I don't mind that Open Clouds is payware now, but a subscription? I'll never use it again.

The dev can do what he likes with the software but for me, who spends approx 50% of my FS time testing and helping the community gratis, I can do without it. It was nice while it lasted but it won't be missed in my flying, I'll just go back to saving weather that I create that does much the same thing, it won't be as dynamic but that's OK.

Same for me. I think I might have purchased Open Clouds if it was a one time purchase, but a subscription? No way. Why a subscription? A nice way to easily raise money? Or am I missing something here?Jean-Jacques

There can't be many examples of subscrition based software, WOW being one example of such a product. In the case of WOW it's a global game, and thats the main reason this subscription method is tolerated, but no disrepect to the developer Open Clouds is not exactly a revolutionary product and it has to compete with ASE for example which is a one time purchase. From reading the comments on this forum and others it's clear this will not be a welcome method of purchase, and it would not surprise me to see the subscription idea dropped pretty soon.In my opinion the developer/publisher has completely misjudged their potential market.

Subscriptions for products which change little always put me off. For MMOs the subscriptions are dependent on new content always coming along, so there is a perceived value in them and I an easily accept that there may as a result of that, be a need for ongoing support. The reason for a subscription that was given for Open Clouds, was the cost of providing support long term, but I don't think that stands up to close scrutiny myself, since even if new features show up, I imagine that the only time most people would request support, is upon installation or when getting the thing up and running, and you would think an initial purchase price would cover that, and thereafter people would know how it worked. Anything beyond that could simply be covered in a version number's documentation if it involved anything that warranted a new understanding of features.I don't expect everyone will agree with my point of view of course, but I bet there are a lot of people out there who will. Of course someone deserves to be rewarded for their efforts, so I don't begrudge anyone a one off fee, but I think that does the job most of the time.Al

HelloFor a weather program there will possibly be the costs of running the server unless the App just D/L from existing sources, which for a payware program is a bit cheeky IMHO

been one of the first users to use it and test it for Dave..I have no problem that he went payware... It was the way he did it. At least FSrealWX already hints about it and there are ample notice and nobody is under any illusion that it it is going to be freeware for ever.. but to do it like Dave is really bad business changing it without notice.Would have still consider it once off payment, but definitely no subscriptionfor me. So back to ASA, rather wait a couple seconds longer to get my weather.. at least it has been paid for already.

And ASE is a free upgrade for ASA owners, if they wish.

It was freeware and those who who used it had the benefits of it for nothing. Now it's payware what have you lost? The answer is again nothing because you never paid for anyrhing. If you still want it then you can pay for it, otherwise you don't. The complaints about how it was done are irrelevant. Anyway I suspect however it was done the freeloaders here would have whined.

Greetings from the country where people sometimes wonder, sometimes suggest things and never blame others of "whining" or posting "irrelevant" things, mgh. :smile:Seems like this place is far, far away from your site which surely has its beauty too. :(

I assume that means you can't answer my points. As for whining, the orignal OP said:
I got a message, that I have to pay for a license key to have it working. That´s really bad and I think it´s somehow evil from the developer to release it as freeware at first and when enough users enjoy this superb thing, he decides to make us pay for it.

Guess it depends upon what the EULA says, correct? If I download a freeware product (I might have this on the HD somewhere), with an EULA that says it's free to use and I then have an update forced on me that takes that free usage away? Sounds like something I could complain about. EULAs work both ways. I may check to see if I have the dated installer and see what the EULA says.Is it enough for me to start losing sleep over? Nah, it's just a game.

In the USA and the UK and other common law countries a freeware EULA isn't binding by its very nature. You still haven't lost anything.

I might not have lost anything but Dave has lost my respect for him due to his cunningness of forcing this without prior notice..So I am honest to say that even if he brought about an FSX addon that revolutionize FSX, I will not be part of his endeavers in future. Rather go with more reputable companies..

If you haven't lost anything why are you whining about "cunningness"?How did he force this - by sending round people round with big sticks to make you pay? What difference would it have made if more notice had been given? While Open Clouds was freeware you had free use of it. Now it isn't you have a simple choice of either paying to continue to use it or not paying and not using it.
