Forum signatures

Many people here may perceive this post as bashing or pointing fingers, but it's really not one. This has just makes me an increasing impression lately in the forum. Maybe I am spending too much time here waiting for the release.Guys, please have mercy on us with all these signatures. Without spelling names - why do we care how big is your hard drive and how much free space you have on it? I mean come on. The impression is that this is not aviation forum but one for maniac hardware-overclocking teens. If you gonna have a signature, why not put your hours and type ratings in it, or at least something relevant in the most concise representation possible? No one cares what your rig is, no matter how proud of it you are.Another thing is that when we read a topic, maybe half of the space is taken by the same signatures. We all do not post just once in a thread that is interesting to us, so you get the picture. It is really irritating (at least to me) to dodge all this spam in every thread just to navigate to the actual posts text.I even took the time to calculate the signature size of a fellow forumer here. It is 11304 bytes. He has one of those "future owner of the NGX" pictures and his PC rig in absurd detail. That's about 10 posts of pure text to say at least. Bear in mind that the full text of Romeo and Juliet is around 100k. Tom and AVSIM staff are kindly providing the servers and the bandwidth for free to us, so please be reasonable. More signatures = more strain on the database, http server, all internet infrastructure on the way, more RAM needed in your PCs, which is way equals more electricity, etc. And most importantly, more difficult to read the forums. You decide which is better.cheersIgnat

Sorry to say, but I really don't see the point. Why can't I put my system specifications in my signature if I want to?

Hi Ignat,I quite agree with you, with one exception: some basic system specs in signature are very helpful when it comes to troubleshot some problem. Otherwise you will need to post them over and over again whenever you encounter some issues. But I agree, some sigs are way to thorough.Regards,

I think in a lot of cases there is some major geeky my machines bigger then yours, I've seem some absolutely huge sigs in the past some people listing all 3 machines on there network  Anyway on the flip side it can be handy to see what some people are running, Tabs for example, I based my FSX rig on his sig. OP – Keep in mind this is not a pure aviation forum, we are using PC software just like any other gamer.

Because you are posting the same detailed information, which is only of interest to you, over and over again. Apart from wasting bandwidth, a large signature block makes reading the actual post, which might just be one line, very awkward. Surely people post to have their opinions heard. If your opinion is lost above large signature no one will bother looking for it to read it.I agree with the OP. Excessive signatures are just a way to say "look everybody, see how great my rig is." Size isn't everything. Kevin Hall

I can see the importance, eg. What if someone comes around with technical questions, the information is readily available, without you wasting another post on your specs alone.

It very much helps when asking for help with a problem. And we also put our full names in the signiture so we are in compliance with the forum's rules, unlike yourself.

This is not a real world aviation forum, why post hours and type ratings? This forum is for simmers, simmers use PCs. Why not state specs?Ben Thomson160 hours PPL (keeping with the OPs requests) :(

Well, somebody pays for the bandwidth, so why further strain this persons financial burden of running avsim by posting your system specs in the sig. If you have a technical request then by all means go ahead and post it in the relevant post / thread, but please, dont post it in every single post you make.

I agree long signatures decrease readability... but really, a bandwidth issue ? Plain text is hardly (if at all) a problem for bandwidth.

I guess the best thing would be if everybody just lists his most important system specs (cpu,gpu,ram...). Many of those guys here have all their addons listed in their signature and i bet nobody´s ever reading this :( But in the end it´s everone´s own choice what to write in his signature or not :(

I like reading forum sig"s, they lead me to interesting Virtual Airlines, helped me build a rig, influenced me in purchasing products, assisted me in getting help and helping others trouble shoot performance problems. If you do not like them then just go into your settings and turn off forum signatures, then you don't ever have to see one againbiggrin.gif

Precisely. Plus it adds character to an otherwise nameless, faceless forum. Though It should be done within reason. There are some signatures on here that make me roll my eyes.My personal rule is name, real world ratings, a tiny picture, and my system specs. Whadaya know? that's what I have now.I think it's even funnier the OP would post this in the PMDG General forum. Just a little ironic.

When you get to the point when letters and pixels start to bother you it's best to go walk to dog or spend some quality time with the family.

I agreeShowing how much money parents granted the last Friday is not strictly related to aviation stuff.Told that that's not a important matter as the thread's starter states, that's more a time killer one dry.gifMark Fosseth
