So who's made the switch from FSX?

Hi Pascal

Thanks for the tip - I have a problem with the zip files... I don't speak italian but it says something about having to rename the files before unpacking them. How do you do that? In Win 7 it seems impossible to change the extension... Sorry for being thickheaded :-)

if the name is XYZ.001.zip, rename it to XYZ.001 = remove the *.zip extension.

In former Windows there is an option to enable extension's display. That was accessible through folders customization options. I don't know how you do that in Win7.

Also, you must install 7zip: http://www.7-zip.org/

That's a great archive manager that enables the excellent 7z format.

I figured it out. Turns out it was one of those things I had forgotten that I knew :-)

Thanks - and now to another problem. Look hos Marino airport on Elba looks. This is surely not right :-) What do you think is the problem? Note that I updated things to X10 according to the website.

Hi Howard, I am getting X Plane as soon as i get the computer from the shop as they are building it, and waiting for some vid cards i bought from E Bay. I am not switching per say but going to enter it's world of helicopter flying. Apparently the flight models for certain helo's are great. Graphically, I must try it before commenting, as i am a staunch Orbx user. That being said, X Plane scenery can be easily modified (so i am told), and really like the night and free way's. I think I will really enjoy using it once i get over the interface and learn what is what. Getting into it with a positive attitude. Putting it on it's own SSD! Nice to see you here!

Hi matey, someone who is a staunch Orbx supporter! I will be very interested in hearing your thoughts once you have had time to evaluate XP...

To change the extensions in Win 7, go to Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> Folder options, then go to the "View" tab, and then uncheck "hide extensions for known file types". Now you'll see the .zip extension and can remove it.

After decompressing the files, put them inside the "Custom Scenery" folder of X-Plane.

To install X-ITALY in X-Plane 10 though, you _must_ also do these additional steps:

.download the appropriate scenery update for x-Plane 10 here: http://www.x-italy.it/v10.htm

For each updated archive:

.decompress the archive (no need to delete the extension in this case) in a new folder

.you'll find 3 sub-folders:

1) Earth Nav data

2) "da copiare in terrain" (optional)

3) ""da copiare in textures" (optional)

.go to X-Plane "Custom Scenery" folder and find the corresponding original scenery (example: the updated "pantelleria_37_11_V10" archive will update the original "z37_11_pantelleria-terrain" custom scenery).

.delete the "overlay" folder in the original scenery (example: "z37_11_pantelleria-overlay")

.replace the "Earth Nav Data" folder inside the original scenery with the folder of the same name you have found in the updated archive.

.if there is the folder "da copiare in terrain", add (copy) its content inside the "terrain" folder of the original scenery

.if there is the folder "da copiare in textures", add (copy) its content inside the "textures" folder of the original scenery

This photorealistic scenery can also be used in combination with OSM 3D buildings for all italian cities (downloadable here: http://www.x-plane.i...p?f=101&t=15638 ) and with OSM roads for the whole Italy (http://www.x-plane.i...php?f=27&t=7658).

WARNING: in order to use OSM buildings, you need to install OpensceneryX ( http://www.opensceneryx.com/ ).

Note that the scenery does not include airports buildings. They can be downloaded separately here: http://www.x-plane.i...wforum.php?f=64

Here's what you can expect:

(This is X-Plane 9 though)

Final note: Custon scenery will not work in the DEMO version of X-Plane 10!

you mean the runway? it's wrong in x-plane, not photoscenery. there even is a custom scenery package available for marina d i campo on the italian forums. but the version I have still has it wrong. I'll have another look, maybe they fixed the apt.dat since they have this great photoscenery.

EDIT: unfortunately, it is still the old version. But still better than nothing:

the market might be ripe, but XP10 is not. The defaults already push it to the limits of Vram usage and performance. With 10.2 and 64-bit a different game can be started.

However, there are a lot of great sceneries already avaiable. The ones by leblegle have already been mentioned. At the moment I am very happy with http://www.x-italy.it/ in combination with italian osm2xp buildings (http://www.x-plane.i...p?f=101&t=15638). I can't use it a lot because of the Vram limits, but short flights do work- Highly recommended. Maybe the best freeware photoscenery available at this time.

There's more. My custom scenery folders is 132 GB large and covers 4674 customs airports. Let it be 10% of that wich could be rated "very good" to "outstanding", I'd say that is a lot.

Am I seeing what I think I'm seeing but is there also 3d buildings in that screenshot? If so, that is gorgeous!

So let me get this straight, After I download the files for Italy, They all have .zip extensions which I need to remove. (I get this part) Im then left with a file I can not open with anything. Do I just copy this to the X-plane custom scenery directory? or does the extension have to be re-named to something else? It seems the zip files can not be opened as is.

Then download the revisions for X-plane 10 and copy parts of those into the original files? This 1st part is what has me confused because I can not open the downloaded files with or without the .Zip extension.

Im sorry, Im all confused here. Id love to try this scenery but im lost as to how to get it installed in XP10.

Can someone spell it out for a technically challenged guy?

Hi Rob!

Download and install 7-Zip ( http://www.7-zip.org/ ).

Open 7-Zip, browse to the folder where you have saved all the renamed files (they should have now the extension .7z.001, .7z.002, .7z.003, etc) and select (inside 7-Zip) all the files at once, from first to last. Then select "Extract" and it should extract all the files in a new folder. You then put this new folder (it should be called, for example, "Z42_12_Roma-terrain") inside the "Custom Scenery" folder of X-Plane. (At this point, you can delete the original .7z.001, .7z.002, etc.).

Then download the revision for X-plane 10 (they're simply zip files) and do the following:

.replace the original "Earth nav data" folder inside custom scenery (example: Z42_12_Roma-terrain/Earth nav data) with the "Earth Nav Data" you've found in the new revision file (example: Roma_V10/Earth nav data).

.copy the content of the "da copiare in terrain" folder (if present) in the "Terrain" folder of the original custom scenery (example: Z42_12_Roma-terrain/terrain)

.copy the content of the "da copiare in textures" folder (if present) in the "Textures" folder of the original custom scenery (example: Z42_12_Roma-terrain/textures)

.delete the "overlay" folder (example: Z42_12_Roma-terrain/Z42_12_Roma-overlay) in the original custom scenery.

Nice screenies Wycliffe. I don't want to be negative, but... I'm afraid, regardless that they are 3d in structure, the clouds just don't do it for me. I would only contemplate XP once either AS or REX is available. Many thanks for the screenies though, they are excellent...

AHA! See got you there, you can get REX for X plane. I havent looked at it yet myself but yes it's available.

http://www.realenvir...com/xplane.html

If you look on you tube there are a couple of films made by Austin Meyer of Xplane that really show it off to good effect, if you want to see the Uk photoscenery in action also on you tube Bob Sidwick of RC Simulations has put up a whole series of films do a search for "overtherainbow1213" and you will find them.

Wycliffe

REX is only for X-Plane 9 currently, won't work in X-Plane 10.

Compared to FSX, X-Plane clouds have plus and minuses. FSX do a much better work of depicting vertically developed clouds (e.g. CB), but X-Plane does a good job in representing stratified clouds (stratii, stratocumulii). Also, X-Plane clouds give a much better 3d feeling when flying through them.

You can try the demo to experiment with the cloud depiction.
