XP-10 after a month of solid use...

Featured Replies

is SO GOOD .... ever since upgrading my video card drivers, it has opened up a new world to me. I am over the initial hump and full fledged into XP10. I have not used FSX since then! I am not giving up on FSX, not at all, and look forward to trying it again soon - however, with my recent purchases for XP10, being the 787, CL300 and now the amazing CRJ at 50% off the price this week - all I can say is I am so stunned at the realism, fidelity and wow factor - so much like real life, I dunno when I'll be flying FSX. See, to me, it's the smoothness, combined with so much scenery, detailed cockpits and now, good airplanes that I am smitten. I have had not one lockup, crash or hang with XP. I can fly for 12 hours on some large trip, and it's still working when I wake up! FSX was always a worry!

I am wanting to do a big review, but can't stop flying long enough to do it!

Peter,

I think a lot of us would like to see a review of XP10 from you. Your expertise not only as a pilot but also as a flight sim designer would certainly carry a lot of weight. Step away from the yoke and do it. Please?

Peter, Great to know!!!!

Above all I would really like to know what contributed for such a course reversal regarding your oppinion on the way xplane felt... Was it the new hardware? Is it the fact that good add-on aircraft allways make a difference no matter if you're using MSFS or XPlane?

I'm curious, mostly because I would really like to fall in love for xplane10...

I few months ago, I was in the same position as Peter. I tryed the demo, didnt care for it and went back to FSX. Then I kept having this nagging feeling I wasnt giving XP a chance. I bought the full version and then went and bought the CRj (which at that time was almost $60.) I figured this was going to be the bigest waste of money or something great will come of it. Im glad I did, because the CRJ showed me what XP10 was capable of and then I bought more great addons (Carenado Bonanza, LES DC-3 and Challeger 300 to name a few) and Im totally hooked. I went from an XP hater to an XP lover in just a few weeks time. I cant tell you when I last fired up FSX. Its not perfect, but all my complaints about XP are on their way to being addressed.

Rob,

I've been following your posts, those by Peter James as well as many others here at AVSIM's Xplane forum. I have recently "upgraded" to a new i5 2500 8GB RAM and Nvidia GTX450. Not the perfect rig, but it will certainly do.... I believe/hope

After my frustration with FLIGHT, not really because of it's characteristics as a game, but rather because of it's limitations FM/Weather/etc-wise, I have decided I had to make yet another serious evaluation of xp10.

I will install the next beta demo, and give it a fair try! A CARENADO add-on will help ...

Thx for your oppinion!

jcomm,

I think its great that you are keeping an open mind about different sims, Ive jumped around a bit in the last year, FSX to P3d to Flight then back to FSX and then to XP10. My finding is, there is no perfect sim that does everything Id like, but all have some good and bad things. XP10 has a great start, but still needs work in a few areas, but in time it will be fantastic.

I can say that, a good quality payware aircraft, and spending some time to set up your joystick and other hardware in XP10 and then get the right rendering settings for you system, will be a great start to enjoying XP10.

Set everything to lowest settings, There is a button to do this in the rendering settings screen. Then gradually work up from there. Its time consuming, but will give you the best results.

Wish you luck,

Rob

I'm recently loving XPX's GA feel also to the point of I haven't fired up FSX in a while. My only complaints are the normals, AI, ATC. Been using pilotedge lately so my ATC grief is minimal. Only wish I could find a good Airport tutorial as I would like to populate my home airport.

We need more posts like this in every forum, not because it's laudatory, but because it's by someone who pushed through the growing pains of setting up ANY sim, and gave it a fair shake, and thus a legitimate evaluation. Especially by someone as knowledgeable about RW and sim flying as Peter James.

Glad to see your enjoying your sim Peter, I read a lot of your posts over the last few weeks and months and they were all over the map, but you persevered, and crafted the experience you wanted.

Only wish I could find a good Airport tutorial as I would like to populate my home airport.

I am definitely planning on doing one as soon as I can. We are going to do a series of magazine articles I hope...in 3 installments, going over various phases of airport development...BUT, if I can find some time before that (because the lead time is a long time)....I hope to do a tutorial video so folks can get started. One thing is for sure, is that it is not lost on us that tools and training are mandatory and we are aggressively looking to address that between now and the end of the year. The goal is for folks with no experience in scenery development to download WED....fire it up, have a scenery tutorial at their side and populate their airport and be flying in it in no time flat.

This post gives me great hope that reason and goodwill can always prevail in favour of people and products that deserve it. To me it says that X-Plane 10 is a solid way forward for those with the medium and long term flight simulation view in mind.

More exciting is that it sounds to me that it is already delivering on its promise in the here and now. When people like Peter James likes what he sees, it should make anyone turn around and reconsider any decisions they may have made to the contrary. It is with me.

Great thread!

I was so impressed with my CRJ200 experience in XP9 that I took the plunge and ordered XP10 today. I hope it will finally taked off and we will see more detailed aircraft like the CRJ. I really like the flying experience in XP. Landing the crj, the flare is so detailed...wow

99% of the peolpe who bash Xplane have not given it more then a 10min test flight. If People actually spent 4 or 5 hours I bet most would be hooked!

Tried my hand way back with XP8. Found it very heavy going for my abilities at that time. Alas, the program finished up gathering dust on a shelf somewhere.

Having listened to the Q & A with A.M. on FSBreak, last night. And, given my improved skill set over the years. I have decided to dive in with XP10. That is not to say I shall leave FSX or P3D. Scenery looking/watching is great fun but can hardly be classed as an achievement.

Seems that as I get older I prefer to delve into the complexities of things as apposed to the more trivial aspects.

A very enlightening broadcast by the way, also well managed. Thank you Stephen.

Arnie....if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

I was a cat on the wall for XPX for a long time coming. A post on a vatsim forum from a XP critic and the CRJ 50% offer made me install the demo. 10mts later my order for XPX global was put in.

I couldn't have said it better, but now as it comes from Peter, I am all the more happy. Just ordered the GTX560ti DS SC (why do they sound like latte's) which has $30 MIR for another week, hopefully I can get better FPS. Even with my current 465, I am soooo happy with my purchase. Like others, I will never abandon FSX, but XPX for 90% of my GA flying going fwd
