July 13, 201114 yr Gentlemen, I could need your advice. When I start FSX for the first time of the day, or when I added scenery, the first start of the program takes extremely long (up to 10 minutes). There are long periods when all my cores idle, FSX seems to hang, but it really doesn't - it just takes unbelievable amounts of time. Once the start screen is reached, it's fast again.I have seen that it takes very long to rebuild the scenery indexes (filelistIndex.dat in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX\SceneryIndexes). That's only in situations described here, the next start is pretty fast (from start to flying in app. a minute or so). I have a lot of sceneries installed (my scenery.cfg has more than 370 entries) - but my computer is fast and well equipped (i5 at 4.3Ghz, 8GB fast memory, everything on SSDs).Also, the scenery.cfg seems to be in perfect condition with no double entries or double layers. Any ideas why this could be and most of all - what to do against it?
July 13, 201114 yr 10 minutes really sounds too long, but of course the amount of scenery installed doesn't make things faster there. You can check the scenery influence on the initial loading times by going default only once of course. The initial loading is longer than the following ones, but not in that range as far as I can see, and not on such a decent system. For the rest, I'd use some process monitor (build in Windows or some freeware) to actually check which files are loaded and what the response time they give. Maybe that leads to some clue if we're talking about certain files (or types) or a module which triggers a first start delay with those 10 minute delays. If the disc itself is fine on copy actions (including tons of small files for example), at least the rough view on the subsystem gives an 'ok'. Easy to test item.I'd also go for the check of the items in the dll.xml and exe.xml. Disable them on by one or go default to see if those modules cause some severe delay.Hoping the best, darem. :(
July 13, 201114 yr You may try to add DisablePreload=1 to the [MAIN] section of the FSX.cfg if it's not already there. Although it didn't help me getting faster startup times per se, it did eliminate the long wait I had when the startup screen appeared; during that time I could barely select airports, aircraft and whatnot, since the FSX UI was constantly stalling. That addition to the FSX.cfg fixed that. it might help you get shorter startup times too, but I don't promise anything. July 13, 201114 yr Author DisablePreload=1 is activated in my fsx.cfg. What I find so intriguing is the fact that I have, for most of the time until the selection screen for flights in FSX comes up, I have 0% computer activity - as if FSX doesn't know what to do. It's not that it's working hard to load all stuff, it is sleeping. Suddenly, it wakes up and finishes the process.
July 13, 201114 yr Moderator Long shot Darem but double check that your AV is not scanning files on read or open. I had a similar issues, although not as bad as yours, and found that an update to my AV had reset some of the scan settings.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160

Any ideas why this could be and most of all - what to do against it?I agree with Berlopez - too many sceneries. 370 appears to be excessive. But! You state it takes a very long time to rebuild the scenery indexes when you start up FSX. Are you saying, everytime FSX starts up, you're getting the box telling you to wait as it's rebuilding the scenery indexes? That should only happen once - when you install a new scenery or there are changes to your default textures. Once it is completed and you install no more scenery, you should not see this box when you start up FSX. So, you most likely have a corrupt scenery.cfg. Check out the working version of scenery.cfg in the C:/Program Data/Microsoft/FSX folder (you state you have done this already). But, again check the Areas/Layers and make sure they are in numerical sequence and there are no duplicate entries. Make sure the Areas/Layers number is the same for each scenery. Once you have corrected any issue, save the file and try again. FSX startup will again show the scenery indexes screen as you modified the scenery.cfg but it should not show the scenery indexes screen the next time you start FSX. To test my theory of a corrupt scenery.cfg, you can rename the working scenery.cfg to scenery.old in the C:/Program Data folder as above. Then go to the folder where your FSX.cfg is located and copy the scenery.cfg in that folder to the Program Data folder (make sure you do not move it from the FSX.cfg folder. It's needed there for some reason), restart FSX (scenery indexes screen will show up as scenery.cfg was modified), then close FSX and restart it. If the scenery indexes screen does not pop up, there is something wrong with your scenery.cfg with 370 entries as I described OR one of the 370 sceneries was not installed properly and, everytime you start up FSX, the bad scenery is trying to load something in the dll.xml and causing the scenery index screen to appear. The load time will be long until the scenery.cfg or the corrupt scenery is fixed. You might be able to find out what scenery is causing the problem by looking in the Event Viewer and see if a FSX module is having a tough time loading properly. Your only other recourse to to load each scenery to the new scenery.cfg until the problem is found. One of the first culprits I would look at is any AI program. Make sure it was properly installed. For instance, MyTrafficX - a great AI Program but you can add MyTrafficX to your scenery library (scenery.cfg) but you also have to add that entry into the FSX.cfg for the program to work properly. A lot of people will have FSX problems and delete the FSX.cfg, restart FSX, then let the config rebuild. Things are working properly again but they forget to add the MyTrafficX entry and the scenery.cfg sees the MyTrafficX folder but not the entry in FSX. That may or may not happen. I'm just thinking as I write and maybe it will give you some ideas on your own situation. I would think the bad scenery would be one of the sceneries identified in your scenery.cfg as 368, 369, or 370 (in other words a very recent addon).Best regards,Jim
July 14, 201114 yr Hi,Funny, I found this thread as I am having what seems to be the same issue. The splash screen stays up forever. The time has almost quadrupled. I am only using GEX/UTX as far as addon scenery although I do have some ORBX sceneries but without ORBX active.DisablePreload is active. I have been trying to figure out when this started happening. I did install TrackIR5 but not loading this has no affect on the length of time the splash screen is visible. Also, most of the time there is no disk access. I am really curious about this as I have had many clean installs in the past but never has this occurred previously.Edit: Also using MyTrafficWin7 64 bit, No antivirusBob Officially retired
July 14, 201114 yr Hi Darem,Get a great program called Addit Pro, then clieck Scenery then using the shift key select all of your scenery entries and click validate........see what happens from there, just a thought and long shot...cheers
July 15, 201114 yr It does sound really long. I just timed my system - 2:18. My scenery config is only around 250. FSX is on a dedicated VRaptor but I doubt it would go up to 10 min if I was at 350. It used to be at 70 seconds but I added a ton of AI causing it to go up. all those traffic.bgls can slow things down I guess. Do you have a dedicated drive for FSX (not sure if it makes a difference with SSDs)?Try deleting entries from you scenery.cfg (back up first, of course) and see if it speeds up.I can't remember the name of the utility but you can see what files FSX/Windows is calling up. I got rid of it because it created more questions than it answered but it may be useful to you in this situation. Someone must remember the utility - it was all the rage a couple years ago. July 15, 201114 yr As far as I can tell, it first scans the FSX folders then scans all add-on aircraft folders before getting to the initial load flight screen. On my system this takes about 3 minutes. After clicking on "Fly Now", it scans all of the scenery folders, presumably looking for scenery in the vicinity of the user aircraft. The progress bar stays at 6% and during this time, it is using only one core. Finally, it loads the scenery using cores 2, 3 and 4 and the progress bar increments to 100%.

But thanks for the idea, anyway.
July 15, 201114 yr Moderator I agree with Firehawk - save yourself time and trouble and do it one at a time.Make a backup of your scenery.cfg and then remove all but the default entries and test - repeat until you locate the scenery file(s) that may be clogging the load. There is no easy way. If you remove all but the default and it STILL takes forever to load then you really have an issue.Vic RIG#1 - I9 14900K MSI Pro z790 RTX 5070Ti 40" 4K Monitor 3840x2160

My rig takes about 10 minutes to load, not because of scenery but because I have a huge amount of custom AI. I take out the AI and it loads in under a minute.
July 15, 201114 yr Author That's the main section of my fsx.cfg:[Main]DisablePreload=1HideMenuFullscreen=1HideMenuNormal=0Location=440,131,1480,909,\\.\DISPLAY1Maximized=0SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\AirplanesSimObjectPaths.1=SimObjects\RotorcraftSimObjectPaths.2=SimObjects\GroundVehiclesSimObjectPaths.3=SimObjects\BoatsSimObjectPaths.4=SimObjects\AnimalsSimObjectPaths.5=SimObjects\MiscSimObjectPaths.6=SimObjects\UT2 AircraftUser Objects=Airplane, HelicopterProcSpeed=17142PerfBucket=7FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION=0.33So, it's only UT2 aircrafts. When I start FSX without it (after the first slow start!), loading time is 24 seconds. With it, it's 32 seconds until the selection screen. I can't imagine that's repsonsible for the first slow start.
