hawaii Oahu by MegaScenery (http://www.megascenery.com/MegaSceneryXHawaii.htm). IMO a very good scenery with autogen. Some pictures (Click an a thumbnail to get a higher resolution. Click again on image to get full resolution):
March 21, 201016 yr Yes, the Megascenery is one of the best VFR sceneries for FSX.Unfortunately, Newport's Maui & Molokai VFR are really not the same quality.Very poor textures, nonexistent autogen, bad resolution.Nothing to compare.Sadly, I won't recommand them unless they'd be upgraded. Who knows? Is Megascenery different from Megascenery Earth? I bought a tile of MSE for Volusia county, Florida, and thought it was pretty awful. It looked as though they did nothing except take flat Google earth images and paste them onto the mesh. The autogen buildings on top of that looked ridiculous. GEX+UTX+FSGenesis was far, far better. I'm not sure about the Newport stuff, never tried it, but I was skeptical when the video only surveyed the coastlines. I kept waiting for them to go inland so I could see the city area, and they never did. i7-920 @ 3.2ghz | 6GB OCZ DDR3 @ 1600 mhz | GTX 580 1.5 GB | 1TB WD; 750GB WD | X-Fi Audio | 24" Dell LCD | X52 Flight Controller | REX-GEX-UTX-FTX

Who knows?Being fairly new to photo scenery MegaX's Hawaii was my first and I really enjoy it especially with FSD's PHNL. I will say I like Newports colors a lot better, MS just doesn't look as vibrant. I'm not sure what you mean by "nonexistent autogen, bad resolution" For me the 'photo' is very crisp and details are easily picked out or do you mean monitor resolution? As for Auto-Gen I was under the impression from MS's guide that it should be turned way down or off, I do have mine at normal and the airports and its buildings line up perfectly in the Newport scenery, the trees however do not. I do have some MSE scenery where the airports are horrible with taxi ways and buildings clearly misplaced and sitting next to the photo instead of on top. So for AG is this what I should be looking at or is it the trees and cities? I would post some screens but I use TH2Go and they are enormous when viewed on a single monitor :( and resizing makes them just about useless. John
March 23, 201016 yr Commercial Member Hi Guys, I am currently assembling my own complete Hawaiian Island scenery, I too have both of Newports offerings as well as Megascenery Oahu and also the beta of FSDreamscapes Oahu ( which has better textures than Megascenry, but no water masking....) I must say, I thought the Newport stuff was pretty good - what you have to remember is that there is no really good source imagery available for the islands. I am making my own scenery for the other islands at the moment, I will post some photos, but the problem is that there is cloud coverage on every island in places, in all imagery either from google, yahoo or bing. This means less than perfect results. Its good in places, sometimes even excellent, but less good in others. And thats the limitation. And the cost in manhours in editting, altering and recolouring the imagery would be far outweighed by the finacial return - after all, one small island in the middle of the pacific is hardly going to be selling thousands.....cheers, Mark

I'm not surprised at the difficulty in finding unobstructed source imagery, considering, for example, that the Alakai Swamp in the highlands of Kauai is one of the wettest places on the planet! March 23, 201016 yr It's a shame, because high quality scenery of the entire Hawaiian and Leeward Islands chain has always been very near the top of my "wanted" list. March 24, 201016 yr Commercial Member Hi David, maybe you have a different product, Here are some shots of the Newport Maui & Molokai products, I dont know about you, but I dont think scenery in FSX looks much better than this: .......Cheers, Mark
March 24, 201016 yr You may want to try out the freeware autogen scenery for Oahu (There are three distinct scenery) if you have Megascenery O'ahu. July 12, 201015 yr I just installed the Newport Maui scenery, despite some of the reviews. I found it to be very good. Since it is based on photography, you'll find some low level fog over a section of Kahului and other places. The info that came with the program indicated that it is best viewed at 3,000 feet. Try a flight over Mt. Haleakula, especially at sunrise. Incredible!! All the buildings, trails, science complex are there and the actual crater is perfect. Lahaina is also incredible. Perhaps there will be photo updates later, but right now it is as good as it can get. Also recommend the Landclass North America program. I'm running an i7 in the motherboard and can max all the settings, so this could be a factor in why it runs and looks so realistic. I've spent a lot of time in Maui and flown over the islands frequently, and the Newport Maui program is excellent.
