An educators view...

How about a student's forum? We could have mods who are educators (did I see you raise your hand?... ) who might want to contribute to the learning experience. Maybe even a teacher's forum (by invitation) where syllabus could be created, discussed etc. We have wanted to do this type of thing for some time, and have in fact attempted it in the past. We didn't get much traction. Maybe FLIGHT is the door opener that has been needed to make this happen... Any ideas from any community members would be appreciated.
Let's do it. It would be certainly worth trying again (and again and again), and giving it the best shot we can. Educating the next generation is the last thing in the world we should ever dare stop trying to do...Kind regards,

Sounds good to me... How about we start a totally new category of forums entitled; The Student's Hangar?

How about a student's forum?
I like that idea very much. The students I first started this program with are now 8th graders. The ones that really enjoyed flying are still in touch with me. I currently have 6th graders. If we get something going while these students are still under me, it might be easier to get it populated. I will be in touch Tom and see if we can hash something out. I have spring break next week so that would be a good time to wrap my head around it.
You might look at the book "How Planes Fly" by David Anderson and Scott Eberhardt (Fermi labs).
Thanks for the tips Chris. It is good to have other resources at my fingertips. I am treading in waters that none of my colleagues have attempted so I know I will continue to tweak and change things. I used Bernoulli's with my students when they created a simple airfoil that we tested with a high speed fan, to allow them to see lift firsthand. I wanted them to understand the concepts before I even introduced the simulator aspect of things.Man...I should have come knocking around here two years ago when I was hard at work planning the lessons! Now I know......Thanks again for the suggestions and resources!-Danon

Let me know what I can do to help. I can certainly start pointing my students in this direction if there is a specific place they can seek help. They are 11-14 years old ranging from 6th to 8th grade.

We can do that. We should have the rudiments of a system up and running by day's end. Thanks Danon for the assist.

Yes! Question: We want to support those trying to learn Flight, FS9, FSX and X-Plane too I should think. Should they each have a student dormitory, or one where they can choose their classes from one place, so to speak?

That's the ticket to ride!

Probably one of the nicest threads I have read in a loooong time. My hat off to you, Danon.

That is so awesome guys, and a prime example of the benefits of a program such as Flight.

Wow! Thanks Tom,I have been sending my students this way for assistance and help. Contrary to the view most have of middle school students, mine are quite knowledgable and mature. Just having a welcoming forum where they can see that they are not alone in their passion for flight, would be great. I had another student today come to me and say how much fun she had flying around Honolulu yesterday evening. I love the fact that both my male students and female students have taken hold of it. When I taught my flight school lessons last year, my female students were actually better than most of my guys. They had a more delicate touch and didn't try to over control the plane.I will surely ask for some assistance or ideas next year when I do this flight unit again. I have the same students for 2 years and only do my flight unit in 5th grade. It will be around April of 2013 when I am at it again with my new students.I appreciate the responses I have gotten, and the words of encouragement. They are much appreciated.-Danon
Danon, I really enjoyed your opening post.It is great to see that Flight is so popular with the younger crowd.I have a very kid friendly gaming website(I try to explain things in ways that kids, and even their grandparents can understand), which now includes a Flight section (which is still growing). I plan on adding some tutorials in the near future. The link is in my sig.

Yeah, we're probably going to have to expand our *#(&*#$ replacement filters considerably. Anyone have lexicon of current vocabulary that we should prepare for??? Shame%20On%20You.gif

my 10 and 12 year old boys say "sick" to mean great or cool.... get used to that! Come to think of it, one of my fellow pilots at the charter company I work for said that recently... and he's 29! haha
