GCXO-EFHK: long flight/great experience

Featured Replies

I was checking out the activity on IVAO the other night and noticed a 737-800 flight from Tenerife-South to Tampere, Finland. I thought it would be fun to try something like it, so last night I did my longest flight to date in the -800 SAS Freda King from Tenerife North (GCXO) to Helsinki (EFHK): 2683 nm, 06h01m. I used AS2012 for weather and REX-OD for textures. Brought along 36500 lbs of fuel, and had a spectacular sunrise t/o from rwy 30 on the KORAL1J departure with flaps 10 and V2=150. The big turn on climbout gives an awesome view of Tenerife off the right side of the a/c.Initial optimum cruise was at FL370, with steps to FL380 (flying northeast entering Spain) and then up to FL390 at the France/Belgium border. The FMC seemed to calculate step points and fuel savings perfectly. Had mild crosswinds for the first half of the flight, and a 40-50kt tail for the remainder. Did the PEXEN2R STAR to ILS rwy 04R with a 10kt crosswind, heavy snow and a 1500' ceiling for the late afternoon arrival into Helsinki. The alternate was EFTU (Turku), and fuel remaining was 5800 lbs. The a/c performed flawlessly, and the combination of AS2012/REX-OD kept the visuals interesting as the flight passed through several weather systems. Two "in-flight" movies ("Restless" and "La Femme Nikita") and a few cups of strong coffee helped keep me awake. For anyone interested the route was:KORAL UG5 SONSO UN871 VJF UN10 HIJ UW130 TLD UN858 VADOM UN874 VEKIN UN873 HELEN UZ702 MEDEL Z702 ALAMI UP606 PEXENIf you haven't done a long flight in the NGX I highly recommend you give it a try. It's an amazingly satisfying experience.BTW, the FISD Helsinki-Vantaa v1.61 scenery is truly beautiful in combination with Finnish Photosceneries I, FinlandX and FinnTerrain. These are all freeware and available here:http://files.fsnordi...cenery/Finland/Except for FinlandX the packages are for FS9 but they work just fine in FSX.

I can do long flights alright, at 4X the speed.Kudos for making it through a long flight like that, I couldnt do it.

Today i flew from New York (JFK) to Shannon (Ireland) in 6 hours with the NGX. And yes, i had 50-100 knots tailwind ;-)

Yeah, my next long flight is gonna be transatlantic, but not on a day without a healthy boot in the rear from the jetstream. :)

My longest was Hong Kong to Frankfurt in the MD-11...a hair over 12 hours. Longest in the NGX was CYOW - MUCU (Santiago Cuba) clocking in at 4.1 hours.

My longest flight in te NGX was around 3:30 hours in Europe. My longest flight in the real 737-800 with a cockpit crew on the jumpseat (and sometimes on the F/O seat during CRZ blum.gif) was around ~3 hours.I'm looking forward to fly this thing in uniform in a few years hopefully.

Three greens!

OK, since this turned into a "my longest flight" thread, my longest was from Charlotte-Douglas (CLT) to Atlanta-Hartsfield (ATL). :( Embarrassing, I know.I just don't know what to do for 4 hours. I don't know how people make it through the Cross the Pond events... I mean, they use time compression alright, but that's cheating!

Boston to Gatwick.. With the tailwind I clocked about 6 hours +something and landed with about 1000 pounds. Bloody long way to go on a 737..

Nothing embarrasing about that we all enjoy flightsim in our own way :). Two to three hours is the usual maximum for me. Since my VA charges a jumpseat fee (and I like having all my flights connected) I'll ocassionally do a longer flight to get across an ocean, but that's it. As for keeping busy during cruise, I have a second monitor, so I do some web surfing, chat to my VA friends via our flight logging program or just pull out a good book. When I did Marshall Islands - Honolulu - Seattle (4:30 and just under 6:00 respectively) in the Posky 737 (didn't have NGX at the time) War and Peace was my loyal companion :).

Shame! What better time than a long flight to begin memorizing bits of the FCOMs? :LMAO:Thanks for your flight reports, guys. I did LAX-FRA last summer in the MD-11, and as I recall it was around 11.5 hours. One of the reasons I wanted to do a long flight in the NGX was to see if my new rig, FSX installation and the NGX were up to the task of running for that length of time. I've read occasional posts complaining that FSX would crap out after a couple of hours. I was pleased that my 6 hour NGX flight had a successful ending.

EDDL- KBOS in FS9 was my longest one. Something arround 8 h with an A340-600. But recently I´m only flying the NGX in Souhtwest colors arround the West Coast. Next will be SJC - PDX (550NM and ~90 min.). I don´t really like the long ones.

Best regards, Steffen

Fight time: NGX 737-700: 37,0h; -800: 47,2h

Hi,My longest FS flight was Sydney to London Heathrow in the old PSS 777-200LR. I can't remmember the time as it's been years now, but I slept and went to school and it was still flying! My longest NGX has been Anchorage to Tokyo. 8 hours block time with an average of 40kts headwind. I've also done New York to Copenhagen a few times. That's a little over 7 hours.Have fun!

Martin Dahlerup

My rig contains a random selection of computer parts working in perfect harmony....

I hold a EASA fATPL + A320 SIC rating and a FAA CPL with CFI rating.
