A Rare Flight forum positive post

When the grand kid (6) comes over he wants to play the "flying game" (FSX)

I think flying with a mouse or keyboard is stupid and those dumb aerochaches or flight rings you have to fly through are for a 5 year old...
I think he might get more out of Flight, what do you reckon.
Looking forward to MS Flight too.You know, it's quite simple. If I had to choose between MS doing nothing with flight simming anymore or MS creating MS Flight, what would I choose...? Right.Obviously it would have been even nicer if MS Flight offered everything that people ever wanted in a sim, but I rather have FSX plus MS Flight then FSX plus nothing.
Well said! Although I'll change MY statement to "but I would rather have FS9 plus MS Flight than FS9 plus nothing"MSFlight is a step - maybe a misstep, maybe a step in the right direction - but at least it's a step! Looking forward to the 29th.

I think there are two important things to note here. Firstly, being able to fly (and fly well) with a mouse is quite critical to this game. A major selling point is to get people into flying games who would never have considered playing these games before. These people will not possess the specialised hardware required to fly were mouse flying not available. Apart from that, reports are that the mouse flying functionality actually works extremely well, which is more than I can say for it's re-introduction in FSX.Secondly, don't assume that 5 year olds are they only ones to whom the aerocache, hoop and ring challenges will appeal. I am certainly going to make good use of these myself, as it will be an immersive and fun way to maintain my stick and rudder proficiency / smoothness in flight games. Also, one might argue that there are many equally "juvenile" games out there that have broad appeal amongst adults. I know people in their 50s to 70s who love nothing more than to play "senseless" games such as Fruit Ninja, etc.

Only a small percentage of the newcomers to flight simming will have joysticks. If Avsim offers them for sale, they stand to make a bit of money. While you and I already have good flight controls, the new guys won't. Avsim would sell a few more if the newcomers were made to feel welcome and didn't leave after replies to their first post.Maybe offer Microsoft point cards for sale as well, if it's possible. Hm.I was surprised when a few beta testers said they preferred flying with the mouse. As for the keyboard, I used it exclusively in Orbiter and never missed a joystick. When I finally upgraded my joytstick from the game port version to USB, I tried it in Orbiter and it didn't work as well as the keyboard.I didn't get a lot out of the hoops and coins, but realized at some point they were forcing me to do some precision flying. They were fun. Give newcomers something interesting to do. Most people here probably flew through the hanger in the Apple 2 version; and this is the same kind of thing.Hook

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Well said by many,I too am really looking forward to the release of FLIGHT. I intend to help make it succeed by being supportive and positive and incorporating it into my flight simming choices. Better to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.Kind regards,

The mouse works well, but only for the simplest of maneuvers. To complete even medium difficulty maneuverability challenges, a properly configured controller will be required. To complete the toughest challenges, rudder use will be a must - via keyboard, pedals or a joystick with a twist axis.Just for the record, you can spend hours trying for the best score in the challenges and many of them are quite fun. It is the rest of the game that is lacking in entertainment.
Long term flight simmer here. I absolutely loved the Beta and can't wait for 29th Feb.
I'm on the same boat. :smile:Flight has enormous potential....

You know I've been flying around in the beta these last few days before I loose it.
Very good post. :smile:Just a couple of things: You only loose the beta version if you delete it . . . which I'm not doing in until the 29th.
LOOK I think it's stupid they way they are launching it and the way they are selling the little super expensive pieces and how they have turned this into a game from a sim... I think flying with a mouse or keyboard is stupid and those dumb aerochaches or flight rings you have to fly through are for a 5 year old...
I see the aerocaches as a way to keep Flight interesting. I thought they were too "gamey" at first, but having an "aerocache of the day" is a pretty smart move. And most of the Aerocaches are used to point out points of interest, such as historical landmarks . . . which is far from dumb.
But it appears the core system here is pretty awesome. The performance is 30+ at maximum for me and my system if 5 years old..The level of detail in the trees, roads, water, airplane, buildings and airports is pretty dang amazing for a core product. I really have enjoyed flying in FlightAlso the missions I have flown are leaps and bounds of what I have flown in FSX. The experience of a the missions are very real life feeling. Will anyone get rid of FSX for many years to come.. NO.. me neither.. but as a secondary experience I think I'm gonna enjoy it and probably purchase some stuff I am interested in. I mean if you compare the x-plane 10 demo and the Flight Beta Flight wins with a knock out.
Totally agree. Most of Flight's missions are very well done, and add another level to the realism (and gives players more to do).I'm also keeping FSX (and X-Plane 9).

I actually love the aero-caches. They aren't 'gamey' to me in the least. I enjoy collecting them and flying in new places around the island.Flight's missions/tutorials to me are like having a real CFI in the plane with you. Especially on one particular mission. It gave me goosebumps from the realism factor of having a virtual instructor in the plane with you.

the 29 it is ....

My thoughts exactly. Although I haven't tried it yet, I suspect I'll enjoy it (being as I enjoy virtually every flying game I've ever played), and as long as my suspicions are correct, I plan on at least buying the rest of the islands. From then, it's a wait-and-see as to what sort of DLC they come out with. Looking forward to the 29th!
I am with you guys, 2.29.12 can't get here soon enough. I have not seen squat. Can't believe I didn't get into the beta.
Do not be disappointed You will be able to see everything we so called "beta testers" saw in 13 days. You didn't miss anything. If I get anything for "free" I would gladly give it to you as I won't need it.
