PMDG's pricing

Featured Replies

Well, there you go. Of course, whether a PMDG add-on is priced at ten pence, or ten grand, it is entirely up to the purchaser whether they think the game is worth the candle. So it is entirely up to PMDG to set their price based on the balance between making a decent profit and catching potential customers, they don't owe anyone anything with regard to how they go about doing that. What is not in doubt is that PMDG pushes the envelope every time they bang something out, and for that kind of cutting edge work, one should not be surprised to pay a premium. I imagine there would be plenty of people who would not gripe too much at handing over 200 bucks for their new FSX NG when it comes out, and PMDG would doubtless be happy to have that kind of cash rolling in, but they'll probably go with something nearer 120 to cast their net wider, because any company that is smart enough to develop a realistic 737NG sim, is unlikely to need lessons on how to set a price in a pragmatic fashion.Al

I just looked at their site. I'm surprised. I really didn't think the price would have increased with time. I suppose that's what demand does to a market. And, (I know, shouldn't start a sentence with a conjunction...), I suppose that's what a reputation for quality does to demand.Their stuff really does look very good. Wish I had a better PC... and salary (really I'm broke, not tight fisted!). I've a birthday coming up- I'll have to lean on the relatives. :( Regards,D

Actually, that's an old school grammatical fallacy; it is perfectly acceptable to start a sentence with a conjunction. You can in fact find examples of that as far back as the King James version of the Bible. The only reason not to, is when writing copy that is likely to be read by older people who were erroneously taught that it is incorrect to do so, since it risks alienating such a readership, and it is of course a basic rule of writing that you should use the grammatical structure your potential readers will be happiest with, which is also why we are starting to see 'text speak' show up in reviews of computer games and on the 'net. The reason children used to be taught not to start sentences with conjunctions, is that it demands quite clever structuring to make it work well, so it was simply more pragmatic to tell them not to do it. It is a similar methodology to how children were taught to throw in adjectives to make their writing more descriptive, which is something that real estate blurb writers seem to have embraced with particular verve. Can you tell I am a copywriter who runs a writing course LOL? (see that? I used 'LOL' there, which means I must be...erm, sick, probably)Al

I love real estate blurb. I think my favourites are 'fully detached' and 'very unique'. This is the first time I've seen net with an apostrophe.Favourite word at the mo' is surely 'lollage', which is what a lot of this thread caused.I'd better go back to work now- the boss is watching...

If you think that is bad, I once received a press release for some fancy city centre loft apartments in Manchester, which described the refrigerators in their fitted kitchens as, 'the very personification of style'.Al

No dispute about the English, but for some of us the rest is simply the biggest pile of superstitious nonsense ever. On a more important point though, perhaps we should keep off the subject of religion - this is an FS forum after all. I'm sure many of us come here to escape the daily misery caused by religion and politics.

Thank you for your reaction, Gavin and David.I was just going to write something like 'Oh no, the last religion-free forum to be lost' :( As for the PMDG's pricing issue I think it will naturally die when iFly is released (and maybe another developer we don't know about yet will come out).Competition means choice and that is how it should be.

It was an example of the English language. You don't have to believe it to appreciate the quality of the language.

That is true, but could you not have chosen something less controversial for a flightsim forum? Shakespeare, Dickens, Hardy, etc for example. Not many murders have been committed in their name, if you see my point. I think it's generally accepted in this type of forum that we keep our religious/political views to ourselves. Perhaps on reflection I was mistaken in presuming that your post had a religious message, but when I first read it it did seem that way.

Agreed. Personally, I'm no fan of religion, but I can still look at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and appreciate the majesty of Michelangelo's painting. And ironically enough there can't be many pilots (even agnostic ones) who haven't burst up through an overcast into brilliant sunshine and a floor of blindingly white clouds and immediately thought: God almighty, that's beautiful!Al

I chose those words because they are, possibly, the most quoted example of beginning sentences with a conjunction. - 9 sentences, 7 of which begin with and. Can you find an equivalent in Shakespeare, Dickens or Hardy?

That's a fair point. Regarding Shakespeare, Dickens, Hardy, etc - off the top of my head, I don't know. Actually I'm a little surprised the question of using 'and' arose at all. Most of us will have read something like 'John shouted at Jane blah, blah, blah. And with that Jane ...........'

Oh yes indeed. I've just come back from walking around Krakow's beautiful Mariacka. Wonderful, I don't know why I don't come down here more often. I've even heard religious pilots exclaim ........ me gently, that's beautiful! :(Oh and by the way, I can't see anything wrong with PMDG's pricing policy. It's up to them as far as I'm concerned. The 2 PMDG products I've purchased, the B744 & MD-11 for FS9 have provided me with hours of entertainment and, in my opinion, are good value for money.
