If Flight were released tomorrow?

Featured Replies

So far, in my mind I am completely neutral on the new Flight. I think this will be an interesting topic because so many of us have so much invested in FSX and in my mind all of the great weather, scenery (ORBX, GEX and on and on)and many great aircraft are going to be hard for MS to beat out of the box. I have reached the point with my older equipment, I have a very nice flight sim experience. I know for sure something pretty exciting will have to come to light before I take the leap again or at least right away. Don't get me wrong, I still love jumping off the cliff but the sudden stops have taken a toll on me over the years. LOLSo what features will MS have to offer tonight to get your order tomorrow or next payday?? Or for those with the glass half empty, what would be the deal breakers?

If it were released tomorrow I would go get some gasoline in my beat-up pickup and start hitting all the Best Buy or Frys store looking for a copy. Just like I did with FSX.I'd load Flight and head off to Hawai'i for some cruising, Aloha style! :( Then I'd load the SDKs (Note to MS: There better be SDKs!) and start to learn what I could do to make it better, for me and others.a really excited user? No, not really. FSX and Flight will keep me busy and hopefully out of trouble...

There will definitely be a new SDK, since MS were looking for a developer who specialises in building SDK's (its on this forum somewhere, search if you like rolleyes.gif )And what would I do if it were released tomorrow? Well. I would maybe ask to stay off school because my dream job is to become a commercial since flying planes means so much to me. I'd love for Flight to come out tomorrow, but not in its current state, although it looks great... its still not finished. I'd rather wait till it is complete. There are a few things I would want to come standard with Flight before I can really enjoy it, so much so that Its almost as thrilling as flying for real! *btw, when using the term 'game' it is an umbrella term, it also includes simulation and racing games, and everything in-between. Do not twist my words.

"A video game is an electronic form of play that involves interaction with a user interface to generate visual feedback on a video device" - the definition of the word "videogame", game is the common shorthand for videogame. Just being clear.

Jamie...stay with that Dream of yours. I am not sure how old you are but I suspect that not to far in the future all aircraft will be flown using something very much like the xbox controler. You must work hard because I am pretty sure you will have to be the Pilot in Command to get pink butterflies!!

I agree 100%. As a flight sim/aviation enthusiast I have bought almost every flight sim made by anyone since 1981. Some I have used quite extensively and some I have discarded almost immediately, but for typically the price of a single meal for my family at a restaurant not only is a flight sim a bargain, but I also want to support whoever takes the chance on making one.It would be an awfully boring world if everyone decided making a flight sims was not worth the effort, and it has gotten pretty close to that. I'd rather support them all, and continue the hobby.

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

Well, I just got FSX, so naturally I'd want to wait a bit on Flight. I guess I'd wait until the first or second patch (depending on when they're released), or jump on a good deal if it materializes at some point.

I don't mean to be rude but you sort of need to lower your expectations. Flight isn't made to appeal to a hardcore simmer. The Flight development team are not going to provide us with all that we want. [as in super realistic AC, Weather engine, volumetric clouds, etc etc]As long as they can give us a nice SDK packed with development tools for teams like REX, PMDG, GEX, ORBX, and so on, then I will be very pleased. I just want a sim that is easy to build on (UNLIKE FSX). I expect to find a "game/sim" with semi-realistic aircraft and nice looking scenery but still running on the same source code of FSX, just patched and cleaned up.--nothing more and nothing less. Nothing more and nothing less. Kind Regards,

+1 .. plus the investment is only 60$ (dinner at Olive Garden).

LOL...In the end, I will probably jump in the cool-aid line with everyone else. LOL!! This whole thing just seems a little different than past releases. I am not an MS hater in the least but it is hard to trust them after some of the fake pic's ect. that came out before FSX. LOL I still laugh out loud when I think about the post where the op was screaming "THERE ARE NO GOD RAYS!! THEY PROMISED US GOD RAYS!!" That my friend was a guy who needs to discover fishing.... :(

You are correct Geofa, most of the crowd will of course buy the thing and I will too. I was hopeing to get more serious replies about what folks really expect. Yes sir many of us probably drop 60 in tips on a regular bases. I was wanting to get away from the dreams and wishes and hear more about what the vets with real expectations are looking for in this release. Didn't mean to put you in a tailspin!! :(

Flight is not aimed at just the casual simmer. Microsoft has said this many times. Also, it is not being built off of FSX. It's being built from the ground up, but using pieces of code from FSX where it is the obvious choice. (from PC Pilot magazine article)I think that all the bullet points that Jamie starred are pretty realistic, as we have either been given proof that they are likely to happen, of they are just something you would expect, since it's been 5 years since a new version of FS has been released.

Didn't know I was in a tailspin but this is what I expect. Those with "expectations" will be disappointed as one's personal wishes and expectations for a sim will never be met-we are too diverse a crowd. Expectations to me translate into-I have my own personal agenda and wishes for a sim and if it does not contain those wishes/expectations to the "t" I will be severly disapointed .The sim will have many improvements, but not the improvements that everyone wants. It will have features that will be overlooked by many, and flaws that will be flaunted by many. Many "serious" simmers will be disappointed -though the definition of "serious" is really the same as "expectations".There will be much angst expressed in these forums, and those that actually find the sim useful or interesting will be labelled "a really excited user" and those that don't will stick to whatever they are using-be it fsx or fs9 and will proudly boast that they will not switch. For those old enough to remember the picture below:There will be the cries of beta testers (either they did not do their job or we all being used as beta testers). Again-been around simming since 1981-the cycle is hardly surprising anymore.:(

WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!

Clearly, the prudent thing would be not to buy Flight tomorrow or on its release date whenever that is.It's not about the money. It is about knowing what I am getting and IF I want to support the company and the product after I do have a clue about what I am getting.I certainly would not want to support another mediocre quality product, nor a direction of development that would reduce my enjoyment below the level I currently have with FSX.We reward lying politicians by electing them for we believe their promises, the bigger the lie, the more people believe it. We reward game developers based on past performance, even after they have made whole sale changes to the development team that brought us the previous version. Then we find out about the lies, but it's too late.If we get another FSX-like quality product in Flight, it will be because of rewarding MS by buying FSX on day one. They got away with it once, they may try it again. I swore off the day one buying after seeing Civ V and some of the Total War disasters.

  • Moderator

I wont buy it the day it's available in stores.Instead I will wait and read all the good and back feedback and examine all the screen shots and videos that consumers post here on Avsim and elsewhere.Even if it performs exceptional well out of the box, the whole decision for me to purchase it will come down to the availability of addons for it. No addons=no purchase. In otherwords, it can look like the best sim ever, but until I have either a PMDG or LDS a/c to fly in it, it would be a worthless purchase for me. I might be able to cope with the default airports, both the extra detailed ones and the non-detailed ones since they looks a bit better in the preview shots, but I can not cope with flying a default 737 or any of the default airliners.I didn't purchase FSX the day it was released due to the same reasons, in fact, even though I waited on my FSX purchase, I think I got in a little more prematurely than I should have because there still weren't enough addon sceneries to really make me happy compared to what FS9 had available for it. Unless there is some backward compatibility or the 3PD's can port their existing addons to work in Flight very quickly, I will probably be waiting at least a year or more before making my Flight purchase.
