My Sandy Bridge Experience

Featured Replies

I just had the same experience (only in reverse) and the Noctua overhung the memory slots and I couldn't put my memory fans on. I then went to a H70 water bottle which allowed me to put on the memory fans. I guess I'll use the Noctua as an anchor or something.
interesting. I still have time to figure out what I want. But based on my temps, combined with some other reviews of the H70, I am probably going to look away from it.

Hey guys. Had a quick question. I'm considering switching out my H70 when the MOBO replacement is available. I feel it's not doing the job properly. I'm thinking of getting the Noctua NH-D14. Here is my concern. Will it be able to fit considering the heat sink on my Mushkin ram? Thanks guys.
They will fit: http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=compatibility_ram_gen&products_id=34&lng=en

Since memory sits upstream of the LARGE "wind tunnel" NH-D14, there is a large amount of cooling (air movement) taking place and the dedicated memory fan might not be essential depending on airflow in your box. My memory is running at 2005mhz without the dedicated memory fan AND with the top heat spreader/heat sink removed on one stick as Gary's link indicates. Also it is possible to relocate the interfering fan to the rear although I am not sure what effect this would have on overall cooling ability since it is not the "as designed" configuration and have not tried this personally. For my build, I chose the NH rather than the H70 since most reviews favored the NH. In my case, I use SSDs for their soundless (not to mention quickness) nature and the NH allows me to have an almost silent rig which for me is very important. Silent, killer cooling, no maintenance and no leak worries.

John,What type of temperature difference did you see when you switched from the NH-D14 to the H70? Did you have a chance to test them both on the same system?

I'm thinking if you want to switch from one to the other for the purpose of better cooling, you're much better off going with something like a Rasa 240 kit. Whereas there might be a 1 or 2 degree difference between the h70 and NH-D14 in a closed case, you're looking at something like a 10 degree drop with the Rasa kit (assuming a full on watercooling kit doesn't intimidate you). Honestly, I think if you want to run 5+ GHz 24/7, a full-on watercooling kit is almost necessary, especially with the new AVX instruction set. These chips do run a little warmer than all the pre-release hype claims.

No, I don't have results from NH-D14. When I realised I couldn't use memory fans and the fact that the NH looked to be higher than the my case width I switched to the H70. The only result I have from the H70 were using stock clocks and the core temp was 39°C. Due to other problems my new mobo has been replaced with my old one until the replacement mobos are available in April. (I did however take a System drive backup with the new drivers on board which will ease the transfer back to a new board when they become available). BTW I run my current I7 @ 4.16GHZ using Intel stock cooler without problem and I have smooth FSX so the new board was more of a "Suck it and see" exercise" rather than "Got to have one" to improve FSX performance. This forum topic has been very interesting.

I don't know if there's a factor that's causing this or is Sandy Bridge really that much better than Lynnfield, but I've just done a quick test around KJFK in the PMDG MD-11 and I'm getting almost double the FPS I used to get. Overclocked to 4.6GHz, with vCore 1.32v and RAM at 1866MHz CL9. It looks like I could probably lower vCore by a notch or two, but that's fine tuning - this was just a crude test :)

@IvanK, The double performance could be true - but what exactly did you have before?

Hi,May I ask you how many FPS u get and which add ons u use? I have FSDT KJFK, UTX, GEX, REX, Aerosoft Manhattan and UT2 with 70% AI and 80% GA and get 22 FPS with the MD11. ThanksregardsPatrick

So,finally I've got some time to test my SB deeper. In most areas SB kicks FSX in the A... Thats a fact! But at some well known hot spots, like ORBX NA blue (KSEA) (not the default FSX scenery), or KJFK, FSX makes it even hard for SB. In these hot spots It is more smooth than with my "old" 980x, but not completely fluid. Of cores, if you don't use a demanding aircraft like PMDG's 747 or heavy sceneries, then you get smoothness everywhere. It really depends on which add ons are installed and how all the settings are tweaked. I also watched some youtube videos but most of them was either made without cockpit view (of cores they are more smooth) or with less autogen.Have to test some more if my time allows me that.happy flyingPatrick

Thank you for that Patrick,That is pretty much how I would explain the SB dominance over FSX too. Last night I ran various payware aircraft out of KPDX and ORBX's Twin Oakes in order to fly around, through, above and between their new Portland freeware. I tried to make it as difficult as I could, and very nearly succeeded in creating FSX obstacles that would bother it, but not quite.FPS averaged between 20 and 25, with a low momentary drop to around 16 or 17 when over the worst and most complex renderings. I don't think a computer could have been setup with any more demanding settings than that. Now, FPS numbers do not tell the whole story in this sample. It was still smooth, not perfect, but no stutters, popping or chugging.Because I am now used to fantastic FSX performance with this machine, I could notice that it was working hard at close to it's edge, but still, despite everything, rendered it all quite smoothly without obvious hesitations. However when you are used to 40+ FPS all the time you notice the difference between 20ish and 40ish, but perhaps others with non SB machines would have found it a bit harder to isolate.Sandy Bridge is not the answer to machines that are weak in their GPU, RAM or other operational hardware. Performance will always drop to the lowest common denominator and the weakest point will prove to be the strongest deterrant. However, I now think Sandy Bridge is significantly better than any other system for FSX bar none, with a respectible and compelling edge over even the 980X, as multiple testimonies now attest.Ram at 1600 MHz with timings between 7 and 9 cas seem to pull off these high numbers almost indistinguishably from those with ultra high and very expensive memory.Kind regards,

I was getting around 28-30FPS when flying around FSDT KJFK with PMDG MD11 in heavy cloudy weather now I get about 40-45FPS in similar situations, and it's visibly smoother. My performance in San Francisco (with Aerosoft Mega city or whatever it's called) didn't improve overall because I still have a slow magnetic HDD to load scenery from, but in between scenery loads FPS goes up to 40-50 as well. I tried overclocking to 4.8GHz (1.33v vCore) but that didn't improve performance much. Please note - my sim is more optimized for smooth operation, so I don't have stuff like traffic turned on, because it adds very little to improve the sim experience but reduces the smoothness considerably.

Funny enough. Another happy camper here...I finally have my sim up and running, 2600k @ 4.8, 8gb 1866 ram, evga sc gtx 580 @890, crucial ssd’s.All I can say is wowI came from a [email protected], 285 ocx.Overall the sim flies sooo much better. My lowest point fps test point, all fully maxed was, 13fps on the 920, now 22 same spot and conditions. The sim looks better (could be the 580) helping or a combo of both) but files so much better. Completely happy with it now. Will post more soon. SSD's sata 3.0 are the way to go too.Simon

I'll my post my thoughts here:Coming from an E8400 @ 3.6GHz, my minimum framerates are double using the I5 2500k at default speeds.Furthermore, the cpu speed scales nicely with FSX, so you can imagine what I'm getting at 5ghz.Informal observations: GTX275 @ 1680x1050, FS Dreamteam's JFK, WOAI traffic at 100% (all major carriers used), Rex @HD and the PMDG MD11E8400 @ 3.6GHz min 10I5 @ 5.0GHz min20+ <-----even with a full screen FRAPs captureI'm using the Asus P8p67 Deluxe, Corsair 1600 mem 8 gigs(2 sticks) 8cas 1.5v with the GTX275.System setup (5ghz) using this guide http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1578110

Hmm; I am not one of the lucky ones with this gig ud4frown.gifStable in prime, occt, linx for hours. 4.8 1.39 stable temps 60 load. Great once i am in windows. 2600k ht off. Works like a charm in wondows, not lock-ups bsod etc. Fsx like a dream:))Issue that has been there from the start; is cold boot issues. All bios from the 6's, 7b etc, to 8b, etc it is there. If I leave my pc for a day, turn it on it hangs on cold boot up and I have to open the case put the jumper on and clear cmos; re-load my profile and boot up and it is fine. It is an absolute pain in the a__!I am only using intel sata 3.0 slots, memory is 1866 1.60v, cls 9 and passes memtest. I have heard asus has had the issues, but fixed them; looks like others have had issues with six series gig boards too...looks like the dual bios is too sensitve? This needs fixing...

Did you flash both bios to the same version by hitting F12 at post and overwritting backup bios? Not sure the UD4 has a dual bios or not?
