July 6, 201114 yr Holy dust storm Batman!!! Fill us in Tabs! How was the haboob last night in PHX? Do REX or any of the other FS environment add-ons allow for haboobs? That would be awsome to fly into one coming down for an ILS to minimums!Hiram Hunt

July 6, 201114 yr From a Phoenician, the haboob was incredibly different. Which reminds me, I need to change my location. Kenny Lee"Keep climbing"

July 6, 201114 yr
I saw on the news a plane going into the storm!! can a plane fly in a sand storm?

Not sure. I know you can't fly through volcanic ash. But maybe you can and just need a new paint job. Kenny Lee"Keep climbing"
July 6, 201114 yr The issue with flying into a sandstorm or an ash cloud is what it does to the engines. Nothing good. July 6, 201114 yr Commercial Member Flying into a sandstorm is like flying into a sand blaster.Europe are idiots for allowing air transport to fly in known areas of volcanic ash. Sure, the engine may not fail on that flight, but you're setting the aircraft up for big problems later. They are doing a fine job of destroying any gains made in reliability.Best regards,Robin.

Some airlines (including non-europe or should I say non-idiots airlines) complained quite harsh about the EU being to hard with their actions. And as far as I know in the end it is the pilots/airlines decision to fly on that day wether the airports are open or not.I do hate (I know it is a strong word) this generalizing over the citizens of a whole town/country/continent or other groups of people!Greetings Stefan Rakel

July 6, 201114 yr Commercial Member I do hate (I know it is a strong word) this generalizing over the citizens of a whole town/country/continent or other groups of people!Don't blame me - I don't want a "Europe" or to be any part of it but a bunch of people called politicians are deciding that for me. :( Europe ARE idiots (and I'm sure you are smart enough to know exactly which Europeans I am referring to without thinking I'm referring to all 550 million people???) for thinking you can safely fly through anything resembling sand paper at 500 kts with very precisely built equipment without any repercussions later.Just ask NASA what they think of the idea. They flew a fully equipped 707 through ash, and they had detectors built for the purpose that told them the air they were flying through was clear. A borescope inspection later found they'd destroyed all 4 engines. They sat in Iceland waiting for spares. Needless to say when they flew back they gave the cloud an additional 500 mile clearance on top of the 500 miles they already gave it!Best regards,Robin.
July 6, 201114 yr Commercial Member I actually missed the main haboobing last night - didn't even realize it was happening until it'd already hit - my sister had been calling trying to tell me to go look outside, but my phone got thrown on silent somehow... I went out after and it looked like fog but it was dust in the air - pretty eerie. The videos and stuff are insane, it looks like something out of a disaster movie.Check this HD one out:http://vimeo.com/26045314KPHX was shut down for over an hour by this and then again a few hours later by monsoon thunderstorms. Pretty eventful start to monsoon season so far! Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com

July 6, 201114 yr Wow, it puts me in mind of the old dustbowl. Are those things fairly common?I've lived in Phoenix for 19 almost 20 years and I don't remember dust storms that big (50 miles wide and 3000 feet high I heard). But dust storms during the monsoon season can occur occasionally. Kenny Lee"Keep climbing"
