What zoom level in the VC?

Featured Replies

I use Track IR so I can move my view point at will. What does the NumPad 2 key do? Excuse my ignorance.
That saves your view settings. You can hit num2 and while you get the pinging, adjust your view to how you like it and then hit it again to save your view setting and the pinging stops. I prefer to do my view adjustments by enabling all the buttons (Zoom etc.) and then moving to where i want, after which i hit the num2 key twice and then disable the buttons i enabled. I just find everything moves around too much when doing it while num2 is active.

In reality there are two approches to this issue. 1. A zoom level that will give you a realistic amount of peripheral vision (impossible to achieve with one montor really), or at least that will help you see the instuments that need to be seen at all times without too much head movement. A zoom factor for that is fixed and will only really depend on the aspect ratio of your monitor. 2. A zoom level that will result in a realistic 1:1 size of the instruments. That zoom level will be unique for each monitor size and the distance between the monitor and the viewer. Usually, this zoom level is very unconfortable, since the restricted peripheral vision will require a lot of input either from a camera movement software, or head movement with trackIR (lucky you if you are using multiple projectors). The good thing about this zoom level, is that it really gives the feel of the cockpit not being a "toy", and that you really are there, just happened to be wearing horse blinkers. The concept is explained here. unled1gpx.jpg

I go for the second one, great diagram by the way. This way does indeed need some head movement but that's no problem for me as I'm always scanning in games like DCS A10 and Rise of Flight. Actually it's a lot less physical in the NGX. Also the runway doesn't look like a sidewalk on approach.Dan

That zoom level might get way above 1x in case your monitor is small and far from your head.

Anyone with 22" screens who are still using false?

22 inch monitor about a foot from my face, zoom to 0.80. Not exactly 1:1 but close enough to feel the immersion, especially when I lean in on the CDU or lean over my left shoulder to see the wing, lean back and arch my neck for the iRS switches.Dan.

I also use about 0.5 or 0.6. Although when I use more zoom the fd's are more sharp / less jitter in them... anybody else has this also? Maikel Rozemeijer.

Not sure how you guys can view it so wide angle out there at .4 - I use .7-.8 with track ir.

Yeah that's normal... not sure of the technical reason... it's the way the vector graphics work in most games.

Finally I understand, thank you for this explanation. 'Reducing zoom factor remains mandatory for those who haven't any Track IR. What it's loosen in immertion, is gained in playability.

Personal preferance really !! 0.5 gives a very realistic view.Very similar to the real thing.
Not at all! I flew MSFS for a long time using the VC, and then I flew in real airplanes and the feel was totally different. FS zoom level of 1.0 is the only one that gives me the same effect looking out the front as in real planes. But then of course you can't see your instruments. You really need a 2D cockpit zoomed at 1.0, or multiple monitors to get the real-world visual effect.

Am I the only one to use 1.0? When I enter the cockpit I move the view point back to the headrest and zoom in at 1.0 sometimes 0.9 but not less.It feels realistic to me like that^^ Pierre Laine
Mine is 0.98 final with WideViewAspect set to 'true'. All my VC cameras are set to 0.98, and I move closer or further away until I get the view I want. could you show me what your view looks like? here are mine

So, I have a 42" lcd tv which I run fsx on. With the resolution being 1920x1080, should I use WideViewAspect set to 'true' command?

As said beforeby Dan, I think too it depends on screen size you have, may be resolution too, because in order to have this view (like the one shown in the intro manual), I have to zoom out at least at 40%. If I want to keep the 60-70% recommended zoom, or just using the default view implemented by PMDG pressing BACKSPACE an CTRL+SPACE, I have to seat back and low, but it is too back as my head point of view is located in the seat back.
Change your WideViewAspect=False to "True"

Pierre how exactly do you move the view point back to the headrest? I find the number of views in FSX confusing but then I'm getting old!happy.png Iain Smith

Yes. Change it from 'False' to 'True'.
